Default Starting points.

Hi dave...

I now have @4 gallons of fuel through the 110, and notice that I seem to have lost my Idle.

I know that after a while, I will need to re-check setings, as nothing stay's the same for long, But want to ask about the low (Idle) needle setting.

I know enough to open the main needle @ 2 turns from closed, and to have the regulator flush with the casting to start, But where should the airbleed needle be as a good starting point?

Lately, every landing, the engine dies just as soon as the plane touches the ground.
If I set the idle high enough to keep the engine running, @ 2200-2300 rpm, the plane doesn't want to sit down!

(an unexpected result of being Overpowered with the YS 110 I think)

I used to have a really reliable idle at or below 1700...she would sit there and tick over all day! But not any more.

I'm having to raise idle to compensate for something, and would think the easiest place to start is to reset everything and re-tune.

While in there, I'm going to re-check the valve clearance as well....Is .003" still the target?????.

I know I may be WAYY OFF BASE Here, But I was wondering, since the engine is mounted inverted is it possible the plug was being doused out by fuel as the "Thump" of landing happens.

Since so much of the plane has to some apart just to get to the engine and make all these adjustments, I want to do everything by the book before I Button her all back up.

Thanks again!

Larry

Use the setup at www.ysperformance.com 1.5 to 2 turns open to start on the idle.

Reset the valves, I'll bet that's the problem if it's never been done. If the plug is not new, change it. It's sometimes helpful to reach into the plug with a #11 xacto blade and pull the element up out of the plug about .030" or so. Makes the plug run hotter.

You didn't mention fuel. What kind? Ever tried 30% heli fuel? Makes lots of hp and also makes problems disappear.

No the valves have never been done.

Fuel is Coolmaster 30% Heli.

I printed out the instructions.

And thanks again for the help.

Well dave...She idles again...WONDERFULLY!

I adjusted the valves per our conversation, and re-tuned the low speed mixture, high speed mixture, and regulator....

Idles Wonderfully..I don't think any other engine can tick..tick...tick over like a properly adjusted YS !!!!

One last question tho...and this one should be easy....but I can be kinda thick!~

at WOT...when you go from idle to WOT the transition is smooth and POWERFULL!

as the engine spends more time at WOT...the RPM seem to drop and the tone changes.

Is this running too lean or rich at the top end??

My thinking is that it is too rich at WOT...but that may be because I'm afraid to lean her out too far.

Again..Plug is OS "F"
Fuel Coolpower 30% Heli (20% oil)
prop is a graupner 14x7 3-blade.

Rpm at WOT on the ground is @8800 then she drops to 8500 or there abouts after a few seconds.

I have a M/A 14X7 3-blade...and that should spin @ 9000-+ last time I tested. But have been running the graupner exclusively.

Thanks

Larry

I think the engine is getting hot and dropping off due to being slightly overloaded. We like to run the 110 at about 9500 peaked plus or minus. Lots of guys run them on funfly type airplanes at over 10000 peak, but they seldom run at full throttle for long periods.

I would put a little lighter prop on it and let the engine breath!

Glad she's running well.

Good Flying!

Hmmm...
I was under the impression that in order to keep from over revving in the air when the prop unloads, that I needed to keep my ground RPM at or just below 9000.

Ok...I will put the M/A prop on and get some numbers...

What about a 2 blade selection...????

Plane is a P-51 Mustang (H9 Miss America)...

I fly pretty scale.... anything the real plane can do..I try to emulate.

I'll order a new spinner and a couple of props based on your selections..

THanks

Larry

Try 14x10, 14x12, 15x8 or 15x10. The engine can take 11000 in the unload, but you'll never get it that high unless you prop for 10500 on the ground.
