Hey. I have been away from the hobby seriously for a few years and am interested in making a small investment to get back in to flying. I currently fly an ultrasport 40 and am using an old conquest radio. I am very board with the plane and obviously need to upgrade my equipment. 3d flying and somewhat of a programmable radio have peeked my interest.
This is what I am looking at:
Funtana x100
Saito 125
Hitec Optic 6 (with adequate torque servo's for the application)
I am trying to keep the cost down, hence the cheaper radio. I was also looking at the UCanDo 90, but think this is a very ugly plane! Can someone please offer me some advice on what I have chosen to buy? Keep in mind I am trying to get back in to the hobby as cheap as possible so my wife won't leave me!! The only thing that I am really worried about is the radio. Is it capable enough for this plane? Are the mixes adequate for 3D flying? I am not really sure when you would use the mixes during flight being so new to 3d flight. Some insight on mixes (in knife edge flight for example) would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!!

I have two optic 6's and they both work great. They are my main radios, one is for me and one is for my dad. Has plenty of programable features for aerobatic 4 channel planes. The only complaint is the handle keeps breaking. I sent it back to replace the case and and got it back about 4 days later (great product support!) with a new case. Handle broke again 3 weeks later. I just decided to epoxy it back together and haven't had any problems since
.
I myself don't have the X100 but do have the X50. I must give my complimants to the plane as it flys great, once setup right. I am sure the X100 would fly even better.

The saito 125 will be ok for the funtana but if you want real fun then get the saito 1.50 or 1.80. As for the radio the optic 6 is good but since the Funtanax100 has dual elevator servos(I think) you will need something like the Futaba 9CAP which you can get for $250 at www.servocity.com. I had the U CAN DO 3D 46 and I loved it. Even though I have never flown a funtanaX100(I have seen them fly) I would recomend the U Can Do as your first 3D plane.

The plane and engine are good but I would go with a different radio.
I would probably go with this for a 6 channel, only $10 more than the Hitec.
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...odID=JRP6654**
OR go with the 7 channel spektrum
http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...ProdID=SPM2710
One thing you might want to consider is to make sure if you want to run dual elevator servos on separate channels the radio has the correct mix built in so the trim tab operates on both halves. Also there is the 2.4Gig revolution about to take place so you may want to go with a 2.4G from the beginning.
I would compare the radios and make sure you are getting the most for your money. I would go with the 6ch JR at a minimum, and skip the Hitec, I just don't think the quality is there, I would say JR and Futaba are in a higher class than Hitec.

You'll want a radio that is capable of mixing dual elevator servos. I don't know if the Hitec radio you mentioned will do that, but it would be a REALLY smart thing for you to check into that radio BEFORE you buy it.
I used a JR652 for many many years, and it worked great. It is a 6ch programmable radio. The only problem was, when I got into bigger planes trhat had dual elevator servos, it wouldn't mix them properly. I could run a programable mix, but only the master servo would respond to the trim inputs from the transmitter. The slave servo just sat there. I had to use a JR Matchbox to get the job done. Tried the servo reversers, but they never work right. Always get differential throws with those reversers.
You'll probably need this fuction sooner or later if your going to get back into the hobby. If I was you, I'd buy a cheap 2-stroke engine and a cheaper plane. Spend your money on the radio or you'll end up tossing it and buying ANOTHER radio next year.
Your getting back into the hobby after a little bit off. But, your on a budget. You're probably rusty unless you've been on the simulator a lot. I wouldn't go for the newest whiz bang 3D plane and hot 4-stroke right outta the box if I was you. Not because you can't handle the planes--not at all. It's because your paying a premium for that Saito 4-stroke and also that H9 plane.
You can get totally cheap 3D planes and 2-stroke engines if your on a budget. Planes and engines are a dime a dozen. Cheap. Airplanes are REALLY cheap if you know what to buy and where to get it. Engines are a bit more of an investment, and I'm a bit picky about what I buy. I buy cheap engines, but I know of a couple different brands that I like and run well. Stick to what ya know works.
But, the thing you should spend the largest amount of cash on right now is a good radio. The radio is an investment you want to make once. Maybe 3 times. Radios are expensive.
I upgraded from my JR652 up to a JR8103 after flying the 652 for like 6yrs. I imagine I'll be flying the 8103 untill it's a dinosaur. It's got all the mixing and programming I'll ever need. Only way I can see myself needing more than the 8103 can offer is a Spektrum system on 2.4Ghz. But right now, the 8103 has tons more programming features than the Spektrum 7. So, I'm waiting a few more years for Spektrum technology to improve and work the bugs out. It'll get cheaper and better in 3 or 5 yrs. Thats when I'll buy my 3rd radio after 12-14yrs in this hobby. Some guys go through radios like glow fuel. I'm not like that. I took my time and found out what I needed to satisfy my type of airframes and style of rigging. Then I bought a nice radio and I'll sit on it for 6 yrs untill technology drastically improves and also drastically gets cheaper.
So, buy a nice radio NOW. Or you'll be buying another one next season or the year after that.
For planes, you can get a ton of stuff.
And Saito engines ain't exactly cheap.
Get a solid 2-stroke in the 100--150 size and THEN find a 60-90 size plane to fit it.

