Default Ikarus SuperStar Shocky

Everyone has been flying the gen 2 shockies, and the gen 1 extra and edge....but has anyone flown a gen 1 superstar?

If so what did you think?

I had a friend build one for me(he already had the kit) I supplied the avionics/motor for it. Im willing to bet it probably doesnt top 4oz. SUPER light.
Havent had a chance to fly it yet...STRICTLY indoor plane....NO outdoor flying for it. I dont know how he got it so light. He said its the lightest one he's ever built.
Instead of the balsa stiffners, he used the gen2 style boxed frame to stiffen the tail.

Here's the equipment.

AXI 2204/54
balsapr.com 10A brushless ESC
Bluebird pico 4ch reciever
3 BMS-303 servos
Thunderpower 7.4V 730mah lipo

I cant wait to fly this thing. Just wondering if anyone out there has flown one of the superstars?

I've flown just about every other 3D shocky out there.

I have flown the Edge and Extra foamies. Alot of competitors fly the Superstar soo it must be really good. I loved my shockflyers. As long as you stay indoors, the lighter the better. We dropped the landing gear on ours and it made a huge differance in flight, of course all good. You can't go wrong for indoor flying with a shockflyer. The superstar looks like it flys every bit as good as my Edge or Extra did.

What is your all up weight?

I have had 2 super stars and 2 edges and they do fly good but not as good as the new yak. I think the superstar flew better than the edge and about toping 4 oz it will we have built shockys as light as you can possible build by using lighter everything saving grams anywhere you possible can and we only reached 4.8 oz with landing gear. They fly great gen 1 and gen 2 just the new ones fly better I have had a total of 6 shockys and have build 10 and am going to be building 2 more very soon and I haven't had one that didn't fly great even at 9 oz with a 2208 my second shocky still flew good but the new yak at 5.8 on 3s flys the best out of any one I have ever had.

Yeah, Ive flown my 9oz extra 300(built for outdoors) and it flys great.
I've also flown my 7oz gen2 F3A, which is good for indoors and outdoor flying.

I flew a 5oz gen2 Yak, and while its certainly a nice flying plane, There was one thing I just couldnt get past.... It had some pretty ferocious aileron/rudder coupling that made it kinda difficult to do flat rudder turns. Kept wanting to roll on me.

I also flew a gen1 5oz extra. That plane flys NICE. Even flat rudder turns, really sharp plane. Nice stall turns, and wild outside loops. Slow speed harriers were gorgeous. It just crawled.

I flew a 5oz gen1 edge, its almost exactly like the extra.

Im hoping my new gen1 superstar will fly like the extra. Its alot smaller, and light as a feather. I know one thing, there's still not any plane out there that Ive seen that can top a shocky for easy indoor 3D flight when they are built under 6oz.

Axi 2204/54=24.5g total
balsapr.com 10A ESC = 7.1g total
Bluebird 4ch reciever = 4.6g total
(3) BMS-303 servos = 10.8 g total
GWS prop = 4.3g
= 51.3g or 1.81oz Total

So anybody know what the actual weight of the kit is? Foam and all supplied gear?

I havent weighed it, but I figure all up weight with the battery will probably be right at 5oz. Which is EXTREMELY light for a 31.5" wingspan plane with 225 sq.in. of wing area.

Hey , I weighed the airframe at 2.5 oz. w/ wheels and pushrods, etc. Also am experimenting with side force generators on the wings of my shocky extra. Anybody else trying it? After 5 or so flights I am amazed how stable the plane is on knifedge and the knifedge loops are incredible. I am going to leave them on for awhile they don't add much weight. My shocky weighs in at 5.7 flying w/ 480 TP 2c. 2204-54,306"s, and phoenix10.

Well....there you have it.

1.81 + 2.5 = 4.31oz minus battery.

Bill, just wanted to let you know, I have everything up and running on it now. I had it hovering in my bedroom for a few seconds.

Does your AXI get warm? This one gets a little toasty, maybe it was just because it was hovering. Nothing else gets hot, just the motor, or is it just because its not broke in yet? According to the instructions it doesnt need to be broken in though. I didnt let it get too hot though.

Hey, my AXI gets warm too, I think that is normal. What prop are you using? The 8.43 seems to work best. I guess i'm not leaving town yet. wish we had a place to fly indoors, i'm going to check around.

There has to be some places where we can fly just need to look around. I ordered a little screamer motor at 23 grams. a little lighter than the AXI. ten dollars cheaper" only money huh". I'll let you know when I get it. Also make sure the motor shaft isn't touching the motor mount as it could be rubbing on the mount. It was late at night when I mounted the motor. Bill

I might be able to score us another gym, but its smaller, and we would probably still be in the "you can only fly at certain times" bracket.

I stiffened up the wing on the Revolution 3D, so now its flying great. I flew it yesterday. It really needs a three cell battery. I think thats going to be my outdoor plane.

