ORIGINAL: flier

Tom and Silversurfer,
After flying this plane, how well would you say a DA-50 setup will do?
I hear Silversurfer saying go the lighter route and just wondering.
Tom I hear your thought also Evo 58, the engine I was thinking for this plane.
The ZDZ-80 would be wild also though....
Need more input . . . .
The DA-50 has roughly the same power as a G62 with 1.5lbs less weight. The G62 flew it well at about 17.5 lbs., so My estimate is that teh DA-50 will be excellent, except...

The DA-50 being so light may be a problem balancing. I'm putting one together right now so we will see soon.

But my ideal setup is the Evo 58. The Sukhoi with this engine will be about 17lbs. +/- 1/2 lb. This will be a spectacular setup.

ZDZ-80 would be more power than I would enjoy I think.

Hi Tom,
In regards to the Evo 58, what type of muffler do these engines come with or are there aftermarket ones for them (Pitts style)? Thanks!

BTW I sell the Evo 58s.

For a muffler Bisson is making a good one, but I'm not sure if it will all fit in the cowl because of the squarish nature of the can and the round cowl.

A side mount seems to be the easiest to use, Ithink Bisson makes one of these too. I used a side mount bisson with my G62 and it worked well.

Is there room for a canister if the Evo 58 is mounted on its side or at an angle?

Probably not, the landing gear mount is in the way. If the canister were mounted fairly high it might clear.

Looks like no room for a canister in this setup.
Landing gear mount, down low, blocking the normal path.
Moving up you'll be into the Wing tube, and fuel tank mount.
Maybe a short can, like the ones Chip sells, could be made to work.
Interesting custom header!

Haven't gotten the plane yet Tom.
Should get it 9/31/05.
Ordered a MVVS 58 from David to go into this plane.
Any plans to get a custom muffler made to fit?

Actually yes. I spoke with Lance at Bisson today about making a side mounted can for teh 58 that would fit nicely into the Sukhoi. He said he would do it, but I suggest you call him and tell him you want one too.

Maybe that will give him extra incentive.

Tom,

I thought I should let you know ... BME had already shipped the Challenger ... so I am going to have to wait a bit on the Sukhoi. But after seeing you and David fly the Sukhoi with the da50, I am going to be forced to add a monoplane to my hanger.

Folks, this is one clean looking and flying plane ... and you should have seen the smile on David's face after landing

I am anxious to hear the Sukhoi w/ Evo 58 flight reports.

Thanks again Tom,

Jim Olson
