Decided to try the ngh 38 in a seagull spitfire. The firewall will need cut back about 30 mm, but it should work well. The plane looks really nice, my only gripe is that the flaps are warped.
Can anybody tell me what post or posts cover the mods that are needed on the ngh38 to reduce oil leakage, etc.
thanks, Bob

I've decided to try installing this engine using the DUBRO 1.20 soft mount. I needed to modify one of the mount rails by filing it at an angle to clear the carb. I also filed down some of the choke control arm material to also give me some clearance. I hope this works!

You ca get them at any well stocked traditional hardware store for less than $5.00 for all the components needed.

Well, I had the first failure of an NGH 38 the other day. Took both my Waco and ESM Corsair to the field. The NGH 38 on the Waco performed flawlessly. Launched the Corsair, flew about 5 circuits a few loops and rolls and then there was a horrible grinding noise coming from the aircraft accompanied by a loss of rpm and power. I managed to get the gear down and flaps positioned for a landing, 100 m out from the strip the engine stopped. Brought the model in on a fairly good profile for landing, but bounced and had no power available to recover. Flipped over, some damage to undercarriage, rudder and elevator. Worst thing is a tear in the fibreglass skin of the wing in the area I have found to be most prone to weakness and stress. This was my new wing that took me months to procure at great expense!!!
Well, it is repairable, but probably never be as good as new. More of a concern is the engine. Am going to strip it down soon and see what there is to see.
Flew the Waco afterwards and it was a reliable trouble free flight!!

Ugly Stik Test Bed
Actually got some airtime in with the NGH38 fitted to my scratch built 80inch Ugly Stik. Since I bought this engine back in April last year it has managed a couple of minutes in my aborted Stampe, and one flight in the Ugly Stick before the tailplane came off (!) and engine had to be dug out off the Hampshire country side. Since the rebuild of the Stik last November the weather in the UK has been relentlessly wet and windy so hardly any flying at all.
Anyway it has still only hauled the Stik around for a half dozen 10 minute flights so about 1 hours air time but so far hasn't missed a beat (even after it's interment) so still early days but I am very happy with it so far.
The plan is to run it in the Stik until the new Stampe is finished and then I transfer it so I won't be having a new model and untried engine combination.
Onwards and upwards

At the risk of hijacking this thread to talk about dogs I don't think mine would appreciate being called old - he was only 15 months when the picture was taken . I will say no more about dogs I promise.

You can make any mount "soft" by substituting "well nuts" for "T" nuts in the firewall. I use a nylock nut on the back to lock it in at whatever resilience wanted.

So... I stripped down my mis-behaving engine. I expected to find something obvious, but no smoking gun to explain the screeching sounds, loss of power and eventual stoppage. Bearings look o.k, no debris in the engine. Everything appears to be well lubricated. Only thing I have found is a few score marks in the piston sleeve. Possibly made by the ends of the piston rings although they seem to have a tapered end to them to avoid such scratching.
I will replace the bearings (because I've got some), probably replace the sleeve (if I can get one) and put it back together.
We'll see......

Yeah, possible I guess, although it did not seize and there is no evidence of overheating. It's almost as if the scoring in the barrel has been caused by debris entering the combustion chamber/barrel. Not all that surprising given there is no intake screen or filter. I know it would restrict airflow, maybe a screen would be o.k.
Real shame I can't get a new sleeve. You'd think, of all the spare parts you would stock and supply a sleeve would be high on the priority list. Not so with NGH and their pathetic little list of distributors.
Well... I'm going to try to hone out the sleeve and see what happens.

Oh.... just found the spares at Just Engines in the U.K. Maybe a little expensive, but they do stock a good range of parts including the sleeve!!! I'm on to it!!

Well, new front and rear bearings, new cylinder sleeve, new piston rings. Started up just fine, run in as per new engine, now making full power and idling o.k. Am pretty happy with it, just have to decide whether I trust it in a new model. I think I will....

This engine is way too much trouble. After 1 year of building a great scale P-40 and breaking this engine nicely and having it perfectly tuned it couldn't even generate enough power to get a 15lb model off the ground. The plane just went up for a second and turned and crashed. Just too little power. I was using a 3 blade prop maybe I should switch to a 2 bladed 16 x 8 wooden one.

Hey Basil, I am surprised it wouldn't fly a 15lb model. I am flying a 72" wingspan Waco no problems, and the engine does fly my 20lb 74" wingspan corsair with adequate power, both on XOAR 18 X 8 2- blade propellors. I did try to fly the corsair on a 3-blade propeller, it wasn't great.
Definitely 2-blade for me!!!

I ordered another one. I hope it ran as good as the 1st one. But not sure long term if it will vibrate apart. They need to get rid of the blue parts and just keep it silver.

wonder if there is any quality issues between hobyking and the others that sell it like hobbyking will sell the motors with rejected parts and sell cheaper. The one I had that ran good was from AMR.