Im dying to fly this superstar. Its been sitting here giving me taunting me since you delivered it. Along with the micro plane I built too. Been trying to get around to flying it for two weeks. Everytime I go to fly it either Im having equipment issues like that lipo explosion or we cant get in the gym.

Well hopefully tommorow night wont be a repeat, and we'll get to fly.

Not sure about that Yak you were flying mine hardly need aileron to do a flat turn right side up of inverted

Oh dont get me wrong, the yak is a nice flying plane. It just didnt want to flat turn like I'm used to. Probably nothing a little mixing couldnt take care of.

Bill,
Are you going to the pattern event this weekend? Tony asked me if I was going to compete. I just laughed. Hadn't thought about it, but now that I do, it would be kinda funny to see the Revolution3D tearing up the skys in Sportsman class against those slimers. HEHEHE. It would have to be really calm air to get a decent flight though. I think the plane is capable of it. It doesnt have enough power for the other classes though.

I'll probably just go to watch. Might bring the planes though "just in case" we can get some airtime.

Anyhow if your interested in flying it, its a $35 entry fee, and you can find the pattern at http://www.nsrca.org/competition/sco...ling_cards.pdf

Just a matter of time and Tony will put one on for indoor. I think we need to practice for it. Hate to have to get a simulater. May go see the contest though. I would love to learn pattern, but for now I enjoy learning 3D. see ya Bill

That would be SOOOOO cool. For us to have a 3D indoor competition and a indoor pattern competition...I dont think there are any indoor pattern competitions.
Hmm. Time to start one! I think Ill talk to Tony and find out how they got NSRCA started as a SIG of AMA. Maybe its time for a SIG for indoor flyers too.

Yeah, that was fun last night. I was flying and noticed all the other planes landed, I figure they were just changing batteries. I didnt know they were watching me. I landed and turned around, and everyone was like "That was awesome".

Things Ive learned...

- Crashing all those foamies learning, was definatly worth it.
- It takes 2 tensors, a shocky extra, a F3A, and a superstar and about 3 months to learn 3D without a sim.
- You cant fly 3D with a brick.
- Basketball goals are evil plane sucking vampires with no remorse.
- Heavy planes break when they crash, light planes dont.
- Pilot error causes 80% of crashes, the other 20% is psycho servos.

Now all I have to do is perfect it.

Cant wait to see this new maneuver. Youve come up with some pretty cool ones. Stall turn to KE loop stall, and the flatspin landing to flatspin takeoff was AWESOME.

Yeah, Chip Hyde's flight was a riot. It looked like one of my first flights. "Takeoff.....wham...Takeoff....wham" I dont think he was very happy with it. As he shoved that plane down into the garbage can at the end. It was somehow oddly satisfing knowing that even the masters can royally screw it up too. It looked to me like he didnt have ANY expo dialed in. Which would make it next to impossible to do the maneuvers he needed to do to get in and out of the obstacles.
I think Quique had the right idea though. Takeoff full throttle and just do a tight loop around the bar, instead of all that square loop/hovering stuff. Unfortunatly he didnt quite get it.

That looked like lots of fun. Im gonna try to find some stuff for us tonight to goof with. Maybe try hovering under a bar or something. We need a garbage can...

Yup, I think there were a bunch of firsts last night.

I got the first hover over the rafters with a heli.
You got the first hover over the rafters with a plane.
You got the first double and triple harrier rolling circles.
I got the first inside to outside figure 8.
(which by the way, Im gonna try vertical next time we go flying...I think I figured out a way to do it without smacking the ceiling or floor)
You got the first KE loop.
You got the first Flatspin landing and takeoff...that was cool.
Im pretty sure your the first one to takeoff from the wall instead of the floor.

All in all it was a great night. Cant wait till next time. Maybe if it gets REALLY REALLY calm outside, I can go fly under the street lamp. Gonna play it safe though, and not fly unless its absolutly dead calm. 5oz gets blown around REALLY easily. Im seriously thinking about building one of those yaks.

Just taking a lunch break, yea lots of first for both of us. I've been working in a boat storage marina this morning and the place is huge must have a 80ft ceiling what a great place to fly. I think I saw clouds in it man it was killing me not to fly . I may have to give it a try sometime. Tony has a couple of Yaks in stock I think it is a great plane I may have to get another one. I bought an additional battery pack 480 TP. I bought some props also. See ya Bill

Man, see if you can score it as a place for us to fly....80 ft ceilings...YEAH.

Im still looking for places for us to fly. Ill find a place sooner or later. Im thinking about flying in the mall. I think I could convince the guy that runs Hobby Central to get us set-up for a demo in the middle of university mall. Its about the same size as the gym, and would give us the chance to fly, and him some free advertising. Imagine the crowd we could draw with some 3D flying in a mall. You'd pretty much have to hand launch and flatspin land or hand catch, but that would rock.
