Chief Aircraft sells a bracket for the BME, which I assume uses the stock bolt locations. I like info on the DA, but will it be an easy mount ? Will it need new holes taped or stand offs ? Any info on the mounting is appreciated !
This is the Ford Chevy thing.....Chevy IS better than Ford LOL

Default Chevy is Better than Ford

Chevy says; "Longest lasting trucks on the road"

Ford says; "Best selling trucks on the road"

Fords claim is statistically right!

Fords wear out so fast the dumb Ford owners keep buying Fords and wearing them out again.

Or maybe Ford owners realize they should have bought a Chevy and sell the Ford to an ignorant buyer.

No wonder they are the best selling trucks on the road.

I'll stick with my pretty '86 Chevy myself.

(I really do like the Ford F350 series though)

So really my point is meant to be funny.

GET THE DA!!

Cheers

Since were having fun...

Chevy's are for those who do not use them day in and day out... Been here done this several times through the years with my contracting business... Never again will I invest in a Chevrolet... Been bit way to hard much to often with the Chevy's. Chevy trucks are built for week-end warriors... Ford sales more trucks simply because they hold up better long term and serious users/owners come back for more.

Back on the 3W, DA, BME aircraft engine thing...

This is really a silly, these are all very good products. I own numerous examples of all of them. One is no better than the other IMO... The only deciding factor might be a weight consideration if it applies to your use, that said BME offers the lightest 100cc class available presently. DA and 3W weigh nearly the same in the current offerings of 100-150cc engines. None of these engine manufacturer's offer the perfect engine, components and or accessories, something will always fail...

I know you have an open mind Michael--so consider this situation--
In choosing an older truck to redo as a hot rod - the older Chevs are easier and cheaper to do -
Parts cheaper - engines more responsive to rework - prices overall much lower and nationally -this is the typical case.
This is historic data.
I have done 460 Fords - 350 Chevs -on and on and the Chevs always ended up better toys -for me.
Having said that -- my current model airplane hauler is a Volvo wagon with a Mustang 5 litre HO engine and trans--
Why? - well it all fits together better -than a Chev in that car.
So what's the point?
Simply that your basis for evaluating an engine may mean little to someone else-- who has a different criteria.
IE-- My criteria for buying a model airplane engine may be different than yours - simply because --I use it differently.
Which of us is correct in assessing which is the best engine?
In some of my models the only engine which will fit - is the one I selected!
So far it is all working - very well --- for me

there are a lot of em --Ross Converse conversions -
It is the "perfect " model hauler .
for me.
I gues my 265 Vette engine in an Austin Healy 100 was also a sicko setup?
It was a quicko setup, at any rate.
very quicko--(2150 lbs)

Hi Dick

The Volvo sounds interesting... Fords 5.0 Litre HO is an excellent engine. I'll bet she really hauls the bacon. You must not have many problems with smog issues in Utah...

I grew up in the hot rod fraternity my father and uncles were well versed and it rubbed off on me, I've built many and shoe horned engines in lots of them, still play with them on occasion. Spent many years racing professionally and building engines, big engines. Intimately familiar with Blown alcohol/nitro 10 Litre Arias and such...

I use a 98 Ford E250 Van with a 5.7 litre that I retired from the work fleet to move my models and trailer around nearly 200K and still never misses a beat... Mileage is very reasonable as well.

There is also historical data that suggests Ford truck's out work and outlast Chevy's...

I'd have to agree on the aftermarket parts and common street knowledge related to hot rodding Chevy's verses Ford. However those in the know can make a Ford run and run very well. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I have built several 460 that put 454's to shame for hauling, big bore short stroke works too... I have a Chevy BB that started life as a 454-LS7 in my squirt boat that does an honest [NO BS] 103mph in a 18-1/2' semi vee hull. Yea I know everyone has a fast boat but not everyone can back it up...

I'll agree with your analogy of engine choice based on installation/model criteria. This is always a major player on the small stuff and even some of the 1/3 scale stuff and bigger occasionally.

Ah ha ! another crazy!
The engine in my AH 100 was originally slated for a Crackerbox class boat - built by Don West of American Fork Utah - his boat Playboy was a real contender -
The list could go on - -I ran a Jimmy blower on an Olds on the street when I was 18 --that was a real blast - it constantly blasted pistons - but it ran hard -then a ford/Chev - gasser trophy winner -
I screw around with the two strokes now - they are fun - the exhaust systems I have been using really wake em up -
DA is also playing with GOOD exhaust systems -- but it will be a while -I am sure -- before this stuff catches on --to the public in general -
My 5.0 Volvo passes emissions legally! The engine is just a tuned HO.
you plug in the car vin - hit v8- enter - and it reads out a very nice - low emission printout.
I have a single 2.5 " exhaust inc a cat converter - but the sound is still, unmistakable --
In Cal I think they have a emission requirement also - for all aftermarket stuff-
i sure hope some tree hugger does not decide our models are too nasty for the enviroment.
can you imagine trying to pass an emissions check on a tuned exhaust two stroker?

