Forget it, I had one. Had a dead stick, came in and banged the wingtip. It DID NOT do anything to the wing, but the fuselage snapped in half just behind the wing. Never will get another one. Way to weak. The entire fuselage is nothing but covering and 1/4" balsa framing.

Thanks for the information splais! I was thinking about geting one until you told me about it.
I always have dead stick problems. I even broke the tail off my super sportster.

if you have deadstick problems, get a better engine.

splais
I did the same to my flip, broke in two places(my fault wasn't a deadstick), hopefully it will last the summer.

Have you looked at the 3styla at www.rcworld.co.uk?

I've flown the heck out of mine for two years without any problems. It is built light, but that's why it flies so good

A little quick to bash every time you can eh?
I have one now, and until it had a regulator installed, had many deadstick issues. Broke the gear block out, it's now got nylon bolts and holding up great. No broken fuselage. Even if it did break, well it's sheeting and crutches, easy fix- and easy to reinforce if you see the need. splais, the plane is not all balsa despite the stupid Kyosho stickers that say so. There's lots of ply, about the same as any other ARF 3d of this size.

The other 3 Flips in my club haven't broken the fuse either by the way.

Good flying plane! I will say the covering sucks in application and appearance.

Does a hype fly as good as the flip does?

"A little quick to bash every time you can eh? "

Were do you get that comment from. I bash very few planes. I do get tired of the constant "this is the greatest plane ever build" reviews. I have never made a comment about any plane that was not truthful as to my experience. I also have 3 or 4 extensive reviews in the User Review section section on what have proved to be great planes. I have or have had dozens of planes. Only a few have had problems. As to the Flip, there have been several postings over time about the weak fuselage. There is another one in this very thread. And there is no ply in the area behind the wing. Just 1/4" sticks.

In any event I fail to see your point. If it makes you feel better - how about this: Heh, Da Kid, the plane is great, best flyer, most durable thing I've had, get one.

I havn;t come across many Flips so this may not apply to the Flip as much but if you wanna make a good plane:

Da Kid

The Hype and the Flip are both exceptional flyers but they are high performance, lightweight planes and will not tolerate rough landings and other abuse. If you are a novice pilot looking to learn 3D, take a look at some of the profile planes. These planes are usually pretty tough and you can learn the basics. slow flight, hovering and flat spins (deadsticks) ect with much less pucker factor.

FWIW I have never seen Splais bad mouth anyone/anything and I'm on RCU alot.

As far as the Flip 3D, mine is almost two years old now w/ YS FZ63 and I enjoy this plane but it is built up very lightly!

I also have a Hype 3D w/West 50 T1 and it is built up light as well, but I find my self flying the Hype alot more.

Both are great planes.

And just to provide a little more info for the Da Kid. My only point is that the Flip is probably not for the new 3D flyer that may be making bad landings or dinging the thing a lot. While I'm not a fan of the looks of the U-Can-Do planes, the things fly great and seem to be relatively indestructable. There are 4 or 5 of them at out field and people are flying the s*** out of them. They hold up very well and seem to do anything you care to try and are pretty cheap.

I think the point here is that the flip is a bit fragile but that is because it is lightweight and therefore 3D's well. If you have an unrelaible engine or you haven't mastered landing yet, you may want to consider another airframe. No bashing needed, just a warning that this thing aint so tough. Even the guy who started the thread may reconsider the flip when he gets his engine running better and is wanting a small plane that 3D's well.

" FORGET the Flip. I had one for a little while. I had a deadstick, had a bad landing in that I hit a wingtip (not all that hard by the way, didn't even damage it). THE FUSELAGE SNAPPED IN HALF behind the wing! nuff said. "

This is from another Flip thread. Seems everytime someone asks about a Flip, jackinthebox splais says they suck. Annoying. They fly better than they crash.

Mine is still in the box. Power will be a Saito 82a.

That Saito 82 should be perfect for the Flip. I have an 82 in my EF Edge, vibrates a bit due to the weak profile mount but I beefed up the mounts and it is better. My next thought if I couldnt lower the vibration was to put the 82 in a Flip. I think it will be a great combo.

Chip Hyde says on his forum that he thinks the Flip is the best 3D plane in its size. I figure that's a good endorsement since he isn't even affiliated to Kyosho. Let us know how that Saito 82 works out in it.

Had mine for 1 1/2 years now and have nocked the landing gear out three times (what do you expect when you repeatedly hover till it's out of gas), but it repairs very easily. I would highly reccomend some nylon bolts for the landing gear. Out of the 3 crashes I've had, (one full throttle) the repairs have only taken a few hours. Mine just keeps coming back.

I've been flying since I was 10 (for six years) and this is the plane that truly taught me most of the 3D stuff, even more so than my sudokhoi. Mine has a saito 91 and I've been thinking about a saito 100 too. This plane easily handles the power if you manage it.

And now they're only $180, go for it.

I had the exact same problem as did splais. I flew my Flip 3D yesterday for the first time. On the second flight I ran out of fuel. Reason, 10 oz tank doesn't last long enough for a Saito 91. But regardless here's what happened. At about 6 feet above the ground while landing dead the plane snapped. I thought I plenty of speed but I guess not. The other pilots thought I had plenty of speed also. The left wing tip hit first (in grass) then the main gear. I always replace my landing gear screws with plastic ones so that the screws break. In this case they did not break and the landing gear and attaching wood was ripped from the plane. So that should tell you that it was not a hard landing at all. After I retrieved the plane and analyzed the damage I noticed that the fuselage was cracked about 6 inches behind the wing. Both top and bottom was cracked and there was one small crack above the wing. This shouldn't have happened and the other pilots that saw it were just as shocked as I was. The semi-hard landing was not that bad. They said I should call Kyosho and ask for a replacement. After I got the plane home and started looking at it I decided to fix it myself. Reason being I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks for another plane and I don't want another one built to break apart. So I started removing some of the covering on the rear of the fuselage. Much to my amazement there is no ply or spruce from the wing to the back of the fuse. I'm surprised this plane didn't come apart while I was flying it. Not only that this is the softest balsa I have ever seen. I'm no expert builder but I have built and repaired enough planes to know you need to have ply and/or spruce to keep the fuselage together. I believe the only thing keeping the fuselage together was the covering. I am extremely disappointed with the construction.

As far as how the plane flew when it was flying goes, it flew great and light. Definitely one of the best flying 3D planes. But if Kyosho hasn't done anything to beef up the fuse then you need to stay away from it. That will be my last Kyosho plane for sure.

but then Kyosho does say that it's not a begginners plane, beefing it up would add more weight and reduce it's flying qualities.

Thats because theres no ply or spruce from the wing to the back of the fuselage. Light is right
