Oh Thanks F/D thats just what I wanted to see... The biggest plane I've ever flown is the Groove, which is 6 inches smaller then your S/A Edge... and all my flying has been at 6000 feet above sea level. I here I'm in for a pleasent surprise flying at sea level Hope I can find a mentor to help me get started when I get down there!

Thanks again for the pic

LOTS of mentors.
Everybody helps everybody... that's what is so great about this hobby.
Someone will help you and you will help someone with less experience.

Where abouts are you moving in Fla ?

whats the deal on the blue ca hinges, are they just thicker, or is it a different material type?

Does anybody have any experience with the trick of using a soft #2 pencil to put a line across the hinge, that is supposed to keep the CA from saturating the hinge material in the gap?

And... whats chances of seeing some pictures of Ulti's with their owners in the pic, for some size prospective! Plus we'd get to see all those ear to ear grins!

BP

The blue hinges from www.radiosouthrc.com are actually a bit thinner but the center layer is far superior. The flex CA doesn't need any pencil lead to stay flexable. (not sure whether the pencil thing works on other hinges or not).

How's this for size comparison ?

Jim

Oh man, that pic left me shaken...yikes,

Just kidding, you guys that are just getting this thing together that have not seen it up close are finding out just how big this bad boy really is. But it flies fairly lite....

Punta Gorda, I inherited [&o] a place down there. Gonna start my new/second career as a nurse down there.

Yes, we all do seem very willing to teach, and it will make me much more comfortable to have someone watch over my shoulder as I put this pup together and get a couple flights in. Although I been building for a very long time and really pride myself in that area.

Your hinge work looks exemplary! I guess I'll order a bag of the 1/4 scale hinges for mine. Nothing but the best for this bird

Bubba, I just have a gut feeling that once I get started on this giant scale stuff I'm gonna really like it. Problem is, the prices seem to go up proportional to the overall wing area

Thanks so very much for the warm welcome!

GUY'S!! My Ultimate is going to have a little brother!!! .. well, almost. The LHS that I keep in business called and told me that my GP Super Skybolt is in, so I went over and picked it up this am along with a new Saito 100 to pull it along. I can hardly wait till I can get started on it. I put the box down in front of my Ultimate and I distinctly heard a gutteral growl...[X(]

I used the pencil trick on the provided hinge material and it seems to be holding up really well. I sorta deviated from the hinge size..I made them much larger than required...I had to buy some more of the GP hinge material to have enough though.

Ifly,

That's exact what my WH Ultimate did the day I sat the Gp Ultimate next to it. they turned and faced each other, the Gp moved forward and the WH turned and flew away and I swear I heard it wimpering.

Then one day the WH turned it's tail to me when I went to fly it and that's when I said enough and sold it. I hate it when planes bicker with each other

By all means if you start a thread on the Skybolt, let me know. I'm somewhat interested in it. The problem is I have 3 more ahead of it

Guys,
Take a look at this pic.
I didn't notice before gluing in the nylon tail wheel bushing that it seems to have a bottom to it ???
Is my TW inserted all the way / far enough ?
And... boy... that tail wheel is having a tough time supporting an empty fuselage !!!

Thanks,

Jim

Oh, one more thing.
Here's a pic of the instrument panel from a full scale Ultimate I found online somewhere.
Thought some might like to resize it and use it in their model like I intend to instead of the lame decal supplied with the decal sheet.

Actually, here is the post itself

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=3532024

Oh yea, get rid of the wheel itself. It will go flat the minute you get weight into the plane. I used a Dubro 1 inch wheel, at least I think it's one inch

Hey FD!

Boy that tail wheel tire is LAME! I read the other reports that the foam was collapsing under the weight, but a picture IS worth a thousand words :-) Guess I'll pick up the carbon tail wheel assy and a nicer rubber Dubro tire for it.

Thanks for posting the instrument panel picture FD. I have a friend who's a wizard with photoshop. I'll pass it off to him and see what he can do with it!

What a great thread... I too have been building a 'build file' in a word doc with all the little tidbits, like taping the crystal in, and the NoBS battery page. Just great to learn from all the other building experiences! Thanks to all for contributing!

I'm CURRENTLY using a 1 1/4" Dubro on a Sullivan Heavy Duty bracket, 4-40 tiller arm like my original post. The stock tailwheel wire, even with a better tire, wouldn't stand up to much punishment.

Although I doubted it initially, I've found the Sullivan to be really a good setup...just modify the tiller method, and it's a good, coil-spring setup that is VERY durable. I tend to make "tail first" landings, so my gear gets hit pretty good.

BTW - for any interested...... the original STOCK GP CA RUDDER hinges are now cracking, failing, the lowest one first. Will have to replace with the flat hinges in a few flights, no doubt.
All ya'll that have having good luck with CA hinges on this airplane..... Congrats!!

Wish I would have had the same "luck"....

I'm thinking whether or not to size up this pic for the Ulti like I did on the Edge 540

Flyfish, PM me with your E-mail addy and I'll gather up all my Red Bull decal files and shoot them to you.

Guys,

I been following this thread for quite some time and since you are all pretty helpful, could some of you look at the thread I started in the RC radio forum. There has only been one response, although a good one.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4423574/tm.htm

Sorry for posting this in this thread, but I don't want to lose a plane.

Thanks

Jim - heck of a good checklist.

A suggestion - I have learned from my old "pattern" days.... buy some 1/32" AC (hard) ply...it's pretty cheap... cut little rectangles the size of the servo mounting ears... glue them ON TOP OF the light ply servo mounts wherever they are. THEN drill your servo mounting holes, install screw, remove screw, then saturate with thin CA.

After well-cured, when you install the servos == WITH == brass rivets properly oriented (BTDT - we all have), the rivet flange will NOT compress the 1/32" hard ply, and the screw will bite better with the lamination of the ply to lite ply.

This is one of those "keeper" ideas; try it.... you will see the difference. BTW - this also helps reduce servo mounting screw LOOSENING which occurs over time when the lite ply sub-base compresses under repeated pounding. Believe me - this happens.

Also - if you are not yet using them - buy the hex head #2 "servo mounting screws" available from various places. BUT - put #2 nylon flat washers UNDER the integral flat washer on the hex head. This broadens contact against the grommet surface, and acts like a lock washer (yes, don't know why) against the underside of the servo screw head.

(You may PayPal a donation for these PRICELESS hints..... )

Stock tailwheel and mains [:'(] ....file 13 all three and put on sullivan lightweights.

I just did a "walk-a-round" of my Ultimate and also had a close friend of mine do the same after me and believe me, he can pick fly crap out of a can of black pepper with boxing gloves on and neither of us found anything to be of problem. So far, the CA hinges are doing just fine, but as in an earlier post, I cut the hinges larger than called for in the manual.
