Default 3D Servo requirements?

Group,

I jusr received my Funtana 90 today and I have a question about servo's in general. Not neccesarily just for the Funtana 90.

Where do you need the strongest servo's for 3D? I am assuming in the tail? Which is the most important control surface(s) for 3D flight. Am I correct to assume that the ailerons need the least amount of servo speed/torque?

Clueless...

Riff

Go with with all 5645's. Good price and they are strong at 6 volts. 168 ounces. Metal gear.

Are the 5645's really needed for the F90? Seems like a lot of torque! Would the 645's be good enough?

Back to the original question though, where do you really need the spped/torque the MOST? Rudder/Elev/Aileron??

you want the most torque you can get on the h9 funtana 90 200 ounce isn't a bad idea i use hitec 5945's check out all the threads were people used under torque servos and lost the plane because of it i won't not use hs 645 servos in anything they said they improved them but lots of things have been improved that sucked

Rudder needs the most torque on a 3D bird. I would say that ails need the least, but on many 3D planes the ails are so big that you really need high torque on them too to prevent fluttering during normal flight.

Rudder needs the most and 5645 has a lot of torque for the money. The 645's aren't much cheaper than the 5645's and servocity.com offers 15% off when you buy 4 or more 5645's so the difference is less than $10 per servo, go digital

And no, you don't need this much torque on the ailerons or elevator halves but who knows what your next plane will be???

Personally, I was thinking about a Funtana and thought 5625's on ailerons 5645 on rudder and two 5475's on the elevator halves all on 6V. But that's just what I'd do, there are a thousand combinations that would work.

I am using Futaba S9451 on 6 volts 120 oz .10 sec. Have not had any problems with this setup.

Mike,

I've been looking for someone that is using 9451's. How do you like them???

How does the centering, resolution, holding power and gear lash (slop) compare to other servos you have used?

The specs look good but I wanted to hear some first hand experiences.

Thanks
George

Put all you can on the ailerons. That plane is very prone to aileron flutter.

5645s are perfect, run on 6V. Use them all around.

If you want to go cheap you can use 645MG, but if you do, better use carbon rods and ball links and not that stock garbage H9 gives you.

I have seen 3 of these planes go down due to cheap servos and aileron flutter.

Why is it when advising on which servos for 3D people forget the importance of speed, some high torque servos are VERY slow and hence are not only no good for 3D but dangerous, Rudder yes requires the most torque but also requires the MOST SPEED.
If you do nothing else but buy some fast and torquey servos for rudder only you wont go far wrong (futaba 9404-?).

i guise the same reason people use expo now days even the slowest servos are fast yes its nice to have servos so fast the rudder flex's when you blip it but most of the time when people use ultra fast servos they crank the expo up so a good match between speed and torque is better than having the fastest servos made any servo under .18 seconds is ok to use to me that feels fast enough

George,
The 9451 a great have been using them on ailerons in some of my pattern planes. Have not had any problems with them. The are fast. I check the slop and there was none in the servo just a little bit in the linkage but not to bad. On thing have good batteries in your plane.

I have a BME 37% Ultimate were I will be using Futaba 9351. 192oz .13 sec on 6 volts. Standard size.

Hey Mike.....

Yeah, those 9451 servos are wicked fast on Mike's Funtana 90 and they, I know have more than enough power to support all the 3D flying you can throw at it!!

BTW, Mike, How's that BME Ultimate coming....haven't seen it in a while....finish the graphics!!

645s will work with stock hardware... but use what you will feel comfortable with.

I like the Futaba S3305's:
124 oz/in torq at 6.0 volts in .15 sec(I think) They are metal geared too!

They are only $37.99 a piece on tower

Iceman,
those 3305's seem good.......and at 37 from Tower, that is pretty good for the servo you get....

The 3305's do look good but Tower charges around $30 for a replacement gear set [X(]

Hopefully you won't need gears any time soon.
