Zenoah 23 /GP WACO combination
The engine I selected for for GP WACO is a zenoah 23. After reading this thread I am having second thoughts on this engine. Anyone please share your thoughts and advice on the Zenoah 23 for this airframe.

If you mean the G26 that engine should fly the GP Waco fine. I think some guys are also using the DLE 30 as well. I stepped up to a G38 on mine but she weighed in over 20 LBS to.

It's a G23 which is also a magneto very similar to the G26 with about 800 less rpm range. I have a G26 in my 1/4 scale taylorcraft and
li love it . I picked up a NIB G23 that is no longer made but I hear good things about it similar to the G26. I am thinking of adding a smoke unit so I am concerned that the engine may not perform with the added weight. 20lbs seems very heavyl

I fly my GP Waco with a G-23, 15-8 Master Airscrew and a B & B straight pipe and love it! With this set up you have to fly the airplane, build up speed in shallow dives to do aerobatics. If you want more hp, the dle 30/35 route. I just love flying my old and loud yellow crate around doing scale type aerobatics. Smoke would make it a killer flyer!

Finally did a weight a balance on the 1/5 Pica. Comes out a hair shy of 13 lbs sans cowl. Saito 125a should pull it along fine. Just not sure if will be honking in vertical.

Where do you stand with a number count for T shirts? Does it look like we'll be wearing new shirts for the summer fly ins?

The count is up to 60 now I don't think it will get any higher but hopefully still doable. As soon as Bill gets the art work it will be sent to Steve so he can take it to his printer for a final cost. If all is good I will send out PMs to every one with introductions on how to pay for there order and hopefully we will be wearing our new shirts shortly after. If you don't see your name on the list PM me with how many and what size so I can add your name to the list.

How did that 20 lb Waco fly? Mine weighs about 17 lbs with a Gimini 1.60 and I'm a little concerned about the maiden flight.

Here's the video of the maiden flight. I had a Zenoha G26 in it at the time but I jumped up to a G38 and I like it much better now.

Mine flies (at 17.5lbs) with an RCGF 26cc very well. With the ratings on that Gemini you will be just fine, no 3D'er, but a little better than scale powered flight.

My buddy just slapped a DLE-35ra on his GP waco- it has pretty much unlimited vertical now. Losing 2lbs made a HUGE difference in the way the plane flies!

Waco YMF Barth 1/3
Started covering Barth YMF with Solartex neutral. Going on well. Other photo is old Pepino 1/4 YMF covered with Ultracoat. Much easier but I think the Barth is worth the extra effort. This time my plan with Solartex is to seal it and paint with automotive paint. I have a relative skilled in automotive painting and he asked me what to use to seal it? I don't want to turn this into a thread on paint, but would welcome suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike Hopkins

Mike,
The Solartex does not need sealing or having the weave filled like Koveral, On the places you want to look like metal, you can fill the weave with water based poly urethane.
then with high build automotive primer, just spray the paint over the open bays. Primer will crack.

Do I understand that the parts I want to look like metal are filled with water based polyurethane then high build automotive primer then painted? The rest of plane gets automotive paint right over the Solartex with no primer? Or does something go on before paint? I know nothing about painting. Hate to be so dumb.
Thanks,

Mike,
No such thing as a dumb question. You are correct, fill, sand, prime over the area to represent metal. Wipe the model down with the appropriate material (I used acetone)
to remove grease dirt etc. then spray the paint.

"I'm preparing to paint my next plane,,,(not a Waco, a Widgeon) and my practice work was to repaint the doors on my old Morgan sports car.....came out very well (base/clear system)"
I actually found painting cars easier. They just sat there and behaved themselves while I painted. No turning it this way and that while trying to keep the gun at the right distance from the surface:-))))))))))))))
