Default 2nd plane. which best?

i think ive grown out of my super cub. i have logged up well ova 40 flights on it. im from ireland and have to fly in the wind alot.

the question i would like to ask is which of these two plane would the best to buy?

typhoon 3d

protech 330

http://www.boyztoys.ie/index.php?sub...etails&id=5388

could you please help with the pros and cons of each plane, like which handles wind the best, what sort of speed etc. also an idea on flight time with both would be great.

thanks keith

would you have any idea of what up grades would work with each plane.

I'm not too sure about either of those 2 handling the wind easily, but I would have to say to go with the typhoon. If it is your 2nd plane, then you need to keep the rates low on the plane, untill you get used to its flight caracteristics.

If you really want to fly in winds up to 15-20 mph, then I would suggest getting a plane made of wood, with a built up structure. Someting like a Cermark Lil Banchee 3D or a E-Flight Extra 260 would do nicely in the wind.

Keith,
Possibly not what you want to hear but I would have thought both those are too big a jump, I know as I've come the same route as you and detroyed a couple of planes after my Super Cub and before settling with someohing that took me to the next level.
Personally I'd look for something like the Multiplex MiniMag to learn to fly with ailerons, get to the stage with that in 4 months approx that you've upped the throws on it and moved the CoG back and can do most aerobatics that the plane is capable of including fly it inverted at least the full length of the strip. After that you may be ready for the next one but I'd rather have some experience with highly sensitive models like Extra's / Edge's on a simulator before I moved up to one of those !!!!!!!
If you do want to do the bigger jump would possibly look at the Multiplex Gemini but think that's probably too much at the moment as well in all honesty.
Good luck whatever you decide and if you want any more help let us know.

Keithn4:

The profiles seem to hold up a little better than a foamy and full balsa bodies. IF you have a computer radio, tone down the throws via dual rate and expo. a 3d-r and you have a docile airplane. My grandchild (6) trains on a rcx yak 54 foamy with good results. In the hobby, you are going to kill some airplanes at some point in time, just use reasonable judgement. You can fly almost any airplane down to a landing in higher winds, but it does take some skills to keep it powered on the ground while doing equal to 10-15 mph. If you get it wrong, plane is going to tumble down the strip and get damaged at best. When pushing the envelope, you will pay a price. ENJOY

An old term I once heard: "If ya' ain't crashin', ya' ain't learnin'" so you had better prepare for a crash every once and a while. Even the professional pilots will have a crash every now and then. It's something that really can't be avoided.

I do suggest getting a small balsa profile, my first one, the Cermark Lil' Banchee, was my first 3D. I did have the rates toned down quite a bit for my first ten or so flights, then I slowly made them more sensitive to my tastes. All of my 3D models will have at least 30ΒΊ+ of controll throw in them now, for ALL of the surfaces.

The lil banchee did quite well in the wins, and made my first electric plane. I did have previous stick time on a 3D model, so it wasn't too big of a deal.

Something with a high wing, and ailerons is better for you though, like the Mini Mag. This version: http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/240157.asp comes with a four channel radio, so adding ailerons will be as easy as cutting them out, and adding another servo in the wing. This will give you much needed stick time to prepare you for a 3D plane.

Here is my choice-------I luv this plane.

The Typhoon requires more "attention" at all times and reacts like a 3D airplane. But it is a lot of fun and performs pretty well.

The Great Planes Super Sportster EP (48") was a good choice for me. It handles the wind well and is easy to fly. It will fly with the power system it comes with, but most of us have upgraded it to a brushless motor for sparkling performance. Check the large thread on this site in the sport planes forum for comments. Mine is a hotrod with a Hyperion Z3013-14 motor, 10x7 SloFly prop, 3s-3150 battery. Flight weight is 3Lb. with 1oz ballast in the nose.

Good luck, Dave

Hi,

A couple of things, first Lil Banchee is no longer in production. Secondly we have replaced the Lil Banchee with Lil Banchee X. The new version just released, is very different from that of previous (starting from wing loading ... down to a larger tail section). Third, the airplane has limited availability in UK and Ireland. CML distribution will be in charge of it. You can contact Jason Varley ([email protected]).

Finally, I don't know if they have them in stock, so please contact Jason. Sorry, don't mean to hijack the thread.

Peace,
Steven Chao,
CERMARK
