Hey lightning rod!! Good to see you here. You're just behind me - my original first edition 3-ch Kadet first flew in 74. Just retired it a couple years ago when I built my Mk-II. Kinda miss flying it sometimes.

Thank you skylark-flier, that's a pretty nice compliment wanting to put a picture of my plane in that group and yes you can, it would be an honor.

When I built that I never wanted one that looked like all the others, I saw a lot more in that plane. The idea of the fuselage came from the Ryan STA and there really wasn't much to change on the original frame work to sheet it and add the head rest, cockpit is in the original rear place and it's got the spacewalker cowling. Wing has a fixed center section with tube mounted wings, tail group is straight from the plans.

Plane has won first place in it's first showing at a scale fly-in as best civilian plane, everyone loved this plane and said it's nice to see work like that for a change. It flies just like all the other spacewalkers, great.

Thanks again,

Leroy

Wow! That really is a great-looking Spacewalker! I had a 1/3 scale that I flew for years with a Zenoah G-62 up front. I regret to say that I sold it, and it was crashed soon after...sad. Back to the thread: Has anyone had a scaled-up Kadet Senior? I have one that's been beefed up a little, and flies with an O.S. 120 Surpass on the nose. It has a cowl, flaps, 80 inch wingspan, built as a tail dragger, wheel pants, and wing struts. It's a great flyer, but I'd like one bigger! I saw one at a fly in years ago, but couldn't find the owner! I also saw on E-bay that someone is selling plans enlarged by 200%. I was wondering if any of the Brothers here had ever built a really big one, and if so, how did it fly, and what engine was used? I'd like to have one big enough for a G-62 or GT-80. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Never seen Kadet Senior with anything that big but I think it would be cool.
I've seen quite a few of the giant scale Telemaster's with G-62's and the Super Flying Kings with everything from G-62's to 3W 150's

Skylark-flier thank you it looks real good there, I can only hope it inspires others to alter some of these kits, there is often more to them than the picture on the box that so many follow. The spacewalker has a lot of character as is and some refinement can and does add a lot more to it for the builder and others who see it.

Thank you,
Leroy

I had a twelve foot wingspan giant Telemaster at one time, too, but it didn't fly quite as well as I had hoped. (under powered) I sold it before I had a big enough engine to power it well. The new owner put a G-62 on it and loved it! The main reason I'd like a really big one is: I'd like to cover it in the same scheme as Claude's original photo on the kit box. (I'd have to make it a tail-dragger, though!) I've had Telemasters in all sizes, too. They all flew great, but I think the way a Kadet Senior with ailerons and a flatter wing flies better. Just my personal preference, I guess. I've heard that the Kadet Senior Sport ARF (Did I say ARF?) flies good, too, but I haven't seen one in person. Thanks for your comment rtn9105! Maybe it's my lack of eyesight, or just the fact that I think it would be cool, too! (or both!)

I have a question for the Brothers that have more building experience than I do. (that would be everybody, probably!) I'm kind of hung up on enlarging a Kadet Senior, and as I mentioned in an earlier post, I've seen 200% plans for sale, but I'm thinking about making the plane large enough to use a 1/3 scale Cub cowl, (without the molded engine) since they are similar in shape to a Kadet Senior cowl. I think those enlarged plans make the wing span around 156 inches, and a 1/3 scale Cub is 144 inches. Would scaling it up from stock, to a point where the wing span and fuselage would allow the Cub cowl to fit be the correct way to figure how much to enlarge the plans? I hope I'm not being too confusing, here! Any input or ideas would be GREAT! Thanks!

I found one that was for sale here on RCU back in 2014! Larry Busby was the seller, and said that the plans were doubled in size, resulting in the 156 inch wing span! It was 3 channel, and flown with a 50cc twin!

The Kadet Sport ARF is an excellent flyer. I'm on m second one (don't ask) I have also modified a Kadet Senior, kit built, to a tail dragger. I fly the ARF more than any other model in my fleet.

I completely understand you desire to build a large version of the Senior. Be aware of the fact that there is more to it than just enlarging the plans. The wood sizes do not extrapolate as the same rate as the size increase. By that I mean that if a piece of wood is 1/4" on the Kadet plans, you would not use 1/2" on a 200% version. There is no rule of thumb, or formula. This is the time when experience counts.

I would suggest that if the 200% plans are more than just an enlargement of the Kadet Senior plans, you purchase them.It should contain the needed wood sizes.

I understand your desire for a properly fitting cowl, but there things that are more important, to insure success. I suggest that you take advantage of other's experience, and buy those plans.

Hi SPACE COWBOY. If the cowl is a real big deal, ya can always make your own. Even a glass cowl is not hard to make. The lost foam method is easy, although time consuming. A class cowl is certainly easier and faster than scratching out a new plane.
But yeah a steroid sized Kadet is sure appealing.
The nose of the plane in my avatar is a lost foam method cowl, and my very first attempt at one.

Has anyone made removable tail feathers for a kadet or similar sized plane? Maybe the horizontal stab or and vert stab.
Inquiring minds want to know.

The only time I made any part of the tail removable ended up in a very entertaining flight. Had the removable all flying vert stab blow of a fast slope glider. Never want to repeat that. Ya did know that vert stabs perform a very useful function. I did get the bird down in 1 piece. It then became permanent.

