RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!

Well it took me over an hour to unpack everything. I was surprised to see two boxes when I got home... Then again I took way too many pictures...

There were a couple scary-looking holes in the fuselage box. One turned out to be nothing, the other one, whatever it was that poked through the outer and the inner box, and caused damage. Halfway between the cowl-mount former and the rearmost former of the hatch opening, there is a dent/break in the sheeting just below the rail where the hatch sits. However the covering was not pierced and it will be an easy fix, just push the balsa back out and CA it.

The cowl had a small dent on the rear edge, almost looked like someone tried to fold over the trailing edge.

Of course neither of these incidents are anything Tom's fault as UPS are package smashers, seemingly more so with packages marked fragile.

Other things of note:

The polished landing gear is cool. I likey.

The wing tube seems much longer than was the one on my Edge. Could be my memory though.

The wheel pants sure are pretty.

I like how many of the little baggies in the parts kit are labeled to tell what the hardware is used for.

The covering job is very good and frankly, it's likely better than what I could do. I looked every part over and no joke, not a wrinkle anywhere.

I fitted the wing tube and slid the wing halfs on to check the fit. Everything lined up dead-nuts perfect without me having to do a single bit of twisting. Excellent. Same deal with the horizontal stabs.

The manual(s) are definitely thicker than what I remember came with my Edge. Time to get reading!

I do have that slight "gap" at the one part of the cowl when I fitted it like the other guy had posted a picture of. It may change after I get the cowl bolted on and snugged up, so I'll wait to see at that point.

I'm very impressed and Tom has done a great job here. The attention to detail is great and you can see he really thinks of the customer when putting these kits together with the accessories, and manuals, etc. Very pro-active. I'd be curious to know how many aircraft Tom has sold since he founded WH, I'm guessing it's a lot and now I know why.

Question, I'm no pattern flyer by any means and lean more towards the 3D end of the spectrum. It seems that the forward stab position is the one to use for this, and what several of you are going with. This is the position I'm thinking of using. Thoughts?

Also, everything is labled "21". I'll assume this means I have the 21st Suk?

I had posted the gap pics - I had it out tuning the motor the other day and you couldn't really tell. I'm generally a stickler for details but this one isn't that bad. I agree there are likely more that may be cut oddly.

BTW - I received mine back in July and was shipped #43.

How are you guys putting the stickers on? I was thinking of using the windex method to "float" them around and get them in the proper place then squeegee over them...

Unless there's a better method - I want to try to eliminate as many air bubbles as possible.

These stickers are the type which get positioned and then you rub on the top surface to activate the adhesive. I don't know what Windex might do, profesionals use something called Rapidtac which allows you to move them on a fiml of liquid, then it evaporates.

For those of you thinking about doing the scheme with Honda across the wings and wrapped over the top of the fuse, take note that the sticker setup supplied IS one that was on the full-scale aircraft... Just an FYI.

go with the rapidtac that tom had said. It works great. another product is called splash works just as good

I've used windex as well and it worked fine with these graphics - no problems with the adhesive once it was squeegeed out. Porbably better products out there, but just my experience..

I put mine on dry. I marked the plane with masking tape. Then I started on one end with a Bondo squeegee. Not a single bubble or wrinkle.

Took the time to read the whole build thread over past couple days in between work. After all the trouble I am still having with a 3w 106 that runs great unless you roll over, I want this one to be worry free.

Tom, looks like this ones a winner, you'll be getting a call from me for an order this afternoon after work 5:30 Eastern, hope you're still open for business. I'd like to get your advice on the whole package, soup to nuts.

Have seen other guys flying WH planes but this will be my first.

I used water with a couple of drops of dish soap in a old spray bottle...this is the method recommended by several graphics providers...windex is not recommended. I wet the wing, then wet the graphics...position the graphics, squeegee the water with a credit card type squeegee...worked great for me (both times ). Best of luck!

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!

I decided to just do them dry. For the large decals, I simply cut off 2 or 3 inches of the backing and left the rest on. Positioned it and stuck down the exposed part then peeled off the backing for the rest of the decal. I used a body filler scraper to work them down. Very few bubbles...

I did find the cowl stickers(the Honda logos) difficult to put on due to the curvatures of the cowl. I did end up with a couple small wrinkles but nothing that will be noticed unless you're real close.

