OV-10 Bronco 81"

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81"
The batteries are located in the fuselage, just aft of the nose gear opening. The power systems consist of 2x
Hacker A50-12L motors, Jeti 77 Opto Pro ESC's and Evo 20 6S 4900 mAh packs swinging APC 15 x 10 props.
Each side pulls 48A at max power for 1150 watts per side. No lack of power!! May try some 15 x 12's.

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81"
Thanks Rich. That answers my question. I bought my kit not long after the article came out on 2001. Wow! I didn't realize it had been that long since I started my kit but it finally got it done and the plane flies great even at 22 lbs. I glassed and painted the fuse and nacelles on mine which probably accounts for the extra weight.

Since I've invested in the Sierra gear for this plane I'll have to get another one if this one should come to an untimely end. Time does seem to fly and I would take another shot at the Bronco anytime. Wouldn't take me years to build again though and perhaps I could shave off a few pounds in the process.

What drove it to weigh 20 lbs? battery weight or?

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81"
Batteries are in the fuselage for both CG and accessibility for charging. Cooling is also simplified. With the canopy section off, the area is wide open for batteries, nose gear, ESC's, retract filler valve and switch. Batteries, combined with motors and Sierra retracts, explain the weight delta.

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81"
Got a scale tech bronco now and the difference in construction compared to my kit built bronco is significant. The kit built has plywood sides with ply doublers and the ARF has balso sides with ply doublers. The kit built has some formenrs made with 1/4 x 3/4 basswood sticks and the ARF has all 1/8" formers. The ARF is much lighter built by a long shot. Unfortunately I crashed my kit built but the damage wasn't that bad since it sort of pancaked in. Broke the wing in half, tore off the wing mount from the fuse and the tail fins snapped in half. Had the ARF crashed in the same manner I am sure the fuse, nacelle's would have been heavily damaged, moreso than the kit built one with the fibergrass covering. I'm thinking now that I might strip off the covering of the ARF and fiberglass the fuse and nacelles. Since the ARF is built so light the extra weight of the fiberglass will still put it much under the 22 lb weight of the kit built bronco and add considerable durability. I've got two to play with now so we'll see.

Wowser ![X(] Those Sierra retracts were a little pricey but...... what the heck ! [ yup, I bought the $500+ ones ] And this little venture only cost me a new silver and diamond ring for the wife ! [ serious too! ] Well, you guys did'nt think I was going to get this plane for free, did you ?. So goody for me, I've now got a great summer project. Saito .100's with 14-8 three blades will do the job at 4500 feet. "Adios Amigos" ! MM [ on FlyinAmos computor ]

Any idea where I can find adhesive-backed stickers in NASA markings for my OV-10. Pinstrips are easy enough to do with ultracote but who would have the NASA markings for sale. Thanks, MM [ on FlyinAmos computor ]

RE: OV-10 Bronco 81"
On another note. I have found on my Bronco that about 6% mix of elevator to flap works great for take off and landing. I was flying with no mix and taking off with about 30 degrees of flap. The resulting take off would climb would get real steep, real fast. Mixing in 6% down elevator with flaps changed all that. Now the plane leaves the ground smoothly and predictably. The same is true of landing. With the mix I can deploy flaps to whatever degree and the plane settles like a feather. I can hardly believe how soft this 22.5 lb model settles down. Is anyone else still enjoying their Bronco?

I am working on a 81" Ov-10 Bronco myself. Found your comment and wanted to know if you have figured out the best 3 bladed prop to use?
I am using a pair of Saito 91s off a grass runway.

What size tires did you use? After reading all the information in this thread, I wonder why hobbyhanger is still recommending the spring air retracts? I recieved an response to my
question via email from Hobby Hanger.

I've got a pair of Saito 82's and was using 12X8 Master Airscrew props but found that 13X8 APC's perform better for me on this airplane. I was getting 9100 rpm with the three blade and get about 10200 with the 13X8. No problem taking of on grass with either just better performance in the air.

I had twin Saito 91's and used APC 14-6 props...not my first choice from an appearance standpoint, but it sure flew well of grass and pavement

I'm in Edmonton for a few days doing some expediting at local shops. What's the best hobby shop here?
