Hi John, great to hear from you! Hows things? Dad sends on his regards.

Yes, ive been going out as much as possible which at this time of year isn't an awfull lot, but i am flying. Got a new 160 in the Synergy and its going really, really well. Having to adjust the thrustline slightly with the new engine/prop combo which i want to get sorted before i go back to flying the Capiche. Haven't flown the balsa beast for ages Can't do everything i suppose.

See you at the first Centralised, not far away now eh!

Angus

Thanks for the links Angus.

Looks like a good format, I think I like it. Would not want to restrict the planes though (C140 is too long for starters [&:]).

Did you really fly a freestyle comp next to the NOVOTEL Stevenage?

I can just about manage my shocky in that field (The one with the windsock, and old helipad)??

Or is there another field??

Regards,

Steve

On the basis that there is only Novotel in Stevenage, and only one field next to it, then yes. (not that I flew in it [&:])

Theres a simple solution to this whole argument here

basically have 2 or 3 rounds. Maybe 2 to music and 1 silent. Don't have any compulsory schedule but tell the judges to look out for precision. This way if a person wants to fly precisely then they can do and they can get marks for it, wheras if someone just wants to do out and out 3D without much precision then obviously they still get marks but not as much if they lack the precision

simple solution? I think it is

this way people who can fly precision can still get the marks for it and people who can't can still fly at the event but obviously not score as highly It should be anyones choice to do what they want

remember guys this is the rcme FREESTYLE! Not compulsory routines and malarchy

I would welcome higher scoring for precision. When i competed a few years a go i flew like a COMPLETE MUPPET so ain't making any excuses!!! But i was doing some good stuff such as one roll circles into one roll loops etc. However, after two rounds i was behind someone who was doing 4 point rolls and putting in the wrong rudder inputs!!!!!! The only difference was that he was flying lower. To me that didn't seem quite right at all!!!!

Although i'm better prepared now, at the time me and my plane weren't to hot at 3D so i was relying on my one roll stuff etc etc to bump up my score. However, as it turned out the scoring was more bias towards 3D and the more exciting style of flying than i'd anticipated.. which is fair enough i guess!!! Its better to watch thats for sure, though certain f3A elements can be apealling to.

Having just read this back to myself it sorta sounds like i'm whinging - I'm really not! In fact i'm looking forward to having another bash this year now i (sort of) know what to expect. All i'm saying is that good flying should be recognised over dodgy but low flying!!

Who'd be a judge! I'm seriosly grateful that the judges take the time out to help at this comp so i'm not haing a go at then or TW in the slightest.

bring on September!

i think that 3 rounds should be flown 2 music and 1 either fully fixed or have a couple of set monevers.
allthough it is called freestyle everyone who is competeing has to prctise and usally they make there own fixed pattern up [X(]

Was there a time limit on the music round? All the vids of music rounds that i've seen have been about 4 to 4 1/2 min long

There was a time limit of 4 mins on the music round. I would prefer a time'recommendation' of around 4 to 5 mins, because otherwise the music has to be mixed to last exactly four minutes, which is a lot of work!

Just mix two or three songs taking the segments you want from each. Most pilots use more than one song.

I was talking globally. Almost all pilots use more than one song.

im with luke for more flexibility on the music length

I'm with Angus - cut it down! Set it to 4 minutes maximum (you can do less if you wish). Then part of the challenge is to ensure your music and flying can all be done within the limit. Otherwise you will get someone using Queens Bohemian Raphsody, and taking the full 8 minutes [&:].

With modern computers, it is easy to make and burn your own music meddley. I have already started reviewing music to see what is suitable (the advantage of having an extensive and varied CD collection )

I personally think a maximum of 5 minutes would be better.
If the event was made into two days this would also be viable.
If you look at most of the freestyle vids out there from other major comps such as the TOC and Don Lowe masters most go over 4 mins and are around the 4.30 mark

Why not set a max limit of (say) 5 1/2 mins for the entire flight i.e. engine start to landing?? Sorry if i'm a bit out but every one of my attempts to fly competitions has been culled by rule changes or cancellations.

Hey, I'm using Muse

You dont want to include engine start for safety reasons - people will rush to get into the air, anything could happen.

Yes. If you want it to be a high level comp you gotta run it like a high level comp. That means good organisation, good use of time and if you dont take off before 3mins after you connect your glow, tough *****, you lose the flight. Its the only way to get through a lot of flights.
I recall a few years back the unflappable CPLR having difficulties starting an engine at the worlds(i think, mite have been a smaller tourny) and having to switch to number two model with bout 30 secs left to start.

Is there a rough date set for this event?
