I just purchased two YS DZ engines. One is mounted on a 2 meter pattern plane and the other is a new spare. The one that is mounted has not been run in more than a year. The previous owner said he oiled the engine regularly but hadn't started it. My question is do I need to send these back to YS and have them gone through or do I just start it and see what happens?

I'm no YS expert but if it were mine, this is what I'd do. If in fact he in fact he " oiled the engine regularly" I would pull the backplate to see what's going on inside. Also pull the glow plug and roll the engine over to clear any excess oil in the combustion chamber. It's possible there is an excess of oil in the motor. It might also be prudent to pull the fuel pressure regulator just to have a look see. It the spare is in fact new and never run, then nothing should be or need be done to that engine. If all looks OK, no rusty bearings or other funk in the engine then go ahead and fire it up and see what you have.

My first question is what are th e engines in question and are they CDI or glow plug fired? Always good to know which flavor of DZ we are talking about.
Next question is, what did the previous owner use to oil them. If it was petroleum based oil and it got into the fuel system then it will attack the components and you would want to send them in for a check up. Do not go poking around in the fuel pump (a DZ does not have a regulator it has a pump) as if you assemble it incorrectly it will not function and improper assembly and damage to the pump is too easy to do if you are not extremely careful.
Now assuming there was a non petroleum oil used and no castor in the fuel and the fuel was run completely out, I would flush the engine with raw fuel to remove the oil, fill the tank with a good fuel (I like CP 30%) and give it a go. However, castor fuels will tend to gum and clog the fuel system if stored for a few months so at more than a year you may run into clogs that will be a pain. In that case I would send them into YS and have them gone through.
