I have the Extra 300 with a DA50 and Slimline Pitts muffler. It isn't really that loud. I also have a second DA on a Double Vision and that one has the standard DA muffler for the 50. It is a lot louder than the slimeline Pitts type muffler. One of the guys I fly with has a Double Vision on a Chip Hyde Quiet pipe and it is significanly quieter on the ground than my two DA50's but It can get loud in the air if you let the prop rip. Just my opinion but I think the Slimline Pitts would be my choice of the the three options so long as you are not flying around ripping the prop all day long.

Actually a good compromise is the Bisson power pitts that we sell. It has large 7/8" outlets, quieter than a slimline but still makes good power.

If you plug it with a screw be sure to use a gasket of some sort or you will end up with all kinds of black gunk all over that beautiful engine, don't ask how I know.

If your looking at canisters the MTW75 is a perfect match. Heaps of power and very little noise. Usually if their is a glow plane in the air it is hard to hear mine unless it is a full throttle.

alright I got my Brisson Pitts Muffler From Tom( Thank You by the way for sending it out before you left for toledo)
My question is Do it cut the cowl ring or do I cut some off of the pipes to get it to fit inside the cowl?? If I need to cut the pies how much did other people cut off? If you have any pictures also that would be great.Thanx

I would not cut the cowl ring, since the cowl slides on in a lower postion then slides up on the lower tabs will allow you to cut the pipes. Simply put the cowl on but dont slide it up, measure the distance from the bottom of the fuse to the top of the cowl ring at the bottom, this is the maximum length they can be to pass the cowl ring. Then you can install the muffler measure down and keep as much of the pipes as you can but still miss the cowl ring. You can then cut the bottom of the cowl to allow the pipes to exit along with geat through the bottom of the cowl. Such as this, http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4541104 hope that helps some.

If you do it right, you can remove some of the cowl bottom to provide better access to the lower cowl mounting screws. Look at it and see what will work best. No matter what you do you will have to make sure there is adaquate open area for hot air to exit the bottom of the cowl. There's a raised portion on the bottom of the cowl. Avoid removing the lip of that raised portion. It really helps the cooling by keeping it there after opening up the flat portion of that raised area. A tight cowl means a cooked off engine or one that will always start to lose power in flight because it's retaining heat.
There is no effect on performance when cutting the pipes on a Bisson muffler, except for one minor point. Bisson mufflers all arrive with exit opening diameters that are quite a bit less than the rest of the pipe. Cutting off that pinched tip always increases power/rpm output to some extent. The length of the pipe does not matter. Make them short enough that a nose over will not permit ground contact with the pipes. It sucks when they get broken loose because they were too long.

i have an observation on the da50 with the slimline pits and the da stock muffler
based on my plane and parts
the stock muffler is more than 5 ozs lighter than the slimline pits
the stock muffler allowed my da50 to spin 350 more rpms hot !!!!
I thought i had unlimited vertical on my 16.5 pound WH 50cc extra but one of the bolts on the slimline came lose and in the process striped the bolt holes in the da plus broke the mounting bracket. So in the interest of me getting to fly this week i scored my friends stock muffler off one of his planes. I tapped out the bolt holes to use 6mm screws enlarged the holes in the muffler to except the 6mm bolts and mounted it with no problems
The results were the plane is now ridiculously powered compared to last week. the power diff on the up lines is way better, snaps on the up line and back to full speed up line with crisp point rolls and what ever i want to do till the plane is out of site. Even on my badly executed snaps regaining speed on the up line was quick.
I know i have heard that you would get some more rpms on the stock muffler but the rpms that i got are crazy good all the rpms were measured with the same rpm gauge with the same 23a vess prop after a 20 min flight with no cool down so im confident the readings i got were accurate. Needles to say i will not be going back to the slimline pitts.
Edit ps the rpms measured between mufflers were several days apart in about the same temp but i dont know if the humidity was different or not.

it is the new version extra. And did I say how much I hate cutting cowls[:'(] I am going to have to take a lot of measurements so
I only cut once or should I say in the right spot!!!after the cowl is done all i have left is the rudder pull pull and getting the throws right.
