RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Hello colleagues
I am Eftat, I am quite new in this forum.
I have just finished my Sig Spacewalker 1/3 (pics will follow). Engine is OS FT-300.
Unfortunately its a little too heavy (23 lbs. with empty tank). Tank has additional 32 ozs.
Do you think it will fly ???

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Of course it will fly. 20 - 23 lbs is about what these things come out at with a heavy engine. I am only quessing but I bet Bob's with the flat - 4 in it will be more than that. I saw only one of these fly and it had the old OS 240 in it, I have wanted one ever since. That was almost 20 years ago and I can't really remember but I know it was in the 20+ lb. range. I have heard of them coming in at 19 - 20 lbs. but this is with Monocote and a light gasser. I would sell my kit and not bother to build it if I had to install anything other than a 2 or 4 cly. 4 - stroke.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I just came from the flying field (about 2 miles from my office) and I had a chance to fly a friends 1/3 Spacewalker. It was a little windy according to the flag about 10 to 15 on the ground. The plane was a dream to fly. He said "here, want to get you motivated to finish yours" and handed me the transmitter.
He has a question about his engine. The engine is a Saito 270 twin and sounds awesome. But, he has a problem with the engine when the carb is open more than half way. Then engine starts to gurgle and cut off. We leaned it and richened it but the problem is still there. The good news is that the plane flys great at 1/2 or less, but still a big problem with the engine not being consistent. The plane has igniters on both plugs. Has anyone here had a similar problem with the Saito 270?
DD
P.S. I have to finish my P-47 so I can finish my Spacewalker!

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Hi Lee,
I have Saito 300 Twin. Believe it or not, the low speed needle has a big effect on the high speed needle.
If the low speed needle is closed too much (too lean) it will affect the high speed to the point that you can take the high neelde out and it won't affect the running. Tell him to open up the low needle about a turn, then go set his high speed needle, tweak to max rpm at full throttle then richen until he sees about a 200-300 rpm on a tachometer, you have to use a tach. The he can drop down to idle and make small adjustments to the low end. After each adjustment go back and check the high end to see if the same rpm is achievable. You have to go back and forth several times before you dial it in just right. You can have a perfect idle and good low speed performance with no top end. The trick is to find the sweet spot that will give you both.
Have fun.
Bob

Thanks, I will call him in a few minutes. Man, flying that plane, even in the wind was great! The 270 powers that plane very well. And that twin 4 stroke sound, man, was that nice! I have too many freaking projects going on, plus flying man, not enough time not enough time.
THanks again

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Eftat: we have 4or5 1/3 spacewalkers here on the west coast of B.C. weight ranges between 22-26 lbs. All powered with q42, us 41 all fly exactly the same, 26lbs is no big deal for this airplane. All are covered with coverite and painted with auto paint. and they have all been around for years. I liked mine so much I built a 1/2 size. flies just the same, 71 lbs,3W200. also on floats.
Cheers, Dave.

Thanks guys for your replies.
My Spacwalker is now almost finished 22,9 lbs, empty. I'am just waiting on the pilot :-) And next week up to the air.
Here are some pics.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Absolutely gorgeous my friend. I have one waiting to be built and if it turns out as good as yours I will be very happy. The engine is perfect for it, I was thinking of an OS 4 cly. for mine but I like the way the 2 cly. heads stick out farther. Guys, I have started up again on the Spacewalker. Since I started working on this plane I have put together three ARFs. One still has a little bit of work.
Eftat, tell us how did she fly? Do you have pictures?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
OK; I've got the bug now!! Looking to build a 1/3 on floats, any recommendations for engine?? Thinking gas, I've heard good things about a G38, a G45, right on through to a G-62. Might add smoke. How much cowl chopping is required for the zenoah's?? Maybe I'll go with a Fuji EI.... I'd like ample power to loop from level, but not so much power that the plane loses it's character.
thanks

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Had a G38 in mine and it would fly better than scale. It would loop from level flight. G45 would give more vertical and not be too crazy and out of the scale envelope. The G62 is a bit much, unless you are going to do aerotow, you might want the extra power. If you want to keep the cowl clean and not have to cut holes in it you could put a ZDZ 40 with rear intake and exhaust in it.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
Thanks Anthony
I'll probably go for something like a ZDZ 40 or 3W42i, or perhaps the 300 twin spoken so highly of in this thread. By the time I buy an exhaust for the gas burners the initial cost spread gets smaller and the sound of the four stroke might make up for the fuel costs.... Plus it just looks so cool!! AND I happen to have a twin glow driver hanging around... Off a Saito 182 twin that I could sell to fund the new twin.... Yes, my thinking is all over the map but that's the fun part of planning a project like this. What size tank are you guys using with the 300 twin?? duration?? nitro percent recommendation?
I'm guessing the 300 is enough for floats based on comments about this engine/plane combo. Planning on the BUSA 1/3 scale EDO float kit. Finish likely Coverall & PPG paints; have worked well so far.

Hi
Finally decided to purchase this beautyful kit.
Waiting for it's arrival.
Currently, I've a ZDZ40 engine, but will try to change it for something between 60-80ccm to make it towing tug.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I'm about to get the Spacewalker kit as a Christmas present to myself and am hoping to fit my 3W48 twin. Has anybody done this yet and if so how did you fit the mufflers or canisters - smoke would be nice as well.

Good luck with your kit. You will love this plane. I have to get off of my butt and finish mine. I have been busy with other projects and have put this one on the back burner. I will finish up two projects I have going now and work on the Spacewalker this winter. I want to have it ready for spring.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I've received mine a month ago and just have started a tail.
O man! What a great kit. There's almost everything
It will be powered by ZDZ 60. Should have enough power for a sailplane tow.

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
I read where you have a 1/3 spacewalker or did have. I have had mine for several years with a 41 u.s in it but due to bad engines it has been 2 or 3 years since I have flown it and cannot remember what pitch prop I was using. I tried a 18x6 but it will not get the 21 lb. crate going fast enough. It seems it was a 18 x10 . I have an 18x12 to try and also the 10. I am getting 7500 rpms on the 18x 6. What are you using?

RE: Sig 1/3 Spacewalker
could you find out what sixe props these guys are using in their 41 us ? I could sure use some advice. An 18x6 will not do it so they must be using a 8 or 10 or even a 12 pitch. Any help will be great.
