you just want to soak it a little. too much oil will restrict air flow. I just smear it all over the out side of it, just enough to change its color a little. and I clean it with soap and water every time it gets dirty and then re-oil it

My buddies duratrax manual suggests using a plastic bag, however, I use my k&n filter charger kit and I just "spray-on" the oil.

Sorry,
you put the filter in the plastic bag, apply the oil, and work it in with your fingers. It keeps your hands cleaner.

when the vehicle reaches a certain speed (or a certain tranny RPM, if you will), a pin slides in the tranny which disengages first gear and engages second gear. Almost like a centrifugal clutch type system. There is no active gear switching on the operators part.

It's too bad I'd have issues getting my SMT on the plane or I'd come bash with you docphysics. I'll be in Long Island the week after next on business.

HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Yea, that was my friend Timmy. He just needs to figure out how these engines work. The first time it wouldn't start was cuz the barrel gap in the carb was like 1 micron instead of 1 mm, and the second time it wouldn't start was cuz he had a huge air bubble in the fuel line! I fixed it for him though.[8D]

Yeah they are very good. I just got my bearings today. I'll prolly start stripping the car down tonight and replacing all the bushings.

Just got my upgrade bearings from world_hobby in Hong Kong. Less than a week to arrive which is pretty good I think. Should remove most of the excess play from the wheel. Cheap mod for 11 dollars.

First off This only applies to the front drive cups only. I'll post a note on the rear drive cups as I get to upgrading my rear bushings.

Ok here is the Jist of the situation. I've started ripping apart my commando to give it a total BB upgrade.
The stock drive cups are 31mm in length, My test Drive cups were HPI #A549 5x40mm Drive cups. The good new is that they fit perfectly. BUT there is 9mm of exposed shaft between the bearing surface and the drive pin hole.

This should be remedied by getting HPI #A556 5x32mm Drive Cup, unfortunately I don't have any of those to be sure. but it looks very promising. I'll probably pick up HPI #A556 for my LHS tomorrow and let you all know for sure.

ORIGINAL: E_V

also ...........do HPI rs4 or mt2 drive cups fit the smartech............mine keep loosenig[:@]

I finished upgrading all my Front, Rear and diff bushings to BB. Will do tranny tomorrow. Everything looks great. even took the time to pack the diffs with more grease. my only beef is that Smartech has 2 huge holes at the bottom of the differential. which makes it very easy to add grease to the exposed diff gear. but on the downside can possibly allow dirt to get in if the diff is not bolted to the chassis plate properly. but that will be dealt with another time.

back to my original theory about drive axels. after examining further HPI #A556 may work. but a shorter dog bone will be needed as
the flange on the cup sits why lower than the flange on the stock part. this in turn may affect the position of the drive pin hole.
once I get my hand on another unit then I can give some definates.

Yeah thats a big problem with the smartech diffs. the wholes on the bottom of them just lets dirt in and it can really screw with your diff gears. I just used some electric tape to seal it off.
My BBs should be coming in soon. should help the car alot

It may take quite a bit of force but the bell will come off. the melted clutch shoes will be junk tho and you will be able to pry them out of the bell once you get the bell off. After you do get the bell cleaned out get the Duratrax white nylon shoes and double check the idle speed needle on your car or buggy to make sure the clutch is not prematurly engaging.

Finally finished upgrading my car inside and out to BB. Turns out the 2spd tranny was already BB. hopefully I'll be able to see how it performs once the level of mosquitos outside have gone down. it's vicious out there this year. The joys of living in cottage country! [:@]
