Hi Steve:
The rivet divot wheel permits even spacing for the "stove bolt" rivets and "carriage bolt" round heads that are on the DC-3. I know its a lot of step and repeat work but its definately worth it to see those hundreds, if not thousands of points of light shining back off that aluminum. Easy for me to write...huh?
Seriously, you can lay down RC560 and it dries crystal clear...permitting absolutely prestine light to be reflected back with a nice round apex in the center... Go test it and let me know what you think... You can easily mix some acrylic gun metal or pewter with it and BAM! Its "the look of the real thing"... all over again
Its what parts the winners from participants... Just like Eve and the apple....try it and you'll like it!

Anyone care to spend 40 dollars for a ride in this great old bird?
This was taken at Smith Field Airport in Fort Wayne Indiana last year when the airplane was here and selling rides for 40 dollars.
Nice airplane!

It may be at Auburn Indiana this year during the Auburn-Cord -Duesenberg Festival during Labor Day weekend.
Auburn airport identifier is 07C , 5000 foot runway east-west 090-270,soon to be 7000 feet with ILS.

Well things are progressing,I made the decision not to go with the Saitos for now because they need more testing and breaking in etc.I'm going to go with the gassers(US41's) for now because they are broken in and are very reliable.I can switch later once the Saitos have proven themselves.I'll stay with the larger cowls also.
I just about have my paint shop ready and the temps are warming up so in the meantime I added a few more rivit divits using 2 wheels for different spacing and a punch.I won't be putting them all down since there's about 500,000.I'll wait until after the flight testing till I add anymore and raise em up ...

Hi all, I am new to this thread. Am doing research for my brother who is attempting to finish his Ziroli DC-3 with G-38's and robarts. The project was started about 5 years ago and put up.
I would like to know what power systems you are using to power the servos and if anyone has used a powerbox or similar setup on a single receiver setup.
Also looking for resource photo and info on a paint sceme for the Puff the Magic Dragon DC-3 (or is it C-47) gunship.

Hi Richard;I'm going with a 6 volt system with a single receiver.I think using a powerbox is a good idea also.I recall that Air Classics did a story with lots of pics on a C-47 painted in Puff the Magic Dragon colours about a year ago.I have the issue somewhere...

Here's a few pics of the paintjob to date,I'm using automotive acyrlic enamel. The wings are done and now I'm adding some graphics provided by Kirbys Custom Graphics.Still have some work to do.

Not a radome. It's a high frequency radio direction finder antenna. Common on aircraft iin the 1935-1950 periaod before VHF comm gear became popular.

Thanks Reuben;Got the dome from a Dollar Store(where everything costs a buck) ,It was part of a egg shaped container for a kids toy.Theres alot of different RCAF schemes out there Rueben another fellow not far from here just did one in the Search and Rescue version.It also has US 41's and he just did the first test flight which was a success.

Here is the only pic I could find of my bro's DC-3. The plane is currently on the bench and being evaluated for what is needed to make it airworthy.
The plans called for a single servo per wing and so far that is how it has been put together. Are you guys using just one servo? If so what torque and also what torque for the elevators and rudder?
Looks like we are going to set it up to fly first, then come back for paint and windows, etc.

Well I just ordered the electronics package for her.
We have a Smart Fly Power Expander Futaba Style. BTW they stopped making these and will come out with a new line at Smart Fly...costs more.

On order are two Fromeco Badger switches. These will have 18g wire with Deans connectors in and out. Each switch can handle 15 amps of power and is a Fail Safe style so the power stays on when or if the switch fails.

Power will be two HR5-FAUP 3200 NIMH 6 volt batteries. Each battery is capable of providing 40 amps of power if needed.

Continuous 5 volt regulated and buffered power to the receiver
6 volt (unregulated) power to the servos
Fail Safe Switches
Unlimited power for perhaps 8-10 15 minute flights (educated guess at this point)

The plane is on the other side of the state at my brothers (it is his bird-I am doing the research)
Should have the power system installed in next two weeks then it is on to the ground testing phase of range checks, engine runups etc. At our pace it may be another 6 weeks before the maiden.
Does anyone on this thread(or otherwise) have a flight report?
Over the past few years we have seen a couple of them fly at the annual Top Gun event in Lakeland FL. Didn't have the presence of mind to ask questions then though.
Watched one flyer (on his competition flight) blow the takeoff about 3 times when the engines would not spool up together. The plane wound up doing a pancake into the pitts....not a total, actually little damage and thank God no people hit.

Mines in the balance and final check stages.I still have to tweak my outboard flaps but everything else is working fine.I'll use a sub C cell battery pack for the landing lights and store it in the nose section to give me a balanced airplane with the gear down.

What method are you using to check the wing tubes once the wings are on? Frank wants to drill them for a pin the size of 10g wire and insert the pin from the bottom of the wing to keep the wing tubes from loosening in flight. Got any pictures?
BTW your plane looks great. Got a weight on it? Any idea when it might fly? Will you have a video crew standing by?

Hi Richard;I'm just using a 4-40 bolt from the top surface.It goes through a threaded block into the wing tube.I have used steel rods that are installed through the leading edges then through the front and rear tubes via nyrod tubes installed during construction.I guess Frank could use a rod vertically as long as you could lock it in place.
Got a few more pics,these are in daylight.I'll be tapeing the first flight alright.I still have a bit of work to do including setting up my trailer for the DC3 so it'll be a while yet.I think I'm at around 47lbs.
