Default RE: WACO YMF

I successfully flew the Waco a couple more times today. I have now taken all the weight out of the nose (10.5oz!) so God knows where the CG is now situated. However, she STILL flew with the need of a little up trim. I dialed in some sub trim as my regular digital trim wasn't enough along with 30% expo and she flew quite well. The motor adjustments were successful as well, giving me a nice transition between low and high speed throttle. Generally the flying attitude looked good but she sort of skidded around the corners which may be corrected by introducing a little rudder.

Also I must use the advice given me by stickbuilder and add some differential to the ailerons. This will probably help correct the odd aileron behaviour. So I removed the "y harness" and soldered separate leads for the two aileron servos. I have a JR 8103DT and I'm using an AR7000 2.4G receiver. I plugged the right aileron into Ail and the left into Aux 2. Then I changed the wing to Flaperon but from there on I was lost. Everyting was haywire and the ailerons were mile out of adjustment. An hour reading the manual served only to confuse me more. HELP!! I'm told it's a simple thing to set up but it seems it is beyond the grasp of my simple brain. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I have a chap coming out tomorrow with a quality movie camera to take some viewable movies.

Thanks!!

Jim,

Can you adjust the incidence of yout horizontal stab? If not, you might want to fine tune the wing incidence. Try making the wing incidence 1/2 degree more toward the negative. How about your engine thrust line? Does this trim problem occur at all throttle settings, or only at high throttle, or low?

Bill - Not ignoring your advise but just waiting for the weather. My stab is not adjustable. My lower wing is "about' 0 degrees and the upper is "about' -1 degree. The engine thrust line should be dead on as I carefully measured it during the building stage. The rest will have to wait until I get her back in the air. Thanks for the advise!

Hi oldflyer123.

Send me your mailing address and I'll have my wife copy the Dave Platt Models "Building & Flying the WACO F-3" 1/6 th scale kit instruction booklet for you. Has 16 pages and is in nice shape so should make for a nice copy. And the best part...No Charge! Let me know if you want this information sent to you.

Soft landings.

Hey, Rick...email incoming to you.

BTW: oldflyer123 has offered to take the WACO copy I send him and put it in pdf format so those interested can download it as an aid to building. Thanks, Ron! Watch for it in the near future if you are interested.

Soft landings.

Joe, Oldflyer,

The PICA Short 17 page manual (revised) and the PICA Long 45 page manual (unrevised) can both be found in PDF format on the House of Moy website http://www.houseofmoy.com/waco/ that supplements this site. The revised Short manual has most of the suggested modifications for strengthening the airframe (wing joiners), different engine mounting methods, moving the tail wheel to the scale position and more. There is also an index on page 1 of this site, just click on the post number and you will be taken to that post.

Both manuals are for the 1/5th scale YMF and except for some dimensions is equally applicable to the 1/6th scale YMF.

As the Dave Platt YMF kits and plans were aquired by PICA back in the late 1970s or early 1980s, the manuals should be nearly identical. The plans are the same except for some minor differences in layout and a couple of details. Dave Platt also listed what equipment he actually used in developing the original Waco kit.

Hi Guys,
My 33% Kit is scheduled to arrive tomorrow and building will start 5 minutes later I will be doing a build thread in the scale plane forum, please stop in and check out the build and offer advice where needed. I am really looking forward to the build and the thread will help keep me motivated on the project. Here is the link to the build. John/Ken,
I did get a reply back from Andy, he said tail #14132 is in the hangar at the local airport and it is totally disassembled and unrecognizable as a YMF-5 in it's present conditon, on the other hand he said to give him a few days and he can get me the exact color of blue as well as all the details down to the instruments and the interior color of the plane as it was supplied from the factory. As you can see in the pic that Ken posted there are some interesting detail on this Waco like the exhaust stacks and what appears to be a generator mounted to the bottom of the fuse below the bottom wing. I also like the nav lights on the wing tips and the fin, it really sets the plane apart from the new Waco Classics.
Thanks!!
Anthony

Tom,

Like Anthony said, very good shots of Waco N919TT in flight. Go to Waco Classic Aircraft http://www.wacoclassic.com/ and look in the photo album for 3 pictures of the real 2006 N919TT, s/n F5C111, based in Newport Coast, CA.

Also Waco Classic has started a Blog site for Waco Owners and Enthusiast and are considering making a Waco YMF-5D (Super Duper) with increased power (300hp Jacobs A2), a better windscreen or possibly a canopy, a tapered tip prop as standard with a constant speed 3 blade optional prop along with some other changes (internal) that would not affect the modeling aspect of the Waco. See the Blog for more info (not much but it is a start).

Would it come as a surprise to anyone that the Pica Waco YMF-5 uses 384 pieces of thread to replicate the rib stitching on the horizontal stab? (Puff...Puff) You don't even breathe in the direction of the pile of 1/8" long thread pieces, or they will be all over the shop. It's not too bad once you get into the cadence of the thing. Dab dope, pick up a thread with the brush tip, place it on the rib, and square it up. Next piece. [8D]

Hey Bill, does that go something like:

384 pieces of thread in a bowl [X(]
384 pieces of thread
Dab one down, Slide it around [>:]
And now there’s 383 ……

Seriously that's a lot of work to do like that. However, I am quite sure that it looks great knowing what little I do about your craftsmanship.
