When this first started Sean Mcmurtry flew to "those daring young men and their flying machines". It has a lot of runs in it and worked pretty good. Personally I think a copulation would be better. Maybe start off with the Van Halen 1984 intro or Red Rider "nuerida". Then go to some thing that really pops. Like Yes, "owner of a lonly heart" or Aldo Nova "Fantasy."
Maybe you could Chip Hyde in his forum what they did at TOC.

I think it is an insult to play music at an event like this. What is wrong with the natural engine sounds?
Maybe you would like muffled exaust on race cars so you could play loud rock misic instead of hearing the cars.
I think the MTV generation has gone overboard with wanting to cram there music down evertone elses throat.
If I went to an airshow and they are playing music thru the PA, I will leave.
But I guess you don't care. Do you?

MTV generation? I have been to many fly in's where the pilots flew to classical music, hardly MTV gen material, and it was a nice addition to the demonstration.
If you don't like it then stay at home or leave, your choice. Don't just arbitrarily knock someone elses idea until you have experienced it in person. Besides, I can't think of any music that can drown out a DA or 3W when it's down low and close and being flown hard, so that really isn't an issue in the first place.
Oh and FWIW I have also been to contests where they did play music that wasn't to my liking over the PA and I DID leave because of it.

For 3D with a large airplane, I love Con Te Parti (Time to Say Goodbye) by Andreas Bocelli. For smaller airplanes (funfly type) something more upbeat (Glen Miller "In the Mood" is good). Rock and roll is less dynamic in nature, seldom with small pauses or good points to set up for the next figure but if your flying style is more one sided, then anything that keeps a beat works well. I really like Peter Gabriel's "Solisbury Hill" with its nice relaxed feel and flowing nature. It gives good bars for hestation manuevers as well as smooth, rolling figures.
You best bet is to try a ton of music and then find someone who can nicely mix a four minute CD with about 3 different tunes. It is also nice to begin and end on the same music to bring a returning theme to the flight. And remember, choose music to fit the airplane. Smaller, quicker airplanes need faster tempos, larger airplanes need slower tempos.

Thanks Mark.
good to see some constructive input. I thought exaclty the same thing about tempos to plane size. I'll probaly be flying something along the lnes of an Extra. Cap or Giles with a .52 in it. So its a small plane.

Flying to music adds a new element of beauty to a freestyle routing. Following the music perfectly is a very cool thing to do/watch. I plan on flying my Free to "Layla." For the fast part, I'm going to use Derek and the Domino's version. For the slow part, Clapton's version. It's gonna be cool.

This is a very cool topic. I've been thinking lately how we tend to accentuate the beats with point rolls. It seems to be the easiest way to express a strong, driving beat. I wonder, though, if there might not be another way......It seems in most of the videos I've seen lately when the music goes from something smooth to hard driving the plane too often goes into point rolls. Ideas?

Freefall rocks.
When I fly layla, there's 3 destinct beats on the start of the song. So I'm gonna take off to the initial chord, then 3of4 to the right with the beats ending up KE canopy towards me... Then I'm woking on the rest of it. Layla has a fast part and a slow part so it'll be good for free. It's gonna be sweet. John Glavin was going to use it and we were talking about a routine so that's where some of my ideas came from. THen I can't remember much of what we talked about so I think most of it's orginal haha

Point rolls do become passe quickly, but with that driving beat it takes noticable attitude OR heading changes. For this example, feel music with a driving beat (and bluegrass works great for this with a funflyer, Madness, Hype, something wild) in your head that calls for point rolls. OK, the first pass of point rolls has well demonstrated your skill in that arena and you know that the crowd will start to yawn should you make a flight of that. So, flip around and start again a point roll, perhaps an 1/8th right, quick 1/8th left and then yank quickly through an 8 or even 16 sided loop. Exit that loop and lay her on knife-edge (can I say that here?) and fire through a knife-edged hexagon, or a knife-edged square with rapid four-point rolls on each leg. Now, flying like that you can make a simple but very exciting 2 minute flight. That is why it is SOOOOOOO necessary to mix your flying music to allow several styles. Any single style can quickly get boring unless you are one of those absolute top notch pilots that carefully choreographs an entire musical ballet (I mean the type that are the top five or ten freestylists in the past T.O.C.. Even the nice flights in the Ballet of the Sky series, while nice, lose something in the repetition of the style). Anyway, without going into too many more details on the possibilty, remember that point rolls need not go always in the same direction. 2/8ths left, 1/4 right, snap one quickly and slow roll the rest of the past. Keep changing directions. Keep changing headings. One should not fly straight and level for more than a couple of seconds and then only that long to accentuate the next figure. Get wild, hold the line and keep as much precision as possible, it will look good.
The last thing I can say to this is that I have been able to make two or three really wild and fun flights before my head is absolutely drained of attention and alertness.

phillybaby, clocks is a great song choice.
Still you can't go past Frefall by Tom Petty like Lobob said. i had a thought, would it be an idea to practise on a sim first because at my club it takes a bit of work to set up the PA system and they usually only do it on showdays. Unless there is another way to play the music loud enough for me to hear while im flying. Also is there a good quality cheap sim i could buy to practise flying on as well as heli flying, coz' I'm loking at getting an electric heli.
Anyway, I'm off now,

Get a little boom-box capable of playing MP3 stuff, record your CD from the computer and there you go. A little MP3 box can be purchased for about $100.00. Also, with it sitting behind you you don't have to blare it so loud as to offend others that may not enjoy your selection.
