Default Hovering The Magic 3D

Yes, i have a Modle Tech Magic 3D and i can do anything i want, BUT, i have trouble trying to get it to hover, it only holds for a few seconds and snaps. Is there Certin CG im supposed to be useing or what? ANY TIPS WILL HELP! It has a 53 Magnum with a 11-7 wooden prop, i also have a 12-4 for it but only used it once. Im useing a Airtronic's RD 6000 and i have mixing abilities but i do not know what to put in for mixing, or if they are even needed?

Default Magnum 53?

Are you referring to the older 2 stroke Magnum or do you mean the 4 stroke 52?

Mine is still on the board, so I am especially useless in this case just wondering about the engine!

Mine will be pulled by a Magnum 52 4cy.

Keep us posted!

I have my balance waay back at around 5" from LE. It will stay for 30 seconds, and wants to snap out still... I have only flown it 3 times at that balance point so far, so I think I still need to sharpen my thumbs...

I have the Magic with a TT 46 pro spinning an 11x4 APC.Most of the guys around here are using a .40 with a 10x5 APC.My opinion, the Magnum 53 will be a little overkill for this plane. The guys with the 40 motors can hover theirs better than I can with my 46.And I can hover it pretty good.

Default Change the prop...

Hello,

I can't talk for the Magic, but I have a Cougar 2000 and the setup for hovering is fairly similar. I would suggest:

1. Laterally Balance the model, ie hold the prop nut/spinner and tail, and see if one wing drops.

2. Make sure you have 2-3 degrees of side thrust on the engine, as it helps to stop the left wing dropping in the hover

3. Get the CG to be at the rear of the recommended limit.

4. Swap the 11x7 that you've got for the 12x4. The 11x7 is a general sports prop, whilst the 12x4 is a funfly prop, and much easier to hover with.

5. Set your throws so they're quite high, but still comfortable and have a little expo dialled in.

This should make it alot easier, but it still needs practise

My Magic is with a 40fp and it hovers great. I have it balanced some where between 4.5" and 5". The Magic's firewall thrust lines are designed around the 40FP (check their manual). Keep the plane as light as possible...and put some expo to smoothen out the center sticks...over control is a problem.

Regards
Marcus

Practise. As anyone can tell you practise is the best solution. My magic has an OS 46fx. It hovered fine at first but was real twitchy and I had a hard time. I thought it was because I was just starting out and also that I had heard the .40 size planes were harder to hover than big stuff. After a lot of practise and moving the CG back so that when inverted it flys same as upright with no down or up needed, I can now hover for as long as I want. Tail touches are regular occurences when I'm at the field. It's a lot of fun. It's hard to say which is the culprit but when I moved the CG back to where it is now, I was able to back it down a whole lot better. Could be the CG, or could be the Practise. Who cares, I can do it now and that's what matters. Good luck

Hi,
I have a Magic set up similarly to yours==YS 53, 12-8 Scimitar prop==weighs 3lb. 15oz. Do not know where it balances- just added weight in the tail until it flew correctly and does most 3D well. However, I find that most magic flyers gloss over the assembly instructions and neglect to put in the required downthrust and right thrust which is necessary to prevent the model from toppling to the right and/or backwards during hover!
Like yourself, the radio is an Airtronics RD6000, and no mixing is
necessary.

Default Magic

Have you ever thought about flying a straight line to trim the Magic? I doubt that you have because I've seen you fly that plane Maybe a little less showboating and concentrate on letting the plane actually fly with the wings that came with it.

C.G @ 4.75"
Forget the 11x7 and try an apc 12.25 x3.75.

Throws all you can get.

Default Im guilty also

My magic is a great flying plane. 3 1/2 lbs with a Rossi 45 and mini pipe. I did only glance threw the instructions and I have no right thrust or down in the mounts. I can get her to hover for about 10 sec and burp the throttle and she begins to torque roll. But the plane is very twitchy in a hover and does try to fall on her back or snap left. But if you havent tried it, my magic does a great, slow elevator all the way to the deck and a spot landing and is stable doing it. I will try the offset on the mounts and hopefully that will help me with the hovering time issue. Have a good one, BAD ANDY

Just keep working on it, don't give up and you'll get it.

Default Magic??

Can anyone get there magic to do a waterfall? I can do just about (some what) all the 3-D maneuvers except the waterfall! I hate to have to add more weight to the tail, I already have about 2 oz on the tail. It's has been a great airplane.. RB

I got mine to do a pretty neat looking watrfall a couple days ago. You have got to have it laterally balanced, otherwise, youre gonna have a heck of a time keeping it straight...
