After waiting more than 6 months after having the plane completed i finally got to maiden the Special today. I have a Brison 3.2 on it and added no extra weight at all to the nose. The servos are all in the rear 5645s and 645s 5945s on alerons. This bird flys exceptional and is a great pattern plane. I am running a NX 22/8 prop and the motor is new. I have CG at 3inches and it could go back a little ways more. The inverted flight was great, i just had to add a tounch of elevator to fly it level. Basically hands off inverted. The landings i feel could be a little better by moving CG back a 1/2 inch but no more. I flew 9 flights on it today with a 5 to 7 mph wind . Tracks very well and didnt do a lot of hovering because i want to get some time on the motor . The only issue i have is i would like to slow the speed down a little. Maybe switch to a different brand prop or different size but if i go with a smaller prop it will be over reving maybe i just dont know . The plane pulled great on vertical and was unlimited vertical at 3/4 throttle. Any suggestions on props i could use, but other than that issue its a keeper. I also used a Bissen inverted muffler and i have heard the Bissen cuts performane , i dont agree , i cut 1 inch off the ends of the stacks and i feel the rpms were good for a new motor. DIdnt tach it but it was very impressive and had a nice sound to it .

Im a little confussed about why you think its to fast. after reading your post I get the feeling your landings are a little on the hot side. Moving the CG back will help. When your on final do you tend to have to keep pulling the nose up? or are you having to push it back down all the time? A wider prop will help slow you down on the down lines they tend to act like a speed break from what im told One of the club's members has a NX 23-8 on a DA-50 He flys a extream flight yak 54 i beleive and he loves that prop I run a Menz 22-8 on the DA 50 while breaking it in anyway I fly the Edge I Tend to push the nose down a little on approch to keep the speed up and blip the throttle to keep it from stalling i feel im plenty far back on my CG Its not the same wing as yours so the mesurement is of no use to you But i feel moving yours back will make you a lot happier than switching props Im considering moving up to a 23-8 at least trying one to see if it pulls out with a little more enthusiasm. good luck

I have to pull back on the elevator when on final i yes i think to the cg needs back a little and i think a wider prop like the menz or 3w would help with braking. Other than that issue i love the plane. I thought to that a 23/8 would be a good prop to try. The Brison really screams with the current prop 22/8 NX.

MSC 22-8 is really sweet. Super wide blades make it slow down real nice. I use this on a my Special with a FPE 3.2 that is real close to a Brisson. Turns about 7000 rpm and pulls like a train.

Nice job! Sounds like you have a winner. Enjoy that airplane. I just ordered a couple of MSC-22/8 myself for the TAURUS. Can't wait to try them.

I finally got to fly mine today. What a great flyer it only took 3 clicks of up and no aileron trim and it was flying hands off. I was really nervous just like it was my first flight when I started 4 years ago. After I got the shaking in my knees to settle down I really enjoyed the rest of the flight. I flew it for 12 minutes and the plane was smooth and showed no bad habits. To check the stall break I had the throttle at idle and the elevator all the way up and the plane just kept flying. The engine was idling a little high and the plane would not stall. It finally broke as soon as I let up on the elevator. The stall was very gental and broke to the left a little. I only flew it on low rates and they were fine for the kind of flying that I do. I needed to add some expo on the aileron and elevator. I flew around the pattern and did some rolls and a couple of loops. I was really getting into the flight and started to set up for landing. I brought the plane around and had a nice smooth landing. What a relief I am glad that the first flight is over. The DA-50 ran great and just needs to have the low end needle turned a touch leaner. I was using a 22x8 Bolly prop and the engine had gobs of power. I only flew the plane at half throttle and could climb straight up as far as I wanted to. My plane came out at 17 lbs 6 ozs total weight without fuel.
Tom Thanks for a great flying plane
I will be ordering one of the new 25% 540T this week to try out my 3W-24 on and I will do a build and flight review for those interested.

This was the second weekend flying my Extra Special. This is one great flying plane. I'm running a Taurus 52 up front and 5945's on everything, except for a 5735 on the rudder pull/pull. The weight came out at 17lbs. 4 oz. and balanced at 3" at the tips without any weight added. I may add a heavy tailwheel to move the CG back a little more but I am VERY happy with this plane.
BTW, the Taurus is swinging a Zinger 22x10 at 6900 rpm. It is very smooth and I've had several people comment on its outstanding power in the air.
I don't think it gets any better than this.
Thanks Tom.

I flew the extra today with the new MSC 22/8 prop. What a difference the bird landed a lot better just settled down and right before tounchdown i gave a little elevator and it settled right in for a good landing. The motor actually loved the MSC prop and it sounded better than it ever has before. The midrange was smoother because of the extra load on the motor i beleive. There was no usual midrange burble like with the other props. I am feeling more comfortable now with the plane.

Bruce,
Told ya so!!
I don't know what it is about the MSC 22-8, but the 3.2 Brison and that prop are the perfect combo! Now just move the c/g back to 3-3/8" and it'll be like downtown. Just to check it out, take off the spinner and it should be just about there.

Yep Pat i got the cg right at that point now i actually used the method that Tom explained on marking the cg with a chalk string and rechecked the cg, works good when you have to pick the plane up by yourself and not being able to pick it up by the wingtips . Believe it or not i actually had to add 2 ozs of weight in the rear to get it to the 3 and 3/8 mark. When mounting the Brison i used 1/4 inch aircraft ply in making my standoff and used a lot of ply so this in itself added quite of bit of weight to the front end. Tne motor only has about 2 hours of run time on it so it will get stronger as time goes on. I did swithch to the Mobil xt racing oil and mixed it at 32/1 . I have always used AMsoil at 80 to 1 and i really dont think th oil mix makes a lot of difference on performance but so far i am impressed with the Mobil sythetic mix. Hey will talk to ya later thanks for the interest and reply . I also got your message on the email addresses . Bruce