I'm trying to get this as close to scale looking as my amateurish self can, so for the stickers on the horizontal stab, I simply laid the sticker across the entire stab and elevator with the top sticky sheet still on. Before I peeled it off, I used an x-acto to slice the decal exactly in the center of the hinge line, right through the translucent top sheet... Peeled it off, and stuffed the overhanging decal down onto the bevel. It looks pretty decent. I may scavenge some vinyl from a leftover decal or two, to fill in the rest of the bevel so the white color goes all the way to the hinge line.

I also mounted the gear, patience required on that one. Holes don't line up perfectly, so it's hard to get the screws started without cross-threading. In the end I think I did get one crossed up, but it tightened down well so I don't think it will be an issue.

There are also several graphic application lubricants. I prefer it leaves no residue. It is not expensive at all. Brand doesn't matter. I use Rapid Tac.

Sqeegie.... a credit card or body filler one works well. recommend using a handkerchief wrapped around it to prevent scratching.

It allow you to move the graphic around for a short period of time before sweeqing it. I use the same technique for monocote over monocote. never a bubble or blemish.

Headed out for maiden this am - double and triple checked everything, so perhaps a vid or pics later today. Will post a flight report later :)

Build included - DA50, Hitec 5955's all around, Fromeco regs/switches, and a cannister setup. Stabs in the forward location and no weights yet... Normal 50 deg on high rates avail and by the suggestions here for low - should be a sweet day!!

Anyone else had a problem with the aileron servo mounting wood coming loose? The screws are tight no wobble there, but the servo in my right wing is developing a good bit of play. I took the servo out and the wood for servo mounting is very loose. Glad I caught this now as opposed to in flight...

Maiden Flight Report:
Let me start with one word - SWEET!!! :DOk, now for the details. I had already ran the motor (DA50) on the ground so idle settings were already dialed in. CG balance was at the back half of the wing tube. Horizontal stabs were in the front location. I fired up the motor and taxiied out on the runway and fed in the power. The plane picked up speed and lifted off perfectly - so I climbed out and started on the trims. Let me say - two clicks of right aileron and one click of up elevator. I had it trimmed by the time I finished the downwind leg! Did the standard inverted 45 deg, etc.. and I like the CG where it is now, but may bring it back a tad later - not sure as it just felt good. Normal maiden butterflies were gone in minutes - felt like I'd been flying it for a long time - just really comfortable.

So motor is running ok - need to lean the low end a bit and it feels like the high end is fine. Kept it high enough 'til I get it tuned a bit more. It was a cooler day and temps on the motor were pretty low - using the cannister from Tom was very nice. I was impressed with the sound and we'll see where it is with performance after tuning is done... Got almost 3/4 of a gallon today through it today.

Started wringing it out and love how this thing floats! Inverted flat spins were perfect - just floats, and with power on - it wanted to climb. Knife edge had a small amount of tuck to the gear - easy to mix out. No rudder-aileron coupling that I could tell. Uplines - the motor had plenty of power - can't wait until it's tuned better and gets some more fuel through it. Downlines were perfect and braking was what I expected. Threw it on high rates and it was a riot!! My face hurt from grinning.

Kudos to Tom on the Sukhoi - very sweet![sm=thumbup.gif]

Fixed my balooning issue on landing...2 flat washers to take out down thrust and it now flies hands off and landings are near automatic, comes in at a perfect angle, if you cant land it now you need another hobby.
Inverted is neutral.
Elevator at the forward position seems a non issue, flies really close to my V2 extra.
Motor is much happier with baffles and the extra hole in the lip of the cowl as per Silversurfers suggestion.

Every airplane (no matter who made it) will require a little "tuning" to get things exactly where you want them. The best flying planes are the ones that have been adjusted to match the owner's style and requirements.

The only plane I have flown in the last 5 years that I felt did not require any changes after the first flight was the new 100CC Extra 300. I attribute this to the fact that it is an exact copy of the 41% Extra which got a whole lot of adjusting before we decided it was right.

Is there a manual available for the Sukhette (50cc), or do you use the generic manual that is available on the Wild Hare website. Also what are the recommended servo sizes for the plane.

Thanks
Pupmeister

RE: 50cc Sukhette Build Thread, now in progress!!

Use the generic manual, plus the detailed addendum which gives specifics about this plane. It should be on the web site soon, or email [email protected] and Iwill send it to you.

we ordered two SU-26 special kits last week, they are on the way. Ben and I are going to have a blast flying those in formation. We will post videos of it on our web site www.montrealflight.com

I have a Honda civic 2006, do you think its going to fit in it ?

Big thanks to the guys that make this forum works!

rroy

I know this is a really old part of the thread, but were you able to get the plane into your civic?

Thanks
Pupmeister
