RE: My backyard tri-oval
well mine is perfect, my local hobbie shop is to big of a track and the battery will go dead on my mini-t after about 5-10 laps around.
On mine I can get about 30-40 (just guessing). It depends on what you like. I'm a pretty good intermediate driver so I have made some of my tracks about 3 feet wide in some spots but I usually try to keep it 5-6 feet wide. I like technical stuff though.
I've never measured mine, its about 35X20 which is plenty of space to get a good mini race. It fits 3 good size lanes across. The straits unless you have a modified motor don't need to be big otherwise they're boreing.
The jumps (in my opinion) shouldn't be big at all. The ramp in my above picture is the tallest jump yet and its only about 1.5 feet tall. The angle is a little steep for it and it will break your car if you don't hit it right but I plan on makeing another side so It will be a smoother table top. Keep them small and they are fun.
Tomorrow I will have pics and you have to see them I have changed my track a little.
I see this is your first post sluggonaut, are you makeing a track.

If space were no limitation, what would be the appropriate dimensions for an 1/18th scale off-road track?
For example, how long would you make the front straightaway?
How wide would you make the track? (meaning: width of the track surface not the width of the entire track layout)
How high would you make the jumps, being realistic for racing not for stunting and bashing?
Thanks for the input.

Also I was trying to think of a way to make wooden jumps so that they are movable. I was also thinking of making the surface of the ramp with carpet instead of wood. Possibly flip the carpet over using the back of the carpet for the surface of the ramp. I know I will have to use more cross braces inbetween the sideboards. My reasoning for this is that the flimsy(er) carpet will contour to the ground better where the carpet meets the ground.
I plan on cutting carpet lane width (x feet wide) and just laying the carpet on the ground giving an offroad contour to the track and possibly using garden hose for the berms and screwing it to the carpet.
I figure this would be my cheapest alternative being that I have endless supply of scrap carpet. and garden hose is fairly cheap.
Any Ideas?

I made mine last year. I will be doubling the size this year to run some 1/10 stuff and mini nitro cars. I plan on a total layout of 20x60 this year right now its 18x26.

RE: My backyard tri-oval
lanes are 4 foot wide ecxept for the middle its 3. We built that with no plan just started building one day, I even installed lights for night racing. the new track we designed is going to have five foot lanes, table top, step up, bigger double, a pit with a single before it, rythum section and a couple of small doubles. That thing took a lot more work than we ever thought it was going to take, this year I'm actually buying dirt and might even have acsess to a front end loader too. I can't wait for spring this year, LOL All your tracks look great too! It's amazing what we can all do in our yards when the scale gets smaller. I can't wait to get my nitro micro buggy I have to sell my rc18t first( or so says my boss/accountant/WIFE!)

I have been busy for a while but I now have pics of my new track. I got carpet for my jump landing till I get the other side done. Made a bunch of jumps and mobles to. The tri-oval was just to boaring, I like the technical stuff as you can see.
Also got some in action pics.

RE: My backyard tri-oval
lol, well my dad is thinking about getting a mlst, he already sold the other mini-t. It's my mom that doesn't want the track bigger. I'm going to have to find an empty lot somewhere.
I like that little jump though. I just staked down a 2X4 and sloped the dirt up. The mobles are cool to, if you don't hit them right it flips over. Also it flies off the big jump and hits the very edge of the carpet and you can tell by all the dirt at the end.
I think i'm going to leave it like this for a while, its perfect.

RE: My backyard tri-oval
These are a week later (today) lol. As you can tell it rained like crazy this whole weekend. So I have pictures of it underwater.[] No bashing today. I have been literaly shouvling the water out. The one on the right is the 9th bucket.
At least you get some more depth perception and I got to do some maintinance on my cars.
Also my LHS races have been cancelled for about 2 months now. Bakersfield is freaking wet right now.

RE: My backyard tri-oval
Ok I thought I saw someone on this thread asking about how to make portable jumps but after skimming the thread again I couldnt find it so here is how I made mine. I cut 2 triangles aproximately 9 inches high, and 4 1x2's 4 ft in legnth, and 1 piece of quarter inch luan (plywood) 4ftx2ft and started about 2in from the top point of the triangle and attached a 1x2 to the triangle with 1 drywall screw in each end and 1 to the bottom of the triangle (where the right angle is) and the other 2 in a slight curve to secure the plywood to to keep the curvature of the ramp and secured the plywood to the cross braces (4, 4ft long 1x2's). I kept the top of the triangle sticking up approximately 2 inches from the surface of the ramp so that my 4ft wide strips of carpet would keep from sliding off of the sides of the ramp. It works perfect ! I have made more of them since I took the above pictures. I also have aquired more carpet also. But I have had miserable wheather here so I have not had a chance to mess with it further. Attached is a generic 3d picture I drew up real quick with paint to give you an idea of how I made the ramps. Its kind of the way you would assemble launch ramps for shateboarding except not as drastic. hope this helps.
