Thanks Bill
I always appreciate prayers
Working on fixing getting the wife fixed up a bit. She refused to even see a doc until I got fixed up a bit.

Got 2 builds under way but not much progress, at this time. But will get them done this year.

Hey Bill! I don't know about everybody else but I've been out quite a bit lately with the planes (most all of them). Kinda, a case of making hay while the sun shines, I guess. Really, it's been sooooooo long since I actually was able to go out and fly that I'm making the most of it now.

Kadet's doing just fine, but I expected nothing less really. I re-positioned the servo arm for the elevator to get more "down" on it - trim was full forward and she still wanted to climb at 3/4 power. It's much better now, but I might still move the arm one more space before Spring's over - ya never know.

I know what you mean about the Kadet arriving quickly. Mine was here in just 4 days and I had it in the shop that same afternoon. Yeah, it's just like Christmas when a new kit arrives. Hey, please feel completely free to chronicle your build here. I, for one, would completely welcome seeing another Kadet go together.

I'm thinking if you have a noticable down elevator at neutral setting you may want to check the CG or add a couple degrees of down thrust to the engine. I'm thinking these planes like level flight about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, and any more they do climb.

You got it! I am covering the Goldberg Eaglet. And will start build in short order. Excited about it! I am out flying as much as I can also. When its extreme cold or hot... I like the shop. Heat's not as fun as it used to be. A bit early but can't decide if I'm using the OS 40 or the Saito 65. Probably set up for both and use the Saito until the cub is built. Or sell the OS and buy a new k&B Sportster 40american kit needs an american Engine IMHO. The OS was a freebie. Years ago.

Actually, my issues were quite simple, and not at all unusual for me - first is that I just originally set the elevator servo arm at the wrong point, pretty sure. As it sits right now (one setting forward from where it was originally) she's flying much more like she should (which translates to "I LIKE IT!"). Before I moved the arm, with trim set in the center the elevator was actually just a little bit up. Now with the trim centered the elevator is just the tiniest bit down, and that's with a ruler laying on it. CG is right at the rear-most recommended spot - 3 1/8" from LE.

You're right though, about the engine. It was nearly parallel to the centerline of the plane so I added in a couple degrees of down thrust when I got her home. Forgot to mention that originally. I should have known about that issue (and the elevator thing too) immediately on the very first take-off - I originally posted a pic on Don's build thread ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/kit-...i-build-7.html ) of her when she was about 6' past me on the first roll-up. Nose-wheel was already in the air when she'd only rolled about 20-25 feet total. Didn't think about what that meant at the time.

Turning to first take-off - Just past me on first T/O roll - Close-up on pic-2
Nose wheel is in the air already and elevator hasn't been touched yet.

Latest flight is perfect - all trims centered and she slow-rolls in a near straight line.

Love it!

I did some tweaking on my LT-40 on Sunday, was going to swap out the 11x7 APC for a 12X8 wood prop, but forgot to balance the prop so when I ran up the engine I saw a noticeable shudder in the nose cone, so pulled it back off and put the APC back on. I did need to adjust the low speed a hair out, now the OS52 runs smoothly throughout the range where it had a slight stumble going from idle to full. I moved my rudder link in one hole, which increased its snap roll rate, but it still sticks a bit, can tell when on level flight it starts to roll and tapping rudder into the roll stops it. Guess I should really take that link apart and correct the bind.

On take off, the tail is up in a few feet, rolls nice and level until I tap up elevator then she climbs straight up. I have it trimmed slight nose down at half throttle, above that and she climbs, which makes inverted flights easier to hold. Still doing it 4 mistakes high so not getting the right perspective on the flight to do perfect flat turns. Since it was my second time out this year, the aerobatics were LAME, but since I was the only one out to the field(and it was a great day for it), no one noticed but me.

Best part, no oh S*** instances.

I think its time I get my daughter started too, she is old enough now that I hope she will listen and learn. I just have to figure out if I can buddy box my DX8 with my Futaba 8FGS, If not then ny DX8 with my JR 12X and use the Apprentice.

Great! Maybe one day those girls can teach the boys a thing or two? I think the health of the hobby is dependent on the next generation both boys and girls.

That makes it a perfect flying day in my book. I like that "4 mistakes high" - that's where I tend to fly the most lately, especially this year for some reason. Guess age and almost no flying last year makes it that way.

Yeah! And the first sign of a REAL INSTRUCTOR is saving the airplane! The most difficult part of teaching used to be the decision that 'he is not listening or connecting what I am saying with what the airplane is doing and it is time for ME to take it'. As I got more comfortable with 1) my skills 2) different airframes and 3) different radio systems the time got later and later. Thankfully I have managed to avoid having a student break an airplane while on the buddy box. In fact (from my observation and emails from former students) most of mine tend to break less airframes than many.

Teaching kids is ALWAYS fun.

That is truly the sign of a good instructor. So when do I report?

I love engines, but not the K&B Sportster engines, they are the worst engines K&B ever made, useless for powering a plane and too light for a boat anchor.

Really? I love my .65 Sportster. Yes, it's not a screaming power house, but simple and reliable. It's out lived many planes, including a Kadet SR, and always ran well.

HAHA! I'm in the same boat. My 7 year old daughter has become insistent that we build her an airplane and I teach her how to fly it. Her hands just aren't big enough to hold a transmitter yet, so I think I'll start her off on an electric C/L and eliminate the possibility of a fly away. But first I have to remember how to fly C/L, haven't touched one in 25 years. Maybe next summer I can move her up to a Kadet.

I think her hands can work a DX8 now, but not the 12X, I have trouble with the 12x reaching some switches while keeping fingers on the stick. I think the Apprentice will do well for her since its light, and slow and is hard to get into trouble with(as long as barns don't jump in front of it). Once she gets the hang of it, I will switch her up to the LT-40. That one is too fast and agile to learn with and can easily get into trouble with since I have high throws on the tail.

Don't worry it is like riding a bike Ya don't forget
It had been close to years for me, and my first return flight was on a plane that hunted all over the sky. Swivel links both ends on a bell crank that has the wobbles. I kept from the ground nicely.

Wonder if any one has ever flown a Kadet as CL?

So you're the guy that got the good one.

I had a .20, and a .65 neither ran well. I had bought a 1.00, but sold it, never ran it because the others where so bad. I thought the idea of them was cool, but I thought it was cool when Chevy did the same thing with the Vega motors, that didn't work out well either.

Fortunately... never lost a plane to a student .. but yes... close a few times. Never used the buddy box... just old school pass it back.
I guess I have been lucky too. The K&B as always been a smooth reliable engine. I do run a gallon of 10% through them slobbering rich for the first 1/2 gallon then still rich for the second half. Then start tweaking. Long slow run in. but pays off in a tick tock idle. Actually the K&B's run in like that have been the MOST reliable 2 strokes I have ever owned.
Ohh.. Allison is 12 now and on the NextStar Sim. Have the plane but she hasnt flown it. She IS flying the Blade 120SR copter on a DX6i though. Now moving to the MCPx collective pitch. So hopefully she will get it quick. Mainly orientation is what takes a while for most.. including her. or Me
