Lots of practice and the right plane will help. No gyros, 1:1 thrust to weight minimum, dead on CG or slightly tail heavy. Large enough control surfaces with plenty of deflection. There are a ton of variables.

First it takes a plane with enough power to hold the airplane in the air. That is the begining. Then you need flight controls big enough to force the airplane to go where you want it to go. Then it takes lots of fuel and then more fuel.
I suppose there are a few people that use gyros but I do not know of anybody that does. With lots of practice I can now hover right in front of me. So really just practice practice practice.

First, you need a good plane/engine setup. There are several. I prefer Paul Swanson's Burrito for the plane. But Morris Hobbies, OMP, and Extreme Flight make some just as good or better (depending on who you talk to) as the Burrito. The Burrito will hover at half throttle with a good ball bearing .46 like an FX 46. I have a GMS .47 on mine and it will easily carry it straight up and out of site. Also it has the surfaces to move the tail of the plane where you want it to keep it verticle. Second, as everyone is going to tell you, you have to practice!!! Start up high and the better you get the lower you will want it to the ground. Trust me on this!!! Good luck!

Very fast servos boosted with a 5 cell pack will also help. You'll know you are there when you can back the plane down slowly without loosing the bubble. Shouldn't take more than a 100gallons of fuel.

I agree with the suggestions. I have fellow club memeber who said his Magic just won't hover. I asked for the sticks and proceeded to hover it. His jaw droped open! I told him he probablyneeded the CG back a bit, but mainly it takes a lot of PRACTICE!

CofG is a myth, sure the extra elevator response helps once you know what you're doing, but with the ni-cad up front in my Cougar it makes no difference to having it up it's &$$.
once you get the balance right you can up the ATV, seal any surface gaps and put the CofG back, thats for when you are ahead of what the planes doing, till then CofG makes no odds, a over responsive plane at this stage doesn't help.
more info on how i did it at my half dead site www.philsrcworld.fsnet.co.uk under Cougar review.

actually philly i would disagree with the cg myth as a further back cg would prophang easier than a more forward cg,but saying that you cant really gauge this with a cougar, try something like a majestic or synergy and youll find it will try and drop the nose forward with cg at front get a happy medium and you will sit there till the tank runs out

depends on what you play with i spose, i can hang a Cougar all tank long ZZZZzzzz but i can't get the Capiche doing it yet, just way different styles.
what i did when i nailed it was up my ATV from 100% to 120% and take DOWN! the expo, i also sealed the rudder gap, this transformed the plane in the hang but i was now able to not only keep up, but demand the extra agility. however before hand i couldn't have.

deffinatly not a myth, my CG on my new cougar is about the rear of the CG range. it hovers well, BUT, my old cougar with the CG way back (about 1/2 chord) was easy, pop it up and use rudder to keep it there, elevator wasnt a problem too much untill you started to torque roll it

strange that having the weight at the top makes it more stable, you'd assume it'd be better with the fuz acting as a weight. unless a rear CofG acts like a point where it's attached to the ground and the engines pulls it away, in which case rear is better... ummm
still ni-cad up front or back, makes no odds to me Cougar, but it is just barley hanging together lol

Yeah I see what you mean, by making it a tad unstable you'd have more control to do crazy things, kinda like what they doing with the latest fighters making them more aerodyanimcally unstable then just sticking a big computer in them.
