Just picked up the Hanger 9 Extra 330L with a BME 102
is anyone flying this combo, and what kind of 3D performance can I expect. Also what would be the best prop for unlimited vertical and hovering. Ron

Hi airspeed917!
Good plane... great motor from what I read. I'll be flying one in the next week or two in a Radiocraft 35% Extra... so I'll get a better feel for the BME-102 at that point.
I just sold my H9 Extra w/ 3W-85 in it. The motor only had a little over a gallon run through it and it would hover and climb out. Not real fast... but it would do it. I think the DA-100 and BME-102 would be better choices for this plane. The DA would have the most power... since the plane is a bit chunky... but the BME-102 would keep it as light as possible and still should provide plenty of power for serious 3D action.

Yes I have this combo it works very well.
I found the Bolly 26-10 CF prop worked real well. I ran my plane totaly staock save the motor. I even ran small battery packs 800mah on ing and 1400mah on the RX...8411's all around and it is 100% capable of TOC quality performce...I'm also running it up at 6000ft in Colorado. Had to charge after 2-3 flights but it works very well.
Gotta keep it light mine is 24.5-25lbs and needs less weight....if it was 22-23 it would be perfect.
That is where the CAP is suppose to be I'm working on mine now

From: Richmond,
BC,
I have the BME102/Extra combo. This was my first foray into big gassers, and it has been very rewarding.
I am using the stock BME mufflers and RCS 26/10 prop. This combo with Duralites weighs 25.25 lbs.
I have over 70 flights on it now, and no problems. I have the earlier single servo wing version. The power is great, unlimited vertical, very precise flyer. Several people have flown it and can't believe its an arf.
I'd recomend against a Bolly prop unless your closest neighbours are deaf. They Rip too easy.

Bolly's can get loud......but its all a matter of putting more pitch on it....Mine is running at 6000ft and our motors don't perform as well up here. The Bolly 26-10 worked the best for my situation.....
The Menz S 24-10 was OK but was actually a bit loud. The Menz S 26-10 was too much prop and motor was not happy....the Mejzlik 26-10 was not good on performance side of the house in this specific application...The Mejzliks work great in other applications (pattern engines or different airframe or motor.....and same on the Menz.....
Each plane will react different to a prop...becasue of motor, weight, airframe......A giles or Edge may not like the same as a Cap of equal size and weight. Then add in what you as a pilot like in flying style.
God isn't it great to have different solutions and different options.

Troy- Rojecki just called me andhe had just put in his first four flites with his H9 Cap
ours are basically identical except for C/G and elevator throws. He lives at sea leve land has flown mine here at SLC (4500 ft)
We both have brand "Z" singles on some tuned canes I bought overseas and both turn 6600 or more on 26x10 Menz S props. bothe planes weigh a hair under 23 lbs dry. NO lightening anywhere on either model plus the exhaust systems weigh a lb.
His setup - as he describes, is simply nuts.
(He likes maximum flaillability).
Mine is more sedate with different C/G and lessened throws on elevator.
If you can whittle yours down to 23 lbs it can do nothing but get better.
Another old (very good) pattern flier in Denver is getting this model with the Z and a pipe.
Stand back!

The BME I am flying on the H9 Extra is the older version like 98cc and turns a Menz S 24-10 at around 6800. The Bolly 26-10 CF prop was running in the 64-6500 range.
The Extra has a weight of 24.5lbs....
I also have a CAP and it looks like with that same BME should be down in the sub 23lb range. Many improvements were made on the CAP and it is sure to be lighter. I also think its a good looking bird in the red white and blue.
I'm curious to see Kelly's Cap fly with the 80 single. What about shaking? I'm by no means a gasser type of guy...but the larger singles I have seen shake a bunch...not that the BME is a smotth purring machine mind you but its better than some of the big singles I have seen......
What about CG in the Cap Dick?
In the Extra I had the batteries right on the CG and it was great. Right in the middle of the range given by Mike...and I think it flew great there. In fact I didn't like the CG behind there it was a much better performer with the CG foreward. Gave something up in 3D abilities but that's why they make weights and wire ties...

Kelly -did I say Kelly?
The smoothness thing you mention is a non issue with the 80 single - really-
These engines are in a class all their own.
My 60 turned the 24x10 Menz S at 6500.
Anyway, powerwise no problem at Denver.
Do not avoid a tuned can! the power increse and noise reduction is well worth it - get a 80 size K&S
The C/G in the CAP will fall a little aft unless you plan for it - put the two elevator servos aft but stick a big Hi Tech digital next to the wing tube for the rudder.
look at my web page on the setup there -
from what you say -using the Bolly prop rpms -you could use a lot more power.
The MenzS IS A good 3D prop for the 80 -But a 27X10 MenzS-OR-the 26/12S is quieter and pulls very hard.I get 6200 on the 27x10 here
Right now we are waiting for another 80 - demand has outstripped production.
I have made a mod on my 80's and Rojecki's that so far seems to be all good - I will let you know if it works as well on the nex ones we try - it is a simple bolt on .

BME 102
My first gas engine, and incredibly rewarding.
2.1+ Power to weight on gp extra 330 33%.
I belive you will really like this engine.
Great ease of use for a first time gas engine.
