I have one almost ready to fly. If I had it to do again I would not buy this plane for the following reasons: The airfoil is not symmetrical / there is inadequate space in the fuselage for the receiver and battery / the front dowel interferes with the tank/ the covering material is not of good quality/ the CA hinges were partially glued into one surface and more than half pulled out and had to be replaced. I have long been a fan of the Model Tech planes and own two others now and have had several others in the past. This plane is not their best effort. You may want to look at the Magic Extra version or a Hanger 9 Pizazz which is a much better flying plane. Also the Sig Somethin' Extra is a good plane. The ARF version of the Dazzler from Great Planes is good however I prefer the built up one since the ARF has an ABS turtle deck which I don't personally care for plus it is heavier. There are several comments here at RC Universe concerning the plane not being a good 3D machine.

I bought a magic 3d from a guy at my club. Right after I gave him the money for the plane we went out and flew it. On approach the vertical stab seperated and the plane crashed. There was damage to the fuselage and to the left wing. When I tore off the covering to check out the wing I found that most of the wing ribs had broke. I also saw that a bunch of places in the wing weren't glued very well. There was only a few small dabs of epoxy on all the joints in the wing. I was very disappointed in the quality of work in this ARF. After I beefed up the joints and recovered it I tood her for a test flight. She flew great and has been ever since. I'm happy with the way the plane flies but it could have been built better.

Myself and a friend have a couple of the original Magic's and we have been ragging them out for well over a year now and they have been fine, the only exception is that I added flying wires to the stab, his is still stock. They 3D pretty good but are not very stable planes,They are not as rock sloid as a Morris plane, etc, but wadda ya want for $99.00!!this plane help me learn to hover and other mild 3D stuff.Yes the stab is weak without wires, but this plane is not meant to fly at mid to high speed,it is stricktly a slow flying plane. The flat bottom air foil is awesome in the wind,it's like flying a radio controlled kite.I also have a Pizzaz and a Somethin Extra, and while they are much more stable than the Magic, the Magic is a whole lotta fun,and way lighter. You have to get conventional flying out of your mind when flying the Magic and you will have a great time.Forget all that peeling covering and gluing etc,put it together Friday night and fly it Saturday morning.JMO,Mike

Every ARF i have ever seen has some flaws. Even the Something Extra (which i love by the way) has notoriously weak landing gear mount, questionable Canopy attachment, and the worst tail wheel in the history of model avaition!
But i think every pilot should have one of them! i would buy another in a heart beat!
Same thing with the magic; the wing is weird, the landing gear sucks, but it is a blast to fly! i have 9 good planes ready to fly but guess which one i fly every weekend? Yup the old beat up trusty Magic. My Top cap, SE, Fun 51... all gathering dust. I know it isn't perfect, but to me and many others there is something special about this plane. I would buy another in a heart beat.
Excap,
There are some tricks to getting the radio stuff to fit. the best i have heard of so far is attaching the battery to the wing over the servos. That makes more space in front of the servo tray for the reciver. The Hitec 555 fits nicely there. A couple others i heard of placed the rudder servo down the fuselage to redistribute weight. Also creates more space in the radio compartment.
The plastic landing gear clips on mine all cracked and the landing gear fell off in flight, never found it, might be a good idea to stop by the LHS to get some Dubro plastic landing gear straps.
It is certainly a weird and flawed plane, but it might just win you over.
best of luck,

Thanks to this forum I have mine setup with Webra.32, AAA 500Ma battery pack mini servos and it is a real blast.
I even managed to loose a wheel during its first flight( was my fault), and it landed perfectly, dead stick, like an RC kite.
Flew it again today at lunch time and had a great time again, I think I am going to fly that one as long as I can.
Next mod will be the tail wires and a mouse can.
Keep it lite

I have had a magic that i have just dogged out with no problems at all. I did add the flying wires to support the tail, but for the price it is a great 3D trainer, just do not put a brick on the front of it and it's an awesome bird, stick with a .46Fx or something comparable. just my .02 1/2 cents. I struggled with mine for a while, but now its pretty easy. CG is at 5 1/4. Very slight amount of right thrust, and about 1 degree of down thrust. Lateral balance is important too. Hovers pretty easy once i got the hang of it. For me the trick was getting used to the rudder. Only tiny nudges necisary. 6 volt battery on standard servos or faster servos seems to help.

I've had my Magic about a month now, and so far have burned about 4 gallons of fuel flying it...it's a blast, as long as you remember the kind of plane it is. TT46 with a 12.25x3.75 APC prop pulls it up fairly well, even at 4500' altitude. I didn't mount the battery in the wing, instead I made a crude tray right above the rear servo, and the flat battery sits in there nicely. Right now it's balanced a little more than 5" back of the leading edge. Forget about knife edge...it will not do it without a struggle. A little down thrust plus a little right thrust works good on this one. Get used to carrying to the runway if there is more than a 5 mph crosswind, the lack of tail wheel makes it difficult. Of course, you REALLY don't need a runway, it'll take off in about 3 feet
Really weird thing last weekend...was hovering about 20 feet off the deck when it ran out of fuel...nosed in to the dirt, broke the motor mount, and NOTHING ELSE (???) I've had mild landings tear out the landing gear blocks!!! Go figure...

Well this is how I did it, will try this weekend to see how well it works

I think right thrust is not so important with this plane because you have no vertical stab. You can dial in a little right trim to compensate for the spiraling wind from the prop, and the plane won't know the difference.
For down thrust, maybe it is easier because it gives the plane a tendancy to fall to the gear so you end up not having to push the stick down as much so in a way you only have to deal with left, right and up while hovering, or maybe it directs the force thru the center of mass better?
I would imagine that anyone who has mastered the art can fly your plane for a few seconds and be able to tell what needs to be tweeked, but i am not that person.
Its an excelent question though, maybe someone more knowegable can shed some light on it.
