ORIGINAL: i live for 3D

just eyeball it
i fly:

33% cap ...33% edge540 ..46%ultimate... many jets

this solution is not for my level sir.i like presision

you cant eyeball it.if you mistake you can give flap or spoiler this way.then you must trim elevator to corect it.then you wont be able to find the right engine updown thrust angles and right C.G.and trim proper the aircraft....

any other sugestions??...thanx in advance for any replies

I have a UCD 46 and use a computer radio with the ailerons set up to move together controlled by a slider. I can move the slider up and raise the trailing edge of both ailerons from 0 to 1 cm or lower the slider to drop the trailing edge up tp 1 cm. I have all of my 3d planes set up to adjust the TE similarly. I did this to allow me to raise the TE a few degrees hoping to reduce wing rock and stabilize harrier flight. The results are subtle, not a lot happens when the TE is raised a little. The most noticable effect is a decrease in lift. Currently I do as Tony says, set it so it looks centered and fly that way.

After you try all the tech stuff to make yourself "feel" better...check it with your eyeball. You'll find out it will work just as well. I just eyeball mine. I do that on my giant scale planes too. Works just fine.

Thanks
Barry

Hey Barry, hows it going....

i like the rest use the eyeball, but i did put my ailerons in between some books on both ends twisted the opposite way and let them sit for a few days then i took them out and held them twisted just a little with a helper and ironed them out and they really came out pretty close.......flys great.......i think the eyeball is the most sopisticated devise you can use in this Hobby

I use a straight edge from the center of the wing leading edge to the tip of the aileron. It should pass straight through the center of the hinge. Not as technical as some methods, but it works for me.

i think i live for 3d has the idea. a u can do 3d 46 is a play plane. i have one myself that i built in a day. i eyeballed it and it flies great. dont over think it. u can do 3d is very forgiving.

the UCD is no precision plane so why are you worried just eyeball it and fly the snot out of it.

It depends. if the wingtips are flat I use a straight edge and mark from center of leading edge to center of trailing edge. Then align aileron with the mark that was made. But since the ailerons are flat use a straight edge again and make parallel with the horizontal stab.

This has worked great for me so far.

DelGatorGrande,

I think I understand your wanting precision. I like that also. It ends up making your flying easier and more impressive. This is a fun fly plane and most will use it to stick bang. But I think it will also make a nice precision practice plane.

I just finished one and test flew it yesterday. Still have some trim flights to dial in the knife edge.

I placed one balsa stick on each side of the wing. I set up the ailerons where they cross. It was pretty close. Knife edge needed a 4% mix of rudder to up elevator and about 4% rudder to same aileron mix. The rudder to elevator mix is ok, but I need to make some changes to the rudder aileron mix. Its not quite where I want it and I have to hold aileron stick to keep knive edge from rolling out. I may change the aileron positions and take out the mix to see if it changes the roll tendancy.

I have CG set to almost 7 inches at the fuse. Its a bit tail heavy. but I like that.

Uplines seem ok. I will run through the rest of my trim flights later this week.

Let me know how yours works out and what sort of mixes you end up with.

[8D]hey jack

i m working a 46%h9 ultimate at the same time
this is why it took me so much to fnish it.

but for sure is a diferent ucando!

c.f. landing gear with light weel axles..no way i would keep that axles nuts on my plane.
lighter tailweel..from a toy
lipo for receiver
single elevator servo...and other changes..

4t70 os with apc14/4w for start

i had some days ago the first flites...
im very hapy with this diet....it flyes way better than the rest doos in my club....i was low and slow all the time.
i did roling harier and hover down on the deck....im verry hapy with it!
presicion flying needs work yet...[&o]

now i try to set proper c.g. /up down left right thrust elleron diferential...

when illbe happy ill start mixingout..

its a nice everyday plane...when ill not fly my big girls...
ill post you when ill finish set up and mixing but i have to fint time first from my new bby

take care jack and fly more!

I am on my 3rd U Can Do 3D 46. All have some level of twist in the ailerons, even after taking lots of time to shrink covering till flat. So if I run a laser incidence gauge for dead on precision and the pitch changes 2-3 degrees along the span of the aileron, what exactly have I accomplished?
Sight down the aileron from the wing tip and align to the center of the wing as best you can. You need to mentally average out the twist. And since the ailerons were made to move 45 degrees either way, 1 or 2 degrees off will not hurt much. The airplane will never be a IMAC pattern bird.

Jsenicka,

I can see that. Do you trim out any of the bad habits from the twists and turns? Or just fly off the sticks how it is?

Mostly just trim it out. I do take the time to trim flap deflection (both ailerons) up or down to minimize elevator trim needed, as that effects inverted and knife edge flight, as well as hovering.

I am in total agreement with Jsenicka's method. Don't make a big deal of it. Fly it, trim it and enjoy.
I currently have three UCD's, one 46 size and two 60 size.

My u-can-do 46 with an OS 50 SX sometimes has an aileron flutter during high speed manuvers or dive. It is quite severe when it occurs and does stop when I pull back the power to idle. I have closed the gap between the aileron & wing. Everything appears tight , the hinges, servo clevis, etc. Has anyone experienced this and if so how was it corrected.

Thank You
Craig

I have a U-CAN_DO 46 with an OS 50 SX. The problem I have is that in some manuvers and high speed dives I get severe aileron flutter which does stop as soon as I pull back power to idle. I have checked everything for tightnes including the hinges, clevis', servo arms etc. I have sealed the gap between the aileron and wing.
Has anyone experienced this and what was the solution?

Thank You

Craig

What servo do you have installed?

This is the question...

You can seal the hinge gap and it may help a bit but honestly...you are over-speeding the airframe. The UCD is designed for very SLOW flying and 3D aerobatics which is why the control surfaces are so large. Fly it a bit slower, and then don't worry about the flutter. If you continue to fly it as fast as you currently are it'll come apart on you.
