I have just been reading the notes tucked in with the JR 8511 & 8411 servos and was surprised to read, "These servos MUST NOT be operated on 6V, 4.8V ONLY. I remember from an earlier discussion about servos that some fliers were using 6V. As I normally do as the instructions say I am now torn as to what battery to use. I wonder if there can be damage to the servo over a long period of use. I would like to use 6V as the futabas require 6V to get the rated torque.

Well I don't know too much about JR servos but if thats what they recommend and the specs seem fine I'd go with it. If it gives you the power it says on the box then try it out.
Why do all servo manufactuers have one good thing that others don't? I really like those karbonite gears that Hitec make, they'd be really great in a 3010. Why don't Futaba copy them and use em in a 3010? Metal ones are ok but they are heavy and you only get them way higher up. The karbonite gears come with the low range Hitecs. That's what I like. You don't have to spend £60 to get quality gears.

The 3010 are really good anyway. The problem with any metal gears is that there is always a weak link in the form of a plastic gear which will strip anyway.
I am going to voltage regulate a 6V pack down to 4.8v, so that there is no current drop when servos are moved, and if one cell goes you still have control.

Thats fine but I think Hitecs have a complete karbonite setup, not just one or two. The whole thing is karbonite.
Thats a little suprising about those metal ones, I thought all of them were metal. Have you seen the extra big 100 Kg torque servos that Futaba make? They have no metal gears or anything, just bog standard plastic.
3010s are good from what I've seen, but they could be better if they have what them Hitecs have. I might just get a Hitec
But if the Boy was happy with 3004's all round on his Capiche I'll do that to start with, then slowly upgrade to 3010's if I feel like it. If I don't get any crap interference.....[>:]

Luke , that voltage regulator sounds of interest even though does not solve my immediate problem. Is it an off the shelf item or something you're gonna make up.

take care with VRs - they can cause probs Ive heard.
Personally I prefer simplicity..
I am going for a mix of the 8511 and Fut 9206, all 4.8
With a good battery back used regularly I dont see a liklihood of cell failure, unless it is mis charged.
The moment it begins to fail on nominal capaicty during its quartery capacity test it gets demoted and watched or thrown in the bin!

Thing i am worried about is that at full deflection (snap roll e.t.c) the voltage drop goes so low that the reciever stops working. Or am i just feeling a little nervous?

Starting to get a bit more confident now with covering (I've done enough
) and with ARTFs coming out with such fancy schemes these days, I'm trying some more complex schemes myself to keep up.
The top was a matter of getting the lengths and angles right.
The bottom was tricky as the joins do not run down the ribs, so the stripe sheet has to be made up separately, then ironed onto the wing as if it was one big sheet.
Forgot to mention that each wing is about 325grams (11.5 oz) in this covered state. Seems pretty good to me, especially when you consider the size of them

On the question of JR servos operating on 6v. I have been told that if a regulator is used its ok to keep the voltage below 6v. After a charge some packs reach 7 to 8 v. Thats where the damage is done. The american JR servos are fine on a 6v regulator so the JR importer has told me. Am about to get a load of 8611's from US for this reason so I can use on a Li-on system. Macgregor wont respond to my email about if its ok on UK 8511's.

Luke where were you? Nice days flying and you wernt there [
].
Ed, just so you know, the design for the top is only half funtana. The leading edge is from a CA models extra design. The underneath is from a CA Models Fantasy. though in all cases, I'm using different colours.
Start on covering the fuz tomorrow, still not 100% certain what to do with it though [&:]

Wow, those wings are very light! Wonder how much the fuz will weigh with feathers. Probably light too!
I have so much time on my hands, I am 100% home alone for 4 days. My parents have gone Turkey for a vacation and my sister is in Cambridge Uni getting her degree. My other sister is married so its me home alone! I wish I had something to do. Build a plane preferably of course

Sprink,
my mum got in a right strop and told me that i couldnt go flying that day. Spent the WHOLE day on the computer with her looking at university prospectuses
So parent trouble is also adding to the delay of my c140 also!!
As for my Capiche, going the route of a totally original scheme that will be very difficult to do(lots of curves) but should look alright when its done hopefully. Major structure should be finished this week if my mum calms down.

Covered the cockpit. I still have no idea as to the scheme, so don't know what I will do tomorrow. Just make it up as I go along I suppose [&:]

Yep, a good laying job and we can get the full size Extra.
That said a YAK 52 with FULL overhaul and EVERYTHING is £34,000
Lots of great upgrades, I plan on getting one.
