I'm in a bit of a rut over here. Two days now I've spent just looking at it and wondering why I haven't got anything done. The only two things I managed to do in the last couple of days was to make up a couple hundred rivets, and build a jig for the wing tips, which I'm waiting on the first one to dry so I can see how it looks. Does this happen to anyone else? There's so much to do, and I just stare at it.

Know what that's like. In the last week I was able to fab and paint up a new windshield, simulated cover for the front 'pit and a removable stand for the pilot bust in the cockpit to give better access to the switches and remote glow. Next up are better rigs for the interplane strut attachments.

Really hard to push a project when it's below 0F, there's several feet of snow out the window with more on the way!

Well, there are probably as many building styles as there are builders. For most of my building years I worked at a fever pitch (building for 45 years now).
A few years back I developed the place of mind to walk away from it and enjoy other parts of life and come back to it when the need/desire hits me. Also, time away can give you opportunity to see other design ideas or choices that will escape you if your always focused on it.

Anyway yah, my projects used to dictate to me my sense of accomplishment or guilt me out because I was not doing enough. Now when that happens I just say, tough s*it, you just sit there until I'm good and ready.
I guess I could say my hobby used to run me, now I run my hobby.

Yeah, one's creative energy ebbs and flows. I keep a number of projects going, but just 1 model. Wherever and whenever I feel inspired, it's less like a chore if I go with the flow. And it gives me time to "sleep on it".

Hello all,
The decision for the shirt color has been made by you the voters and yellow had the most votes.
So looks like yellow will be the color for our new shirts. There are a few more details to work out
then off to the printer for a final cost. Steve or myself will keep you up to date on cost and how to
order your new shirts.

Well, I've taken a few days off from the Waco as not to burn myself out with it. Plus, I have a couple of other projects to complete. I did, however make a bit of progress this morning on it. I got the wing/fuse fairings roughed in, and ordered the cowl and pants from FS. As for the fairings, I have a question. Right now, there on there, and if started to fill in with balsa filler then started wondering if that's such a good idea. Can I apply resin and micro balloons over balsa rite?or is there a better way? I also got the luggage hatch built and built a locking mechanism for it, just needs to be hinged now but I'm waiting till I cut the aileron hinges to see if I have enough piano hinge left or if I'll just make a piano hinge for it. Thoughts please?

Hello all,
Now that we have decided on the color for the new shirts (yellow) I need to get an accurate count to keep the cost down. So far the count is just not enough. Now I’m asking every one to PM me with a count and size you will be committing to if we don’t get the count to at least (100) I don’t think it’s going to be doable so please PM me ASAP and lets get some new shirts.

With almost 250 brothers, I can't see us not getting to 100. At least I would think everyone would want at least one. I'm getting three or four of em.

I could use some advice. I just picked up a built proctor 118" waco. It has some signifigant hangar rash around the tail. Both elevators were up against something in storage and got warped about 3/4" "up" at the trailing edge. Im thinking of using a syringe to distribute moisture under the painted fabric covering, then gradually pressing them between two flat surfaces. It's a darn shame. Also, the tailwheel seems to be locked 180 degrees from where it should be. It was probably forced into that position years ago in someones basement. Do any of you have good pics of the installed tail wheel assembly? I went over the blue prints but couldn't find anything useful.

Thanks in advance-

Cody

Well Cody,

Knocked around or stressed in storage?
Here is something to consider that is not easy for me to say to you, because it may be distressing.
Unless you know the builder and the history of the plane very, very well, or have seen its last flight before taking posession, you may very well own an accident waiting to happen.
I have bought several large used planes in the last few years and was shocked at what I found when I stripped all the covering off. Everyone of them needed internal structural repair or reinforcement.
I was happy I did strip them down, fix the stuff, and recover them. It gave me confidence that all my money and work was not going to end up as a scrap pile of wood.
Since our planes are so big and heavy, we almost need to have the same safety concerns as a full scale plane.
Anyway, I may just be overly careful.

I appreciate your concern. All the servos and electronics are going to be replaced. Most are old hitec servos with red labels. I've been flying for 30 years and never had hitec servos with red labels. As for the condition, I can only guess the plane was built in the 80's. The builder flew it a few times and passed away. After that it changed posession at least once. Now that it is mine I plan on freshening it ip, and giving it the life it neverhad. I've got a nib amr kit in the closet, this plane is supposed to tide me over until I get a bigger house with the missus and have room to build. I know it's old and brittle, but it's a shame just to let it sit as a museum piece.

In any case, I am glad to have it, and will be going through it the best I can before I fly it.

Looking forward to it. Have you thought about stripping it down to the bones and re-finishing it?

I just can't imagine that working satisfactorily. Why not just build new elevators?

Most of the reason I bought this plane was to fly it, not create another major project. The covering is in good shape overall, and recovering it would be a shame. I just picked it up in Idaho 2 fays ago, and now we're on vacation in Seattle. Next week we'll be on our way back to Denver.

Is the Waco brotherhood no longer accepting new members? I know that Cougar429 has asked quite a few times with no response. I feel kind of bad as I pushed him to ask again figuring that maybe bill just didn't see his last request. C'mon guys, let's get those PM's in for the shirt orders, and please be sure it's in a PM, and not just in the thread .