I'd wait about 3 or 5 yrs before I bought the Spektrum technology.. Let it cheapen up a bit and prove itself in the field first.
Buy a JR8103 or a Futaba 9C

See, I wouldn't buy a Spectrum right now if it was me. It's the latest and most expensive radio on the market right now. You should be able to get a nice 72mhz radio for about $250 or less.

UM...The DX-7 is $350 including 4 DIGITAL servos and a RX. If you factor what the servos would cost and the RX, it's a $100 radio. I would get that one. I know there are some good programming options, and I think Dual evevators is one of them.
I fly JR 10X and JR 9303, and I will be converting to 2.4 as soon as I can afford it...and a trailer....and a 40%'r ...and another 35%'r....and ...and
There is a new company which will be making 2.4 G modules for major radios .... I CAN'T WAIT!!!!
BTW...I have seen many giant scale planes flown on this system. The owners can fly without the fear of being shot down by someone tinkering with a lazy bee in the pits. That's comforting when you have 4-8K in the air.

The Optic 6 will definitely handle dual elevator servos (AILV function). These are a great radio except for:
The weak handle mounting (I've given up replacing the cases on mine and HiTec have lost the sales on our last 2 radios because of it - I bought Futaba instead). In fact the case on the Optic6 is quite rubbishy in general.
The Dual rates are only on 2 switches (One for Rudder / Elevator & one for Aileron) - I prefer to have a separate switch for each channel on dual rates.
There are only 2 positions available on the dual rates switch - I prefer 3 settings for 3d - Low, High and Wild. I don't know if any of the other radios mentioned have this but some of the "Top end ones" do.

Hi fellow flyers. I have a 3d airplane, set up with dual elevator servos, with a non computer radio. I refuse to buy a 2.4 GHz radio when my PCM radio is just as good. I believe a plane can be set up and flown just as well with a competent pilot without all those bells and whistles. With everyone going to 2.4, the channels on 72 meg are wide open, with PCM there is no problem with "hits", and a good PCM radio is cheap to purchase new or used! The dual servo elevator can be set up with a right and left hand servos with a 'y' harness. You can even reverse your own servos by reversing the pot and motor leads, and match up the any two servos in your collection if you have a problem with servo throw. I think a lot of this hobby is being lost with people that don't use their brains and just pull out the wallet. I may be old school, but I remember the guys who taught me how to fly, and what they had to learn on. Anyway as long as you are having fun, that's what counts!

Futaba 8FG Super
Best radio and programming for the price, in my opinion. You could find one used if you look around for like 300-350.

off topic of hte radio .. thats almost a question you cant ask here becouse so many pepol are heavy biased like this guy talking abouta 8FG SUPER .. and you wanted a low end cheaper radio clearly hes is correct ..[:-].whatever raido your comfrable with and fits your Budget useage .. try to get something you wont upgrade RIGHT AWAY..
thats IMO ...
but i'd chose DLE 20 over satio 125 if that funtana is big enough .. or vally view RC offers a DLE clone 20cc for 199 i'd rock those motors over that satio if i could
Rember useing a IEBC to save weight ... and you'll only need a 8 ounc tank .. save some weight there ... Keep her light man !!
DX6I seems to be a vary popular entry level computer radio .. and the nock off Orang RX's are rather Cheap ...
but reallly your going to have to research on your own the bias is TOO heavy to ask the question to fellow internet gowers

