Depends on application and/or intended use.

I've run both, clutch and cam types.
The clutch type (soft shifts) is best suited for ON road applications.
The cam type (hard shifts) is best...

Have you consider modifying the axle extenders (rotate 90 degrees and drill new hole) to accomodate the smaller 2.5mm pin?

James, if I understood you correctly, your using Byrons' 15% Nitro 18% oil ie aviation fuel? If so and setting any tuning errors aside, that could account for the bog and/or lackluster performance.

Not really.. At that scale, IMO you'll want the strongest "tubing" money can buy to keep the wt to a minimum.

Mechanical or Hydraulic. I think either of those brake systems could easily be adapted and/or modified to serve your needs.

Nice plane...

Have you considered using a mechanical set up, much like those commonly used on 1/8 scale buggies? IMO, it would be easy to fabricate, and far less expensive than a hydraulic...

FWIW, I use 4130 Chrome Moly Tubing for my RC rollcages. Yes, its a bit spendy but NOTHING else even comes close to its strength vs wt ratio, its super light and extremely strong.
For best results...
