Well, since my weather event a few more storm systems have come thru. Another 3-4 inches of rain dumped on the ground and I'm losing the count. The forecast for the next week and a half is just sunshine. So things will dry out and I'll be able to work on outside projects.

Pork Chop my prayers are with you and all in that drought stricken area. We had a drought a few years back and that was no fun either. I was worried I would run out of well water. Even out in the country we were advised to conserve water.

I've started installing the radio gear in the LT-40. However, with the good weather, the LT-40 build will slow drastically.

That is a great idea. It would be more important than the oil pipelines proposed. Get 'er done!

Boy we sure could use the water Mike. It would one insanely big pipe line.
I have drove by several of the lakes and reservoirs, and just looking at them you can see the old water line and then way down below is the puddle of water remaining. Well maybe more than puddles. If you half tried you could still drown in them.

Hi all, here's my Seniorita. It's built from scratch and runs a Saito .30 four stroke. I scanned the plans, drew the plywood formers by cad and cnc cut them. Landing gears are laminated fiberglass. Covered to the senior sport theme using oracover. Certainly one of my favourite builds so far!

Really nice plane, and I love that cross-bracing on the landing gear - masterful job! That pic could easily be an advertisement too - nicely done.

Since you have the CNC setup for the formers (do you have the ribs setup for CNC also?) have you considered making a short kit of the formers and ribs available to others? I would be very interested as I suspect would others. Thank for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Richard

I'll add my voice too. Especially like the landing gear, I've never thought to use fiberglass and you have inspired some thoughts. Beautiful job!!

I have the cad files and CNC setups (g-codes) for all the plywood parts, haven't drawn the ribs yet. I used the plan as a background picture and drew the parts that way. It wouldn't take long to do the same for the ribs. I actually considered a short kit a while ago but that would call for a proper laser cutter then...and some more free time.

Thought I'd post an update photo. Today I was checking the wing to horizontal stabilizer alignment. I slapped on the vertical stabilizer/rudder and snapped this picture. I'm ready to start covering the fuselage. The Model will be a tail dragger so I have been giving thought as to how to do the tail wheel. A few days ago a search on the web I found a nice wire bender. I said to myself I can make one of those and so I did. Pictured are the first bends I made with this thing. The strut bends are made using plastic coated coat hanger wire 1/8". The other wire is 3/16" steel. I think my tail wheel worry is over. I made it so it can handle 1/4" wire. There is a low wing model I am researching that calls for 1/4" wire.

LT-40 still going strong, flew in 15 MPH winds the other day like they weren't there! WOOT. Flew the T-clips after that, and it isn't bothered by it either.

I think you better look for some wire at your hobby shop known as music wire. It is much stronger than what you are trying to use, it will be harder to bend but has been used for landing gear for ever. Good luck; Harold

acdii that is great. Winds here die down in summer and pick up in winter. This will give me time to get back into flying before the winds come. Flying that is if the rain ever stops here in Texas.

Jersy Hank. Thanks for that advice. I should have pointed out these were practice bends. Better to ruin coat hanger wire than music wire. I plan to use 3/32 music wire for my tail wheel. The 3/16 steel piece is just scrap I had in the shop.

Or heat it glowing red, then plunge it into water or oil. That will make it too hard, so the you reheat it until it gets straw colored, then let it cool slowly.

Hi Folks

Since I originally posted in this thread about my experiences with my Kadet Senior Sport, I have bought an LT40 kit and after seeing how long it takes to build one, an LT40 ARF.

I did a few buddy box sessions with the LT40 ARF (OS 46AXII powered), including some takeoffs and landings. I figured I was ready to solo it, so I went out to our club field on a Monday when there was nobody there but me. I prepped it, started it, checked the controls, and carried it and the transmitter out to the taxi apron. Set it down, and it was slowly idling away from me.

Lined it up on the runway (our club uses a 400'x36' runway for the land owner's Luscombes), applied power and did a good take off. Not perfect, but got 'er up there. Flew around in the pattern as my instructor and I had done many times, then started lowering the pattern. On one of the approaches I said to myself "Self, this one looks good, let's land it", and I really greased it in. I was so happy, and so proud of myself for doing it!

I took a five minute break and did it again. That was the end of the day for me though, because I had forgotten to check my gallon fuel can and only had enough fuel for about 2/3 of a tank in the LT40... didn't want to risk a third flight that day.

Since then (only less than a week ago) I have done about 15 successful takeoffs and landings without the buddy box. I am still working on consistency and controlling my approach path so I can do smooth landings, but I will keep practicing and I will get it. No crashes, just a few kinda ugly landings.

The Kadet Senior ARF:

Here is the LT-40 kit build just getting started:

I am actually much farther along on the LT40 kit build at this point. The wings, fuselage, horizontal and vertical stabilizers are all done. I have started the covering. I am using SIG Koverall with Stix-It. One of the guys in our club who has been building since 1949 gave me a great lesson on covering. The wing is covered and tightened up, and has three coats of Minwax PolyCrylic on it. Next will be a coat of a hybrid latex as the undercoating. The top coat will be Stits PolyTone. I am doing the colors as a tribute to my Blue & Gold Macaw "Chico", so the underside will be Cub Yellow, and the top surfaces will be Bahama Blue. We are going to spray it so we will try to do a blend along the edges where they meet up.

May turn out ugly, may look good. But it will be my first ever kit, and it WILL be dedicated to Chico.

Oh, and if there are any left, may I have a brotherhood number please?

Hey Michael! First, CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR SUCCESSFUL SOLOS!!!!! It's always a bit of a nail-biter, that first solo, but you breezed through it just fine. Nicely done.

And remember, any landing you can walk away from...

For sure, for sure, there's a number just waiting for you - welcome to the SIG KadetBrotherhood at last!! Gotcha logged with #186.

Your LT40's gonna be just fine - it's a SIG kit, can't come out anything other than great. BUT, I wanna see pics when she's done.

Hey all y'all, here's the SIG KadetBrotherhood, as I've got it today:

Progress! Got around to doing the covering on the horizontal stabilizer and it came out great.

However, if I had known what a pain it is to cover with Koverall I think I'd have gone with MonoKote instead. I think the finished product will be nice, but man, what a labor-intensive and expensive process to use this stuff.

Koverall itself is cheap, but Stix-It is expensive, the thinner is expensive, the PolyCrylic is expensive, dunno what the primer is gonna cost yet, but I am also into this for two quarts of PolyTone at almost fifty bucks a quart including tax and shipping.

Next time, MonoKote or SolarTex for me.

In the below picture, the wing already has the three coats of PolyCrylic, the horizontal stabilizer is bare Koverall. And yes, I know the stab should face the other way. ;-)

There are much less expensive alternatives to Polycrylic for finishing Koveral or dress liner or Solartex or non spec glider polyester. Search for covering with fabric here on RCU for many threads (polyester threads heh-heh) I have finished polyester dress lining with hardware store water base acrylic to good effect.

Sincerely, Richard