Hey Zach, why not post your insults to me here, rather than in a PM.
My opinion on the 8FGis mine, and mine alone. It is not bias. And Istand by it.
The 8FGhas outstanding programming, is 14 channels, and very affordable for what it offers. Super easy to setup and program.
Not real sure why you took such offence to my opinion here, But it shows your personallity, kid.
Good luck with your cheap HK crap.

Oh I have no problem doing so !!!
so did you read what he said ????or are you just so thick headed that to you don't understand that a 450 doller radio is NOT budget minded entry level radio .! FACTUAL not a matter of openion ..! I.E this is where your in the wrong...
hey like I siad most of the new'er guys that I personaly see show up to the flying field ,come with DX6I's ,I dont know why but that just what i see .. I agree ithat the DX6I is a easy to use good engry level radio that's not going to devstate your wallet ...... hell if your biased futaba couldn't you of at least said a 7 cap ?
DX6 is what 139 ? and your telling this guy to buy a 450 DOLLER RADIO .. come on man Really ????
YOU ARE BIASED and here is why I'll explain
this is what OP said
“â€I am trying to keep the cost down, hence the cheaper radio. "
In my personal openion you are , just like a horriable car salesman trying to push somthing that you think is cool but this dude doesn't even need or isn't going to use to his fullist .. a good salesman should try to get him into something that matches his needs.. that he clearly stated but you inroged... I.E hey i am a colleage stundent i need a good car thats budget minded ... and your showing this guy a vett when he should be buying a v6 commaro AT THE MOST !!!
yep your that guy... !!
read what the guy said and try to help him out realalstickly you might think that the 8FG SUPER IS a good vavule, that might be so,,, .. but that's vaule in the context of its scale that radio is a higher END radio .. he doesnt need sero match s bus and 14 channals to fly a futana .. maybe one day he will have a 50 cc... hell i still see 50cc guys fly with DX7 and dx6i ..just saying .. but if he was at that point hten a 8FG would be more realistic .... .. but it's out of context of what the guy is asking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and when you use LOGIC the only reason i can think of you would reply with such bull crap is that your Biased ..
and so be it

WAY..
oh and if you worked a hobby shop and you told this guy what your saying here .. do you think later on when he figers things out that he would feel your just trying to sell him top doller and not even lissting to him or do you think he would think you had his best intrest in mind .. ?
to me its black and white .. not a matter of openion ....
to you its a openion thing .. like you Honslty think 8FGSUPER is a budgget radio and you'lll argue that up and down ...
and thats what i just don't understand either your biased or your really well off in money and 450 dollers seems like something on the lower side of radios should cost ..
and dude i didnt tell this guy to use Hobby king i just said that hte Orang RX's are cheap and they work thats all i said dude..

read what the guy said and try to help him out realalstickly you might think that the 8FG SUPER IS a good vavule, that might be so,,, .. but that's vaule in the context of its scale that radio is a higher END radio .. he doesnt need sero match s bus and 14 channals to fly a futana .. maybe one day he will have a 50 cc... hell i still see 50cc guys fly with DX7 and dx6i ..just saying .. but if he was at that point hten a 8FG would be more realistic .... .. but it's out of context of what the guy is asking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and when you use LOGIC the only reason i can think of you would reply with such bull crap is that your Biased ..
and so be it

