Here is a question I want opinions on.

I picked up a Pete-n-Paul today that needs a radio and an engine (after I fix the rudder I stepped on ). The radio is fairly simple, but the "specified" engine is a .35. Now that bird is not older than the hills, but I cannot remember when the last time I even SAW a new .35 for RC.

Here is the question. Do you think my Saito .30 would be enough power? I am pretty sure I used to turn a 9x6 around 9000 when it was on my H.O.B. AT-6. Since that bird is really broken bad (trees are never easy on balsa at speed) I am thinking about moving the engine.

Can you post a picture jim or do you mean the pete n poke?

I have a saito 30 in a PHEONIX RAINBOW about 65" wingspan and fairly light.The 30 will go vertical on that.You should be using a 10x6 on it and from memory on the bench i was getting over 10000,it was ripping the prop tips.For such a little engine it's performance is amazing.

hmm...going to have to check the plans again for the correct name because I am confused. Yesterday was a long and hard day, and I am supposed to be retired.

The box says ".35 RC" for engine, but it does look vaguely like what Hobbsy posted except 2 seat. It belonged to a friend who moved on to softer runways last summer.

Evolution made a 36 two stroke that is supposed to be a good engine. I have one that I got in a deal but haven't run it yet. Evolution changed the lineup to include a 40 and discontinued the 36. If it were for myself I would prefer a 4 stroke.

Jim, that one is called the Pietenpol Camper, I don't know the model of the two holer.

I just ran my Saito .30 for a good 45 minutes with two different props. With an audience of about 300, the fans span the entire 35 acre field. I couldn't get the whole field in the viewer./

Saito .30, "A" designation on the right lug.
Fuel==WildCat 15% with 18% 80/20 blend.
Plug==Taipan 4C
Exhaust==Stock
Prop==Graupner 10x5.5
Valve lash==@ .0039"
Rpm==10,245
Idle as in picture.
With a Bolly 10.5x5 the rpm was 10,035. No picture, the camera memory is full. (Corrected prop size)

I would agree. Both the Pietenpol and the Pete 'n' Poke are prime candidates for 4-stroke engines.

Thanks Barry, I'll have to gaze upon that Bolly and see.

OK, Barry, you have it exactly right, also, I have four of the 10.5x5's and one 10.5x6. If I can find an 11.5x6 I'll try it on my old FA .40.

In additon to using an Australian glow plug and an Australian prop, I was wearing my Kangaroo hide boots.

Hobbsy, it's a little warmer down there in Australia right now!!!

I am waiting for a warm-up to break-in my new Saito 91S. I might ask you for your break-in procedure or in which previous post it is located.

H-Man, its pretty easy

10 minutes at 4,000 rpm with throttle at 1/4 to 1/3
10 minutes at 5,000
10 minutes at 6,000, probably need to top off the tank about here
10 minutes at 7,000 with brief runs to full throttle
Set LS needle as low as possible with HS at full peak. Go fly

You will note that during each 10 minute run that the rpm will slowly increase, I just let it go, the 5,000 rpm run will show the greatest gain. You know I'm going to get busted for this. I consider it a compliment

PS, if it is too wet and smoky on any 10 minute period, just lean it a couple of clicks to make it smooth but still rich.

Dave that hot weather the pope mentions was over here last weekend 44/45C,you coulda slowroasted a duck on the tin roof here.Your fans look like what we call 'mounties' here,if you shoot and cook one you'll need a chainsaw to carve it.Please use castrol r in the saw.

Those figures you got with the 30 seem pretty good.I was running an os f plug with a 10x6 mas series 2 q tip and 20% nitro 15% syn/castor.From memory i got 10600 steady.

Jim did you find out what .35 aeroplane you have?

You're welcome HS

Our weather here has been crazy, last week we had 55f one day and 5f the next morning. Pete, I always throw about one ounce of castor into the chain saw gallon when I mix it. An ole dirt biker wouldn't leave home without it.

PS, the idle on the .30 was 2,200 when the Bolly was mounted. It's hard to get it below 3,000 with a wood prop.

Is there a cool down period like that used for magnums?

Yes, the box says it is a 65 inch three channel Peitenpol by HoB and need a .19 to .35 engine.

Since I really do enjoy playing games with 3 channel birds (it really gets the 'big' guys when I can do things they insist I cannot) it will be 2nd or 3rd down on the repair list. First is the AJ Slick Edge...

Thanks

Jim, I had a note to myself to give you a number. I found where you were originally #806, so nevermind. Who was the other guy who needed a number?

Dave, you have a good system for breaking in a Saito and there's always more than one way to skin a cat. I've always done mine the same way except for wide open runs beginning on the second tank (second 10 minute run) and maybe varying the base rpms some up or down.

ACD, there is noting in the construction of a Saito that would benefit from heating and cooling cycles.. Saito does not suggest one so I never did it.

Barry. I stick to my method because it's easy to keep track of and when I'm done I can forget about it.

I just ran my old FA .40 for about an hour.

FA .40
Fuel===WildCat 15% with 18 % 80/20 blend
Plug===Enya black A-3
Exhaust=TurboHeader, I don't have a stock exhaust for it other than for a .50
Prop===Bolly 11.5x5
RPM===10,660
Idle 2,150, when idle at best, midrange was wet, when midrange was clean, no idle below 2,400.

Dave, I've had 2 Saitos that put this break in process to the test in my mind. One is a 125 that I thought would never break in, but it finally smoothed out after I had a lot of doubts about the thing. A real late bloomer. The other is one of the first batches of 82's. It was so smooth I think it was ready to fly after 10 minutes.

BLW, how much time on your 125 until you were happy with it?

John
