I would use the 2 cell pack with the GWS set-up. The 3 cell pack will fry the motor in just a few runs. 2 lipo cells will be plenty for the stock GWS (depending on the gearing) Might not hover at 1/2 throttle, but 3/4 throt. is realistic. You can also re-time the GWS motors to get some extra "kick"

Finally got my incarnation of it done... I decided to change the design of the wing to more of an edge style. If anyone was up at the mid america electric show up in Michigan today, you would have caught it flying. It was crazy, I put it in a knife edge spin, and it was doing about 3 or 4 revolutions a second. I also put some carbon fiber braces in the tail, because I felt if flexed a bit too much. For a power supply, I'm running an Astro 020 brushless on an Astro 3.21:1 gear box. For cells, right now I'm running 9 cells x 600 mah. Weighted in at 21 oz. I have some lipo packs ready to go in, and due to the amp draws on this motor, I'll be putting 3, 3 cell packs in parallel. The cells are e-tech 1200. So I'll roughly have 3600 mah worth of cells running through it :-)
Sorry for the bad pictures, web cams suck.

just a few more... actually got a pic of it in the air finally :-) Also, I think I finally got rid of the wing flex. In the first pic you can see it, I added some carbon fiber to the trailing edge of the wing. This imporved the response of the ailerons as well since they were no longer flexing.

Just a few more pics so you can see the guts of this thing better....
The first shot was so you can see all the carbon fiber I have in this. A tube running all the way down the fuse, 3 seperate pieces in the wing, 1 in the elevator joining the elevator halves, and 2 bracing the stab. The second pic is the electronics. All hs-55's with a berg 5 channel receiver. Flying weight right now is 21 ounces. Tonight I'm going to be putting a different motor, along with lithium's, and it will hopefully be down to 17 ounces or under...

Some flexing is OK. When people see my Tribute fly for the first few times, I can here them go "Whoa, he was lucky, next time it'll fold" or "Let's go offer him a bag, he'll need it soon." At first, I would only do low stress aerobatics like hovering, harriers, and rolls, but gradually I would do a loop, then two loops, then tight loops, and right now I have done inverted snaps with opposite rudder, and waterfalls, and all the other flexy manuevers that really flex the wing. It has yet to even get close to folding, none of the carbon fiber, tape or bluecor shows any signs of damage. I think you should try a new 3DX Edge, but without all that CF, and a cheap motor to really see how flexing is fine. Dan

Well, I wasn't worried about the wing flexing... untill my ailerons wern't responding. After the wing flexed so much, the ailerons would just stop working. That's when I added the extra pieces on the wing. The tail section is braced because I felt the elevator halves were way to weak. I can see doing waterfalls where the elevator halves wouldn't give the same deflection. That and the rudder would flex horribly, even when I was just carrying the plane around. It would probably fly with out it, but this plane is unpredicably enough... I got a new motor and gear box for it tonight, so I'll try that with the lithium polymers.

SkyPro, I too live in Gilbert, AZ and couldn't find blueCor. So I ordered up some Depron. Stuff is expensive and the shipping is outrageous. I took the cheapest shipping he had at $16.00 Sure hope the stuff is good...

You will be happy with it, it is superior to Bluecor, but much more expensive. Where do you fly? I fly at the Chandler Bowl, in front of the house and at a big dirt lot next to some tennis courts, and across from the skatepark. Maybe you know where the first and third are? Hope to see you sometime,

Since I'm flying an AeroWorks 39% Extra I can only fly at the Rittenhouse field in Queen Creek. But with this new small stuff I'll be free to fly where ever I want YES!

You could fly at EVA. I fly there, but not much lately since I can just walk out of the house and fly. I have been out to the field you were talking about, and I didn't like it too much. There wasn't really any frequency regulation, or flight line, or really much of anything.