Hi Skylark-Flier,

I was checking out your Sig History website and reminiscing a bit. I started flying RC I believe, when I was 9 in 1972. It was on a Falcon 56 my Dad built in the mid 60's. He flew control line in the 40's and primitive RC and reeds in the 50's and 60's. Before I soloed I wanted my own plane and built an original Sig Kadet. I thought it was the late winter of '73 but I'm not sure what year the Kadet was first introduced. I could be off a year. On your Sig history web site you have some of the years the kits came out but not the Kadet. I'm curious if you have the details. I'm tempted to call Sig just to get the details but thought I'd reach out to the Sig Historian.

I'm starting to build an original Kadet for my daughter. I fly giant scale warbirds and aerobatics but my daughter would rather have a plane to fly than just watch me all time. I'm going to make it as original to my plane as possible. Red and black scheme covered with silk and dope. I have an old Enya 29 for power and found some old smooth balloon Dubro wheels with the chromed hubs on eBay. I'll post some pictures of the build as we move along.

Thanks so much for keeping the Brotherhood alive.

Best Regards,

Bill

Thanks, Tom and Ken, for your valuable input! I'm not really a builder, even though I have gotten pretty good at repairing and modifying over the years! The plans advertised on the "bay" are pretty much just double-sized originals, no templates or anything else. I'd probably end up with a lumberyard of wood and plans, and sit around scratching my head, wondering what to do next! I guess I should just buy the Senior Sport and call it a day. I still like the idea, though!

Cowboy, let me throw a couple of thoughts at you:
1) Can your 200% Kadet be built? Answer is, in a nutshell, YES
2) What would it involve? As said above, this is where things get dicey. As said above, just doubling the size of the materials isn't the answer since there may not be the need to do so. For example, you wouldn't need to increase the thickness of the wing ribs, just double the number to keep the spacing as in the normal sized plans. The same thing would most likely apply to the rest of the aircraft. You might, however, find that sticking with 1/4" stick stock would not be strong enough though, for example, 3/8" might be plenty. Another option might be using 1/4" spruce instead of balsa and accept a slight weight penalty. Maybe, going another direction here, using light ply and making internal frames to attach the stick stock to, aft of the wing, might be the way to go. The only way to find out is to take the plans to a place they can be blow up, buy some wood and start building

I've had a few Seniors with removable tails. Generally two nylon bolts up front and one in back (small notch in bottom of rudder.. Then a good idea to have bracing from the bottom of the fuse to the bottom of the horiz.stab about quarter way out. then on top of the horiz. to partway up the vertical.
See ugly-ass photo. Never had one fly off or cause a problem. Easy to do.

Hey Tom, what wheels did you use on your yellow (Shell-Penn) Kadet?

Hey Bill! You're right - it probably was 1973 that you first started your Kadet. That's the year I built mine too. The original was "officially" released during the summer of 1972 but I don't think they had a real wide availability during that first summer. If you were to check the decal sheet that came with the kit you'd see the 1972 copyright, and the kit instructions (available on the history website) also have a 1972 date on them.

By the way, the date NOT being on the website was MY OVERSIGHT. It's there now. Thanks for reminding me.

With Mike Gretz gone, I'm afraid much of the "on site" knowledge of SIG is gone. I've been trying to find someone there with his knowledge and historic interest for awhile, without much luck. Guess we're pretty much on our own in that regard.

I'm with you on building a "new" original Kadet - been thinking about it for awhile now. Got most of the wood available, got the plans, got the time. Geez, my original engine (Enya .35 unmuffled) and radio (Kraft) are still in my old one. It might just happen this winter, once my Stratus is back on-line. I would advise you on one item though - the first Kadet was monokote-covered.

I want to correct you on one other item. I don't keep the SIG and SIG Kadet Brotherhoods alive, all y'all do. I just "tend" them and add what I can, when I "think" I know something. It's my honor and privilege to do so.

I ordered them from Williams Bothers. http://www.williamsbrothersmodelproducts.com/ They are 5" Smooth Contour wheels I believe that Tower carries some, but not all, of the Williams Bros line.

Williams Bros has several styles of wheels and a great line of dummy cylinder and dummy radials. I used their Vintage wheels and dummy radial on the Ryam Brougham, pictured below. .

Dave. If you build an original Kadet, will you do a build thread ? If so, I'd follow along.

How about building a Sport, instead of buying one ? The modifications are relatively easy. I used the Sport cowl, landing gear and tail gear, when I built mine.

If you run into issues, I'm sure that several Brotherhood members would be willing to offer assistance.

I have a build thread, somehere in the kit section, that may help to guide you through the more "interesting" steps.

Of course I'd do a build thread for the RC31 Kadet. I use them mainly to extract help from everybody else, which I usually need a lot of.

Hi Dave,

I'm very sorry to hear about Mike Gretz. I was traveling a lot in January and didn't see the news. He was a great guy and will be deeply missed. My Dad owned a small Hobby Shop for 30 years and he purchased a lot from Sig. He loved Sig. He occasionally organized a tour of the facility for his club and we would attend the Sig Fly In every year. He'd fly his Astro Hog Bibe and Piper Cub and I'd fly a Clipped Wing Cub and King Kobra, all of them covered and painted to replicate the Sig box art models. Mike Gretz was always there and always willing to spend time talking about anything models to anyone. He was a peach of a guy.

I'm curious about your build thread. Would you start it on this forum or a separate thread in the Kit Building forum.

Best Regards,

Bill

See if you can get in touch with Bob Nelson, he may have knowledge of SIG still that you need. I know Bob wasn't well last Flyin, he was recovering from gall bladder surgery, but heard he is doing better.
