Rick, of the 5 beasts that I have built over the years, none have hit the scales under 30lbs. With the glass 310 fuse from G&L I feel that 25lbs is a dooable proposition. Im not doing an interior on this one. It is going to be built for fun-flying. All I want out of this is the oooooh factor at the field. I ended up getting a pile of G23's from a dist. when the g26's came out. One of the best gas motors that I have ever come across. Thanks for the idea on the chin of the cowl bowl. Back in the 80's Stan and I came up with that cowl design from pictures and measurements off my full size 310. When Stan sold the business a while ago I guess the new guy took the plugsI hope! I have seen Gregs cowl bowls from G&L but they seem to have material below the spinner ring simular to your mod.

Too Low, if you could bring it in under 28lb., then G-23's would fly it great. I'm not sure which prop will be best for that motor,,,but I sure do favor the APC,,,maybe a 16-8...thats what I would try 1st and see what it turns. If you research the cowls on the 310 over the years, there were probably atleast 8 different cowl bowl shapes during the production run. I think the "R" model cowling was the best looking one, along with the rest of the plane. I commend G&L for comming up with that glass fuse ! I know it was alot of work. If it was a true scale "R" model fuse, I would definatly own one. The only other R model I ever heard of was one from a German company called Kullman. That kit had a scale R model one piece glass fuse and vertical fin, 120" foam wings and stab. Just BEUTIFUL !!.....Discontinued last I heard....about $3500.00 USD.....Too bad Top Flite dose not offer a scale 310 R version......Maybe somebody needs to come up with a "R" conversion kit that replaces the shorter nose.....Where did I hear that Mac Hodges is coming out with a Cessna 310 ARF this Spring? I have only seen one guy building the Wendell Hostetler Cessna 310R, here on RCuni. Never even heard of anyone else seeing one....Anybody know of one, anywhere? Rick

You are Right on the beam with my thoughts I was looking on airlines.com yesterday for the very reasons you mentioned, changing the shape of the nose is no problem! Let me see what you have and maybe I can come up with the changes you want for all to use.
but I have to tell you I am snowed with all manner of honeydo's and build projects so things may move slowly but I really want to try.
look for a pm....If we work together I think anything is possible. scratch building is something I prefer but three views for the "R" I do not have.

the Hostetler drawings appear to be stellar he does excellent work I have considered buying a set or drawing my own, just to busy to begin another project right now.

Last time I talked to Mac Hodges, he was about ready with a 310 ARF. I understand that he has flown the prototye and has a supplier in China. Around 90" and comes with retracts.

I believe the price will be around $1500....Bo

Hey, Bill, received my Nosen Cessna 310 plans/patterns! WOW..this plane is huge. Mentioned to my wife that I'd better be looking into getting a trailer to haul this thing around in [8D]....and she said I'd be better off putting my money into building a doghouse. What's that got to do with it?

BTW: How many of you folks think two new OS 75 AX engines would fly this plane prototypically?

Soft landings.

Hey Squeakalong, welcome to the club, my dog house is 15' x 24' and it has air conditioning,
it's called my shop and the wife has a sign on the door that says "Bill's Doghouse".

For the money that you will spend on the OS 75's why not go gas with the RCS SV-26 cc motors,
they are only $175 each versus the Tower price on the Os's of $190 each. Then you will not only
save a few buck on the motors and have enouigh power for this beautiful beast you will also save on fuel cost,
gas over glow fuel. See the link below, these are very good engines........

No I sure didn't, did you send it to me in an e-mail? I haven't been to
my blue printer as of yet, been busy at work and they aren't open on
Saturdays, guess I can get my parts runner to take it in and drop it off
for me and I can tell them what I need done. I'll give you a call later this
evening if you are going to be a home............

Actually, Bill, I mentioned the OS 75AX's because I already have them. I really want to keep the engine in the cowling as much as possible so will be reading up on what is being used and go from there. I've plenty of time...there's a heck of a lot of BIG parts to cut out before I get to the engine mounting stage. I figure a year and maybe two before I get her in the air. Nothing fancy...just a real nice sport style plane to enjoy at the field.

Soft landings.

She will fly with the 75's, but like handyman said above, she will be marginal
in the air, you will have to build her super light and retracts will probably be
out of the question, they alone will add somewhere in the region of 3-5 +
pounds. True the original was powered by 60's back in the day when this
aircraft model was designed and engines have come a long way in power output
since then, but I wouldn't risk a years plus work on the plane being marginal
on power............but it is your call and only you can make that choice........

I myself haven't made my final decision on power but it will either be ST 2300's
(1.41 Cu. In.)on glow fuel or those RCS SV26's (1.59 Cu. In.)mounted sidewinder
with custom Pitts style mufflers.

What do you guys think about using a pair of Saito 180's? Ihave one now, and plan to really deck mine out with scale detail( I think a plane this big really deserves it!), so the all up weight will probably be up there. Are the 180's going to be overkill?
Thanks,
Bryan

The last one I built and flew had Saito 150's, so the 180's should haul that puppy! Iv gone away from alky motors becaus of the fuel milage. I prefer gas now on most of my planes. A good selection would be the RCS SV26's for the 310. Price is right- - $175.oo ea and they are gas. I would be ordering a pair for my glass body 310 had I not got a stash of G-23's when they were closing them out for the G26's. Sorting out wing parts from the lumberyard called a kit as we speak!

Talking about scale detail, Bob Dively models has a cockpit kit available
for the Nosen Cessna 310: I-116 Cessna 310 for Nosen $49.50
their web site is: http://www.bobdivelymodels.com/4.htm

I will be ordering it in the coming weeks and will give a report on what
it looks like.

TooLow is this the kit you have installed in your current flying 310?

A reversed drawing is like the old days when you "oiled" your plans so you could build the other 1/2 of the wing. This just makes it easier and lets you non-Nosen owners to see how BIG this bird is! Glad to help!

Hey guys, I need all of you that have pics of your Nosen Cessna 310's
that are in flying condition to e-mail me pics of your aircraft so that I
can print some on my computer, as I want to send Bud Nosen a nice
parchment printed & framed document to honor his achievement on
the design of the 310 and let him know about our club here on RCU
and that he is "Honorary Chairman". I would like to include some pics of the
current flying 310's and also some construction pics of those in the works.

My e-mail for those pics is: [email protected]

Many Thanks to all for making this a continued success........

Rick Martin was a charter pilot in St. Louis MO and had several beutiful Nosen 310's. He was a professional builder and sure helped me when I got in the game. Last I heard he was selling everything...anybody know what happened to them....?

Last I heard Bud was retired, and still living in Minnesota,
there is still a web site for Bud Nosen Models which sells balsa,
I am sending them an e-mail this weekend and will be calling them
one day next week. On various threads here on RCU dealing with
a few of Bud's other designs, I think on several occasions some one
said Bud had a bad taste from his dealings with AA Industries and
doen't like to talk about anything to do with his models. I don't
know if there is much truth to this or not, but I want him to know that
there is still a bunch of us "Old Timers" and a few youngsters out here
that are greatful for his designs and still build them today, especially
the one this club was formed for the Nosen Cesnna 310. I will keep all
posted on my communications with BN Models............

Update on Bud Nosen, I was looking in the kit building
threads and came across a thread on Bud's Giant
Trainer and a guy wrote this: "Bud Nosen is a member of
my flying club, Bay City Flyers in Land-O-Lakes, Florida
."
