GP Easy Sport 40 Bashing
Has anyone ever bashed a sport plane and installed a pair of engines facing aft? I am thinking about bashing a GP EasySport 40 and installing a pair of OS 52 4-strokes. I want to install them as pushers.
I'm simply looking for a new challenge. Any thoughts?

RE: Bashing question
That would certainly be different!!! A couple of obvious things to watch for is that the props don't hit the ground when rotating on take off, and secondly with the weight of the engines now behind the cg, something has to be added up front to counter balance them...like a longer nose, big heavy battery, lead weight.....

RE: Bashing question
After some thinking (no laughing), I have decided I will do this. This should make for an interesting side project as I assemble my 1/12" scale AC-130.
Personally I hate having perfectly good engines laying around.... these need to be put to good use.
Tonight I got the majority of the fuselage assembled. I plan to go with a tricycle landing gear setup. I moved the main(aft) gear blocks back approx 1" to give me stability for ground ops.
I plan to mount my 2400 6v battery up front where the original engine was called for. This should be a good start to balancing this project. I will also shift all possible electronics closer to the nose.
I plan to keep everything close to "stock" as called for by the kit.
Mike
Maybe I can add the OS .50 I have laying around in the nose?!!?!?!?!? nah, better not.

I got my firewalls installed. Now I need to determine what size and shape fuel tanks to install. Is there a square, top loading fuel tank out there? I plan on having 6-8oz tanks.
I will be reducing the overall height of the firewalls to allow the airflow to cool the engine heads in flight.

Well, this isn't going to win any beauty competitions, but I bet it flies like rocket!!
I got the tail fins installed. I installed some "side-force-generators", just to see how it flies.[8D] It should fly & knife-edge like its on rails. I am modifying the nose to move the cockpit canopy to the front, rather than over the wing.
I cannot do much with the engine nacelles until I get my fuel tanks. So far the balancing is working out to be real close.
The last picture shows what it "should" look like.

I finally got all the bugs worked out and I'm ready for a test flight. Tomorrow with some favorable weather, I should see how my project handles.

Interesting project to say the least. Look forward to the flight report. I cant believe you carried the project through to completion in 2 weeks. You build a lot faster than I do.

RE: GP Easy Sport 40 Bashing
Gringo,
Its just a simple kit. It took the longest to get the engines mounted.
WELL, It flew like a raped ape!! Plenty of power and it raced down the runway. It took off beautifully. The controls took some getting used to. It was very sensative. I kept to simple patterns until I got everything trimmed out. I landed short of the runway but landed softly in the side grass. It lives to fly again tomorrow!!
I definately had too much up thrust in the engines. I need to add some washers behind the upper engine mounts to put some down-thrust into it. I also need to tune the engines alittle better. Although my video shows them singing, they were singing today. It could be from the 39 degree temperature at the field.
TOmorrow is another day. I hope to get her airboirne tomorrow!

Video to follow soon.

RE: GP Easy Sport 40 Bashing
Sorry, no videos exist.
I lost this plane to a radio "hit" on the second day of flying. The second flight was perfect. This plane was rock solid at 1/3 throttle. The engines were perfectly in-sync. After about a dozen patterns, I was making a left turn for final and the plane started to roll right. I added more left aileron and rudder, NOTHING. The right turn continued until it was in a spiraling dive. The sound was distinct, both engines were still running in sync. I yelled "MAY-DAY" as it spiraled to the ground, but my pilot didn't eject.
I had some radio interference. The plane hit the ground and buried the nose up to the nose wheel. The wing sheared off cleanly at the fuselage. Everything was salvageable. I only stripped out 2 servos. The plane was beyond repair, so I scrapped it.
It was definately a fun project. I may do it again once I move to a 2.4ghz setup.

RE: GP Easy Sport 40 Bashing
After alittle prodding, I finally received the maiden flight video. THis this was a handful. I needed more down-thrust . I was just glad to get in back on the ground in one piece. Enjoy!

I am interested in doing something similar, but with tractor engines under the wings. Anyone have any tips on what firewall angles should be?

RE: GP Easy Sport 40 Bashing
The same downthrust as the original. The same right thrust as the orignal on the right engine and straight ahead on the left engine. Those angles will make it fly like the original with both engines running and will help avoid snaps if you lose either engine.
