Default YS63 new engine running issue, help needed.

I'm trying to troubleshoot either the engine or my ability to tune it. This is the new version YS63, I just got it from Ohio RC. My background is that I have very successfully run old version 63, a 53, a 110, and two stroke 45. I've had these engines apart and replaced a variety of parts over the years. HOWEVER this new engine has me stumped.

It is nearly new probably no more that 30 minutes total run time, none long enough to get into the air. It runs for a bit and dies. Prolonged idle is good at close to 2000rpm. I'm getting great rpm at full throttle. Trouble is it won't run long. Seems like it runs for a bit then just dies. Since there's lots of smoke during transition I was suspecting rich regulator. I reset it to flush, that was worse. Went back in on Reg. and retuned. Seemed to run a bit longer but then exhibited same behavior. Just died, though it seems to slow down as it dies. Seems like still rich on the regulator.

The Reg can be turned in about 4 turns from flush from what I can tell. Is there someone who has experience with this engine and reg who can suggest a good spot for the reg? Flush is not a good setting, very rich. How sensitive is the reg? Should I be making 1/8 turn, 1/2 or full turn on Reg? Do you think this is my problem with this NEW engine. What else do I try before sending it back in?

I have tried new fuel, replaced plug with OS F and YS plug. Engine appears to be running VERY cool to touch (also suggesting RICH setting). Pressure in tank is good and is not leaking down. Fuel is YS20/20 and 30% Heli. Prop is APC 13x4W. Also, when the engine stops I've noted fuel dripping from carb. HELP.

Default RE: YS63 new engine running issue, help needed.

The external regulators don't use the reference of flush. I have set several of them and they are all turned inside of flush. Chances are you are just rich.....I would turn the regulator 1/4 turn increments until you get the reaction you want then dial it in smaller steps to fine tune it up.

To set the regulator.....put the engine at 4000rpm. The watch a tach for about 30secs to 1min. If the rpms slowly load up and die off its RICH dial the regulator IN (CW) to lean it. If the engine sits and surges its too lean and you need to richen it OUT or (CCW) on the screw richens. Once you have done this re-set the top end and the idle fine tuning adjustment with the air bleed screw. If the engine is doing these things well then the question is how does it take throttle. If it starts to hammer a little on the throttle up and detonate...but then runs correctly its just hair on the lean side of the regulator richen mayb 1/8 turn or less should stop this activity.

The regulator controls all aspects of the mixture. Its just the HS that the regulator has minimal effect on...However if the reg is too rich then the HS will tend to need a Leaner setting to get the High end right....Think about what the regulator is Doing. Richer on the regulator means its allowing more fuel to pass by...so the HS needs to be closed further to get the right mixture at the top end...If the regulator is too lean then not enough fuel is passing the reg and the HS will be set further open to get mixture correct.

This engine works the same as the old one...but the regulator housing has changed. So your old stand by reference location of flush likely changed with it.
