I think there is plenty of meat there to glue in hinge points. If you glue them in properly they wont pull out unless there is total failure of the control surface. At which point was most likely caused by something else other then hinge failure. PLus sealing the hinge line will help from any posibble flutter. I have watched airplanes that have had flutter. The pilot brushed it off as engine vibration but you could hear the flutter on high speed passes. He lost the air plane later that season to hinge failure. It may not happen right away but it will happen.
ALso the number of hinges on a given surface makes a difference. On the other hand poor linkage setups can cause flutter aslo like having the linkage on the control horn to close to the flying surface.
On this build I used the c/a hinges on the ailerons. Did them before reading much of this link. I have sealed the surfaces and will keep a very carefull eye on them and hope they wont disinegrate my airplane.

If you use hinge point then do Gorilla glue or something similiar that foams. It will create a plug behind them inside the surface and fill in the gaps as well.

Well, Santa was very good to me! Wifey (gotta love her!) decided that it was sometimes too much trouble to drag the big Ulti out to the field, and figured I could use a "lil' version. So, I got the GP Electric version. Gonna outfit it with the Futaba S3114 Servos, Berg 4L Receiver, Rimfire 35-30-1250 motor with a 35A Speed control. Should be enuff power to pull it around well. My first Impressions of the kit are a Very light, very well built model. The covering is perfect, requiring very little re-shrinking of the covering. Now, all i've gotta do is find a small, very lightweight helmet head pilot so it'll match the Big One!

Ricomari,

Just make sure you glue the visor down and the hinge pins in with epoxy, or they'll come loose for sure! I've got my canopy held on with some red electrical tape I found a Wallymart that matches the monokote perfectly, so I was able to get at mine to 'fix' his pointy lil' head. Now, If I could only find one to fit the baby ulti, i'll be real happy!

I know this has been a long thread but I just am now putting the finishing touches on this jewel. THis thread and the DL50 thread has been the BEST! You guys rock when it comes to sharing ideas. Nothing I have seen in 43 years of modeling.
THis is my first gasser so this has been a real help.

Here is the low down on this one.

DL50 stock with Vess 22A, stock spinner, 16 oz fuel tank on c.g. Lawnboy ashless for breakin.
9411 x 4 ailerons, seal all gaps wiith clear Monokote
8411 x 2 elevators sealed all gaps
8611 rudder
9202 on throttle
Carbon fiber pushrods w/titanium ends and ball links, elev & rud
Turnbuckles on ailrons w/ ball links.
2-1500 mil 6v NoBs NiMh packs and MPI hd switches for receiver, 1-1500 mil 4.8 NiMh pack for ignition MPI hd switch.
PCM receiver
AUW 15lbs 1 oz.

Mods made:
added c.fiber to straight side of wing doubler and 1/32 ply to the angled edge
added c.fiber to bottom of landing gear per
used aluminum angle w/1/8" ply backing and blind nuts for cowl attachment
replaced all of the pushrod hardware.
Robart hinge points glued in with urethane glue
Glued ply doubler to outside of wheel pants to secure axle. Just used pant screws to hold assembly together. Done this on many
other setups and never had a problem

Looking forward to cranking it up as soon as the weather breaks.

Wayne

Lemme See

I'll bet my next paycheck it has two wings, it's covered with red/white/blue covering, it has the ability to seriously hook whoever flies it on biplanes and becomes the most popular plane you own and you'll wanna spend lots of time flying it

Could it possibly be the GP Ultimate????

Just kidding......

Cleared the decks and began my Ultimate assembly. Lord, do I have wrinkles to iron out!

First order of business was to reenforce the wing connectors. I zipped 1/8" slots just inside the ply on the stock blocks with a table saw and used windsurfer batten fiberglass with flocked glass added to the epoxy to bed them in the slots.

What is the best choice for a throttle servo for the 160?

I decided to go with 1 HITHS5955S on the rudder and 2 HITHS5955S on the elevator and 4 HITHS5645S on the ailerons.

Boy it was an expensive little box of goodies... [:-][X(][:-]

I also ordered the new Futaba 7ch 2.4GHz radio. It came with 4/3152 servos. I intend to use this radio with the 160. I will use the servos for something else.

Sorry I should have mentioned that I have a dl50 for the 160.

A pair of 5955's is way overkill for the elevator. A pair of the 5645's would still be overkill and a bit lighter on the budget.

You'd be OK with any quality, fast, BB servo for the throttle. A lot of people recommend a MG Digital BB servo for throttle claiming vibration will kill anything less. It's all what you're comfortable with. I'd stay away from cheap non BB standards and mini or micro servos though.

You're going to absolutely love the combo you've chosen. I'm flying with the DA and it's awesome.

i'm using the older 5645 hitecs on elev and aileron, and 5955TG's on the rudder, all on 6v. Plenty of torque and gobs of speed. I think I've got a futaba 3001 on the throttle, but i'd have to look to make sure. No real load on the throttle servo, just use something reliable. so far, that futaba has worked without a bit of complaint, and before I get warned about using a non-mg servo for the throttle, I've also got a fiber optic kill switch on the ignition. Now those things are nice!

Servo City is having a sale on Hitec 5985 for $63. I ordered seven of them and will be ordering the Ultimate late next week.

I would prefer to use the Dubro style control arms using thread bolts. Do the control surfaces have mounting blocks to be able to use them or are they only set up to use the control arms that come with the plane?

I just replaced the year and a half old 5945s in the tail (gear slop) with 5955TGs , overkill, but I'll not have to replace them again.
Titanium gears... no more slop !
Troy Built Models has them for $89.00

$.02,

Jim

Fishdeth, how many flights (approx) did you put on the 5945s before signs of slop?

Greathobbies sold the 5955TGs to me for $95CAN and $48CAN for the 5645S

BTW I just saw your ulti vid on youtube. AWSOME! I can't wait!!

thats what I used on the tailfeathers, but kept the GP stuff on the ailerons. Yes, if i'm remembering correctly, the tail surfaces have blocks in 'em.
