Got a PM from another member here on RCU:

Yes, the one and only real, original Bud Nosen. He winters in Florida and back to Minnesota for the summers.

Will call BN Models today to see if I can get any more info.

I have the Bud Nosen Trainer, but it was damaged when I moved from Pennsylvania to Maryland. I am in the process of making repairs and recovering it. It would be nice if I could get a copy of the plans and templates.

I also have the Bud Nosen Gere Sport and the Bud Nosen 310 unbuilt, but this group got me enthused enough to start building the 310.
Thanks for all the inspiration. It would be great to hear from Bud on this list as well.
Regards,
Doug

Doug,
I'm somewhat of a collector of BN kits also! I have the Gere Sport, the Cessna 310( of course) and a BN P-51 all unbuilt, but I am looking forward to starting all of them! I wish some of the other kits like the Corsair and the P-47 were still available. I used to drool over the Bud Nosen adds when I was a kid, and couldn't afford those "big planes", so I've had to wait until I grew up to try and get the kits for them, at a substantial increase in price no less!

Brian, dont feel bad. I too have a batch of the Nosen kits (unbuilt)! I have several of the 310kits,Nosen trainers, Aeronca Champ, Citabria and Mr Mulligan. I too used to drool over the ads and have added to the stash at somewhat of an increase over the mag. prices. I am in the process of repairing my #5 Nosen 310 and building #6. Yea Im a glutten for punishment!

Does anyone know how to get hold of a moderator? I found the article in RCM that I was looking for( actually ended up being just a 1 page thing) but I want to make sure we are OK before posting it on here for everyone. I have tried emailing RCM at their plans website, to get permission to put the article on here, but got no reply. I also found another article on scratch building a Cessna 310 I believe in quarter scale, that was written by Don from Don's hobbies, that may be of interest as well. I just don't want to end up getting whacked on the pee pee over it.
Thanks,
Bryan

Warbirdmustang,,,I talked to Don at Don's Hobby Shop the other day and he scatchbuilt a beutiful 29% 1975 Cessna 310R model. I was warned to stay on topic when referencing the 310 R model in an earlier post...so, we need to stick to the Bud Nosen 310 on this thread......but the 310 R...will always be in our hearts.............If someone wants to start a Cessna 310 R thread.....I have some things to contribute........Rick

I have an interesting Nosen 310 story some of you might enjoy, A guy in our model airplane club (Des Moines Modelaires) was an excellent builder, and quite industrieous as well. A member hired him to build a 310 for him. Well Chuck (the builder) started in on it, he got one with very light wood and Chuck was an experienced builder so he didn't leave any excess wood anywhere it could be removed. He got it all framed up and ready to cover. It was VERY light. A buddy told me that it was probably 4-5 pounds below any he had seen personally. Then My friend Chuck died, he had been both a buddy in the club, and my algebra teacher in high school. It was a pretty sad thing to say the least. After a long time the owner picked up the plane and took it home. He wasn't much for building, and I think his heart wasn't in it for other obvious reasons. Years later it was for sale at the local hobby shop. My buddy and I thought about it many times, and there it sat for quite awhile. Well you know how it goes ..sometimes spur of the moment purchases are smarter than thinking things through.

It was bought, ....just when you get used to seeing something and take it for granted it was no more.
Awhile later we started asking about the plane ,you know how many times people have started a Nosen 310 and give up ! Usually its the third owner that actually finishes it. Well come to find out this plane had been bought by a local missionairy of all things! And as strange as that seems he was shipping it along with his other property to Brazil for his next asignment !

So we have given up on seeing that plane at the field, an auction, or swap meet. Its just another interesting story in the hobby now.
hopefully one that was interesting to hear.
By the way my buddy has a beautiful 310, the long nose version, Robby the moderator has seen it fly at the midwest twin fly in Camberidge Iowa. I might add he saw it fly in wind gusting into the 40's !!! there were some scary brave souls that day flying just so it wouldn't be a BLOWOUT!

foodstik,

Where did this guy live that was going to brazil? I bought a 310 in the bones from a guy that was going to brazil about two or three years ago. he lived in ottumwa. It is now flying in milatary colors. Let me know it would be interresting to see if it is the same one. check out my models to see it. By the way if you see dan hansen slap him in the head and tell him it is from his ex brother-inlaw.

Allen

P.S. go to you tube and type in Allen Walzer's cessna 310 to see a video of it flying 2 years ago at ames ,Iowa fly-inn

Your kidding ! that has to be it!
I think I saw it up at Ames myself. That is so funny. I am not sure if he was from Ottumwa but it has to be the same guy. Well I am glad it never left our airspace so to speak.

I will definately give Dan a bad time when I see him, I am glad I wrote the story down or I would have never known the plane is still around the state.

Oh yeah th time frame on you buying it is right on the money.. Its definately the same bird.

Allen is the military version you have fitted with retracts?
And what engines are fitted?

Bill,

the milatary 310 does not have retracts but it has a very beefed up gear. I'am runing a pair of Fox 2.4cu in. (40cc) motors with 15.75 x 13 inch 3 blade APC props. Her sisters both have robart retracts under them but this one is my everyday flier.

Not unusual. The 310 just wanted to be closer to its Mom. A giant Balsa tree in the middle of the Rain Forest.

Hey guys, my highlight today was a breif chat with Mr. Bud Nosen for
a few minutes. He still owns the original Cesnna 310 and it is still powered
with the original 60's that it was designed with. At 74 & semi-retired he
still builds model airplanes and runs his business, "Bud Nosen Models".
BTW he said if his memory is correct the original weighed in at about
16 pounds and is the model featured on the original kit box art.

I have sent a rough draft of a plaque commemorating Bud Nosen for his
achievements in Giant Scale Modelling and especialy the Cessna 310 and
letting him know he has the position of "Honorary Chairman" of the "Nosen
Cessna 310 Club". The plaque will be approximately 12" x 14" and done
by my laser cutter guy. I'll post a pic of it when it is done.

Bill,

Excellent idea on the presentation plaque, I'm sure he will appreciate it. Just remembered, I still have the box my 310 came in, never gave it a thought, been using it for balsa storage over in a dark corner of the shop. My 310 is about 27 years old now. It makes my 310 a little more special to me knowing the person that designed and produced it is still with us. Even moreso if he stops in here every so often to chat with us all.

Allen,

The one that I enlarged and framed and it hangs over the fireplace mantle is the one of you standing with your transmitter in hand, doing the run-up with it before taking off. I didn't want to share that one.

Thanks CK1, great photos. What size are your tube spars for the plug-ins. Also, how far from the leading edge do you have your retracts pivot point as well as how far from the end of the center wing section. Thanks Again.

Hi BillyJ, are you refering to 2 of the Zenoa G-20's ???????
If so this plane will fly with just about anything gasser up
to around G-38's, depending on the overall weight. What kind
of weight are you sitting on with the plane stripped?

BTW glad to see another 310 in Louisiana........ Send me your
e-mail addy and full name, I'll put ya in the club roster.......
my e-mail is: [email protected]