WAY..
oh and if you worked a hobby shop and you told this guy what your saying here .. do you think later on when he figers things out that he would feel your just trying to sell him top doller and not even lissting to him or do you think he would think you had his best intrest in mind .. ?
to me its black and white .. not a matter of openion ....
to you its a openion thing .. like you Honslty think 8FGSUPER is a budgget radio and you'lll argue that up and down ...
and thats what i just don't understand either your biased or your really well off in money and 450 dollers seems like something on the lower side of radios should cost ..
and dude i didnt tell this guy to use Hobby king i just said that hte Orang RX's are cheap and they work thats all i said dude..
Dont get it twisted
??? a 450 doller radio (Like a Minnesota accent?)
??? not a matter of openion (those are electric doors at the store right?)
??? where your in the wrong
??? hey like I siad most of the new'er guys (Can someone explain this contraction please...)
??? use good engry level radio (I don't like it when my radios get engry)
??? like a horriable car salesman (So he's not from the US)
??? push somthing (for Zach, this almost is okay!)
??? to use to his fullist (reach for the stars man...)
??? clearly stated but you inroged (help!!!)
??? hey i am a colleage stundent (*CLEARLY this is the FARTHEST thing from the truth*)
??? buying a v6 commaro (Is this anAustralian version?)
??? help him out realalstickly (WHAT?)
??? a good vavule (I had a sticky PVC vavule in an old Chevy once)
??? at that point hten a 8FG
*** I have to stop... I simply cannot grab them all.. Whew... I am spent.
SPELL CHECK, SPELL CHECK, SPELL CHECK. Or of course there is always that "school" thing.

ZacharyR,s suggestion of getting a large 3d profile foamie from rcfactory is the best advise on here if your serious about learning 3d and specially so if you are on a budget.
Sure a 3dhs slick will 3d but a $1000 dollars plus setup will seriously slow down your learning curve by the fact you cannot afford to crash that setup, and crashings part of learning 3d. If you are on a budget what are you gonni do if you do crash your 30cc plane, can you afford to replace it straight away?. foamies are long lasting and even when they are worn out they are cheaply replaced.
Save for your 30cc (go straight to a 50cc if you can) for next year, get a foamie for this year.
I fought against owning a foamie for ages, but they really are the best 3d learning tool.

We sell a DLE 35RA to a customer who does not return the item properly and as soon as they see the tracking going haywire they file a fraudulent charge back, lie thru their teeth to make sure they get their money back and that's a bad sale on my part? Huh... I was relieved of $349.95 from a bogus chargeback and 58 days ago the dirtbag customer "claimed" to have returned the DLE and as of today, it has still NOT been returned.
You can try and spin it anyway you like but the facts will derail your little attempt, and the other 2 clowns as well.
Fact - Buyer signed for the package onApril 1.
Fact - Buyer DIDNOT ship it back properly, they merely marked it "Refused or Return to sender" without any insurance.
Fact - On or about April 12th I was debited $349.95 from their chargeback.
Fact - OnApril 18th as the package bounced back and forth, they had it in their hands AGAIN and refused it AGAIN (instead of calling or acknowledging they had it) and they were already paid on the charge back.
Fact - USPS track & confirm CLEARLY shows the package was NEVER delivered to either mySpring Hill FL address or the Sarasota, FL warehouse address.
Fact - My insurance company requires a loss affidavit signed by the customer. The customer has not returned a single email or phone call since they filed the fraudulent chargeback.
Fact - They filed a fraudulent harrassment lawsuit against my company (and my ex-wife, who does not work for me, never has and has NOTHING to do with this company in anyway) in Passiac County New Jersey for attempting to collect a debt.
Fact - The FTC affords me the right to attempt to collect a debt, provided the federal guidelines are followed, and they were, as always.
Fact - My attorney is urging me to file a counter suit for Fraud and sue them for the $349.95 ANDall of of my expenses in this case which currently exceed $5K.
Fact - I'll spend $5,000 to get my $350 back anyday just to prove a point to a potential dirtbag scammer. I choose to do this because; A, I have the money and B, I get SICK of getting ripped off by internet scammers who 1 minute cannot speak or write any english, but when I read their hand written complaint, they write perfect english and from what I hear from the detective... they speak it perfectly as well.
To this day, I still do not have the package back as I was promised. The customer was granted their charge back and reimbursed $349.95. I am out $349.95 AND a DLE 35RA. Not sure how I ripped someone off, but by all means, do your best to stir the pot. Look at the tracking. Delivered onApril 1st, marked refused onApril 4th, dropped thru a night parcel chute at 1:25am and after nearly 15,000 miles... NOTHING.
You tell me bub... was this package ever returned to me? Last seen injacksonville FL on May 14th after making SEVERALtrips back and forth.

Go ahead Zach... try your best bub.