And that's exactly why I do like it. LOL Seriously though, its really a great Large Bird field. Most all, if not all of the top IMAC and TOC pilots have flown there at one time or another. It's Frazier Briggs favorite field when he comes up from New Zealand (he calls it THE MOON). Even Dave Patrick has flown there. Opps, sorta gettin of topic.

Hehe and all the cows staring while I fly scare me
Also, I know someone who intentionally was shot down there, since they had a LiPo pack, and the other person wanted to fly. Back on topic.... where are you guys getting the EPS 300 with the "D" gearing? Is there a better motor that isn't more than about 30-40 bucks?

Well, you could try the dual ips system from gws. There's a 5.9:1 and a 7:1 gearbox for these, with 5-10 oz of thrust, depending on how you prop it, on the 5.9 and from 8-10 on the 7. Both setups on that one will draw about 2-4 amps. The 300c with type d kicks out from 7-12 oz of thrust, while drawing as high as 8.5 amps. Now, with retiming, you can get these numbers up alot higher, and the amp current draw will also go up. So while the dual ips system may not be quite as powerful, it draws alot less current, so longer flight times. The problem is getting it to put out the thrust like the 300c.
Other option is to get something like an acro 280. Only problem is the motor alone is $40.50. Add on a decent gear box, you're looking around at around $56... a bit higher then you were looking. Also the graupner speed 330 @ $29.90. Puts out about 15 oz of thrust with a 2.3:1 gearbox, so I can imagine if you put a higher ratio on it you can get more out of it, espically if you retime it. Hope this helps!

I just get all my stuff including the EPS 300 with the "D" gearing form Aircraft-world.com
Shipping is just $2.50 and the service has been great.
Cheers, Katipo

I'm interested in building one of these. Does anyone know where I can get te bluecore here in So Cal?
Katipo,
I looked at the website you mentioned and found the EPS 300s, but which is the D gearing?
I'm pretty new to the electric side of flying so please help me out.

Don't know about blucor in So Cal. If you can't find it this is the best solution (better stuff anyway) www.depronusa.com I love building with Depron. Much stronger and lighter. It's a bit more expensive than fan fold, but worth every penny. Get a couple of sheets of 13"x39" 6mm Depron. Carl (owner) is a great guy!

Just got my Depron today. Have the fuse cut out and routed the slot for the carbon. Awesome stuff and a blast to work with. Hard to believe I can frame up a plane in less than an hour.
Thanks Tim for all your hard work on the computer making the plans for us and supplying us with all the information to build this plane. Truly appreciative.
I was originally going to make wood patterns and use my shaper to make the parts, but after doing a dry run it would've been a total waste of time. This stuff slices like contest balsa AND it sands like balsa too.
Though I initially thought that I was getting gouged by the cost I was mistaken. The stuff came FedEx'ed in just a few days and was packaged great. Thanks Carl!

Told Ya! LOL
I just love Depron! It's been available in Europe for years, but only recently here in the US. I'm glad we now have a good source!
OK guys, I just uploaded my new website. I've been working on it for a while, mostly layout, but the content is starting to come together. Lot's more work to do, but the hard stuff is done (weeks of work). Let me know what you think.

I just wanted to thank Tim for directing me to Park Flyer Motors for a hard to get motor!
I'm just getting into electrics, so I needed to get a bunch of stuff. Most places didn't carry everything I was looking for at the lowest prices. So I was going to have to order from (4) different places to get everything I wanted. That's when Tim emailed me and told me about a place that had the new GWS 350-D motors in. When I went to the site expecting to only find the motor, I was surprised to find almost everything I needed, and for prices that beat almost all the other sites that I was originally planning on ordering from. Bill (the owner) even gave me a special deal for ordering so much from him (I told you...I had to buy allot of stuff).
So thanks to Tim for finding Park Flyer Motors, and Bill for getting me into electrics quick, and for less money than I would have spent elsewhere! He even had Razor 350's in stock...he has (2) less now!