OK OK Chevy Ford, heh who cares , lets talk planes! I just picked up my Hanger 9 SU-31 today, whoops its sweet, but have not purchased a motor yet. So D.A. or BME 102 is my choice as I see it. Anyone who has either of these fine motors can ya give some advice on the mounting, standoffs, did ya need to drill new holes (I like easy) ..........

Like people have said earlier, The BME is lighter, but not as much power. The DA would probably be your best bet considering the fact that you will need that nose weight anyway. You would have to add weight to the BME to make the cg right, but because it has less power than the DA, the performance wouldn't be as good. No matter what engine you chose, you will be happy, I just think you would like the DA better. And whatever you do, DO NOT put a Zenoah GT-80 on it. Good Luck

Here in California, you would have a hard time convincing a smog Tech this engine swap was viable, even properly equipped. Most likely if allowed the the vehicle would have to have all the original smog equipment as shipped from the OEM, but installing a V8 would be a no-no in any event I believe.. If the vehicle is more than 25 years old smog certs are not required and anything goes...

You know Lake Tahoe banned the use of two-stroke engines. Anything is possible here in the eco state...

Cracker Box boats are something else... What a ride!!!

Ahh , the good old days of Hot Rodding. I have hard time relating relating to the rice burners being hot rodded in todays world. An Olds with a GMC blower? Dick your showing age... I was two years old in "60"...

Dick your exhaust systems are legendary....

On the H9 Sukhoi engine dilemma:

This is an exceptional example of an ARF Aerobat, kudos to Mike McConville and H9. Very well built and engineered, IMO. Not to mention good looking [I have always thought they were UGLY].

Been here recently, presently setting up two models side by side. My son decided RC models were more intriguing than video games and has yet to realize girls are too. One model is set-up with Taurus's 5.7ci single and the second model is rigged with a 3W100-B2-SS light-weight [my son's, he decided he is the 3W kid this is the second model we've rigged with a 3W for him]. Both engines are nearly identical in weight less mufflers [2 ozs. plus to the 5.7]. The engines are within 1/4" of each other for firewall offset to the prop-hub spacer. Neither required engine spacing or spacers. With the BME or the DA you may need spacer's, as they are shorter. However the cowl of the Sukhoi of can be moved back without issue quite far.

You'll have to knock out the existing 1/4" blind nuts and relocate them to accommodate the engine you choose to use without doubt. H9 includes a would adapter/spacer to use a Zenoah engine but I don't think it will help with either the BME or DA.

The Sukhoi - I may yet put one together - The real problem for me is that the fuselage -tho very pretty is much heavier in the aft end - than the CAP.
I did some quick paperwork -which said a heavy engine is reqd to balance -
that is not what I wanted -
If I do one - I will strip the belly pan - and redo all of that -
My recent 33% H9 models are 22-23 lbs ready to fly - with NO carbon pieces and NO Duralites -
with the 80 single on tuned setup - they are VTO - really .
Getting overkill power was never the problem - -The wing loading tho needs to 30 oz or less- for best snap recovery and low speed flippity flop stuff - at our altitude.
You will end up probably at 25 lbs plus - and it will work just great -at sea level.
It will also fly most stuff very well here -It's the 2-3 lb difference that makes stuff here feel like it was at sealevel.
1960 - lets see -I just got out of the army - had a TR3 A - modified -to B engine

Info from Don's Hobby web page states the DA 100 is very very tite fit. Tons of power though, hints at being to much (is there ever to much? ) Looks like the BME 102 is going to be my powerplant of choice.

I put a 3W 100 in mine hovers at 6 clicks above an idle. Take off go to knife edge as soon as wing will clear runway at 1/4 throttle
with the heavier 3W I had to add just 6oz of tail weight to get the aft CG needed for 3D fight . With the BME or the DA you are looking at adding 1 to 2lbs of lead in the nose or moving all radio equipment as far forward as possible plus having the fuel tank forward of the CG or wing tube my tank is right over the CG location This all boils down to persanal preference do you want a Chevy or a Ford? After all you are in the drivers seat when it is all over and done with!!!!

Default cowl

Do you have to cut the cowl a lot more with the DA. ie. spark plug caps?

Yes, according to Don's Hobbies. But I'v yet to see a post from a person here who states they have a DA 100 in there Su-31. I would like to hear from guys who have both mounted either a BME 102 or DA 100 just to see what problems if any were encountered.

The DA 100 is the same width as the 3W 100 and yes you have to slot both sides of the cowl for the plug leads. Took me only 2 minutes extra to acomplish this task for my 3W the bottom of this cowl has to be opened up no matter what Engine you use. Food for thought (Take Offs are!! optional Landing aren't!!!!)
