RE: Extreme Flight RC Yak 54 - 74 inch!
If I pay 550.00 for an engine it will be for a 50cc. It would make a good match, but the line has to be drawn for me at spending considerably less that required to outfit a 50cc class plane.

Nothing wrong with that perspective... but others might really want this size plane... maybe it will be their "flagship".
They may not have the capability of toting a 50cc plane around, nor want to pay for the top dollar for stronger servos.
But in perspective... guys are paying:
$420 for a YS 140 Sport
$640 for a YS 160DZ
$400 for a Saito 1.80
$500 for a Saito 2.20
Sure $550 can buy a 50cc engine... but a 50cc engine would ruin this airplane.
There are les expensive options for gas outfitting this plane, and fine ones at that... the Brillelli 36 and 46 to be sure...
But there is nothing wrong with the ultra light ZDZ 40... their premium price gets you the best power:weight ratio... is it worth it? to some yes, to others no.

Gas is definetly a lot more economically sensible.
I did happen to pick up the Saito 180 for $370 though. You may find that calling in and ordering may yield lower prices as most are only allowed to advertise a fixed low price.
I got my long airwild arms in. Only need to double check the balance on the prop and spinner as the engine is still rough.May be just the way the Saito is though? Im not really trusting my balancer right now though and will use another's for reasurance.
I also need somebody else at the field to hold the plane down while I adjust the top end.Tried it and the whole stand started to taxi away I have to say the Saito is putting out some good power.

Gas is definetly a good choice. I know with gas you can use a smaller tank, but you also need to carry a Ignition Battery,Ignition Module, another switch,as well as a onboard kill switch and some use a servo for the choke. So I think it kinda evens out for using the smaller tank for fuel.
So for now I'll use my OS 160 until I have the extra cash or until the OS dies. I'd love to see a vid with the B46 in this Yak and the B36 is it?
Well anyway..Happy Easter to All!!

For me the OS 160 is perfect. It's not that expensive at $299, it's light, it is very happy on 5% ($11/gallon) which when tuned right it consumes very little, and it's got plenty of power. With an APC 18 X 6W, it litteraly doesn't slow down on un upline as long as you can see it. For me it's the winner for this airplane.

I went with the o.s.1.60 to save the weight so I could put on a simple smoke system. I hope to have it done this week to see how mutch extra weight it coust me.

Smoke
1-1 1/2 pounds depending on your tanks size . I went with an 8oz so that puts me in at 1pound over my 11pound goal. Im leaving it off for now.

Did you use a pump or crank case presure to push the oil? I'm useing the crank case and an 8oz. tank. How long does the smoke oil last? Here is a pic . of my setup. It is the same setup as seen on RCDon.com.

Dose anyone use a JR 9x
If so what channel have you put your ailerons on
I noticed that when i put the ailerons to the left you had less movement then when you push it to the right
Yes all my atv s are at 100% left and right for both servos
the only way to sort it out was to use different rates for left and right stick 35% right ailerons 55 left ailerons

I'm 99% positive it's ch.1 and 7 with the left aileron plugged into 7. I run my travels all the way up to 150% then lesson them with the dual rates. Make sure your servos are centered as well as your Ailerons. Make sure where your link that connects to the aileron horn is right over the hingeline..

Are any of you that are using an O.S. 160 using a Perry pump on it or is it just unnecessary?

If you are not running the tank directly behind the firewall (e.g. short feed line) you should run a pump. PS. take the needle assembly off the motor and mount it on the engine box for improved tuning and a "bubbleless clunk" is recommended (however I don't run this and haven't had any problem).

I am using a gasser on this plane (which has a pump carb) BUT I use the 160FX in a pattern plane with a Perry pump.

So your pattern plane must have the fuel tank on the center of gravity?

Yes . . as in the pic.

Okay, sorry.... I ask too many questions . If I have a couple of extra inches in my supply line should I remove it to improve fuel flow or is it mostly determined by tank position? This is assuming I have my tank in the stock position behind the engine and don't have a pump.

I would only leave enough extra fuel tube to allow for any movement in flight . . Using pressure from the Crankcase or muffler should be OK . . Just check for leaning out in long verticals BEFORE you try low hovering ;-)
Jeff
PS. The Perry (VP30 I think) is still a better method in my opinion . . very reliable feed, and tuning (once set - which is easy) is a breeze.

Thanks for the info Jeff. It's my first 1.60. I fired it up last week and was impressed with the quality and ease of operation. I even used a chicken stick. Runs better than any glow engine I own and on 10% to boot! Just need some good weather to go and test fly it.

I only adjust the main needle when I fly at other fields with different elevation, otherwise never touch it at all. Back it off until you hear the revs noticeably drop, then edge it back until it breaks into a nice 2 stroke note. No need to screw the needle to get every last bit out of it . . it's just not necessary. You are hard pressed to notice the difference in the air, and the consistancy and reliablility is better.

I am putting my ZDZ40 RV-L into mine it is only 6 oz. heavier than the ZDZf3A and thats nothing on a plane with this wing area!! I can easily shave that weight here and there. It will be a rocket and still float just fine!! When I am done I will post a vid to show any naysayers how well it performs with this setup.

Sure $550 can buy a 50cc engine... but a 50cc engine would ruin this airplane.

Heck now I want to put my DA on it just to show ya how well it 'would' work!
