Het Mike,

Where do you fly? I just got my ucando. I used to fly with the ARCS years ago.

Its a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for flying.
U Can do
Yes U Can Do 3D.

It was another great saturday at the field. A little hot and buggy, but what can you do? Although i do wish we werent facing the rising sun when we fly, I keep flying into the sun.

I love this plane more and more each week. I got in 4-5 good flights today before i had to come home or face the rath of the misses. I finally had the dreaded landing gear malfunction on my first flight. I epoxied it back together at the field. I think i might go back through the forumn and find the build up tips for the gear and see what i can do this week.

I still need to set my CG back further, its still at about 5 1/4. I was trying to get the tail to drop to see if I could harrier, no matter how slow, no matter how much up elevator it just wants to float level.

sctcrash... Moving your CG will do it... Mine is around 6" and it hangs
the tail pretty good, I need to work on harriers... But one day I kept
trying to go the length of the runway with the tail wheel on the ground
didn't get even close, but it was fun... Tho my UCD sits at home mostly
now.. I did take it out yesterday and had some fun... But the old high
air time YS is giving the ship up I believe:-(... Even with the wood prop
it's lagging a bit:-((( So looking at my options...

Gary.... I got 4 tumbles on my waterfalls, doing as Barry said, But mine
really wants to roll out since my flat spin landing.... Flys good but a bit
different:-(

Have fun people!!!

Well, I think the house is sold. We got to see the inspection results and the roof needs to be replaced but it sounds like we'll be able to split that with the buyers.............[8D] And the angels sing.........Halleluja! Halleluja
Can't wait to get moved into the new hangar [8D]

CeeGee. Congratulations on selling your home. Cool. Maybe you can split the cost of a new airplane with the buyers too!?!?! Just a thought.
Raideron, Good on you with the waterfalls. They're not that hard with this plane. But they do try to wash out and go into a KE spin if you don't use some aileron.
Didn't get to fly this weekend because I was tied up doing other important things. I might be albe to slip out for a quick flight on Monday.
Have a great day guys!
Thanks,
Barry

TSUPPA - I sometimes fly at ARCS, but more often at the Centear Field, over outside of Lisbon, Ohio.

I'm getting ready now to go fly my UCD 46 and my Cub.

Are you the Mike Boyd from Richmond Ohio?

Hey!! That's a brilliant thought. If I can just slip that in the paperwork somehow......[:-]
Boy! Did I have a fun day with the UCDo. Man was that fun...........[8D] [X(] But first I tried to fly the U.Stick for a bit. Well, that didn't work. I couldn't get the dumb thing to stay running. I didn't put much time into it and got the UCD out for a sport. So much fun to fly....... I did fly the Twist for a bit but didn't have as much fun with it as the UCD. The Saito 72 in the Twist seems to be a little enimic...... not sure why. I'm thinking of selling and buying an 82. Here's some pictures. First one is me walking back to the table after the U. Stick kept shutting down. Next one is me working on the dumb U.Stick. Next one is me hovering the UCD......... OH YEAH!! Last one is our club field. We had a drawing for prizes and I won a couple of things.....

Boy, been gone for a bit due to a computer virus, and it looks like I have miss a lot! Finally got to test the beefed up landing gear on the ucando. It worked like a charm! Was coming in for a spot landing, and had a wind about 10 mph and the plane was about 3 feet from the ground with hardly any forward speed when the wind stopped and the ground sucked the plane in. It dropped like a rock!!! broke the prop and bent the landing gear to where it looked like a low rider! Oh and also broke the prop. Went out and got the plane expecting the worse. Did a quick check of every thing, bent the landing gear back and replaced the prop. Fired it up and flew it a few more time!!! Love the plane to death. Just about got the hovering thing down to keeping it there for about 10 seconds. The snaps on full rates are a thing of beauty! Still have not been able to get it to flat spin. But that will come.

ORIGINAL: runover1

I am through with UCD's. I was on my 3rd flight of my second UCD and the stab failed, (both sides). I did not have a chance to fly it 3D as I was still getting the motor to work right inverted. I was coming back around and thinking of pulling a loop at about 100 feet up and I felt a really heavy gust of wind come along. I was flying straight and level about a 100 foot up and 300 yards out when both stabs flew off at almost the same time. Upon investigation of the crash, I noticed the balsa leading edge failed.....
Sorry for your loss runover1.
What happened to your UCD is a well known "Achilles heel" (weak spot) of this plane and was discussed at length earlier (100's of posts back )in this and other threads. The material in the stab is probably of varying quality and a lot of them failed early on, prompting a general warning to put on flying wires or, as I did, struts. See pics.
From your description yours might have had an unusually weak/soft balsa so it may be worthwhile to try to get GP to look into it.
I put my UCD together a year ago using a pumped OS.91 with a 15x4W and it is still going strong. Very good combo if you know to use careful throttle control and only go over 1/2 throttle to pull out and on uplegs. The LG fell off on the first Harrier landing. Almost no glue and the pins that should have held it did were only pushed halfway through. Had the fuse separate in two parts behind the wing box once when I hit the ground with a wing tip on a gusty day. The wing was not even scratched but the lightly built fuse just separated. Easy repair really.

With the CG way aft at 5 3/4" to 6" it can (at least my son can ) hover for ever. Knife edge is difficult without a lot of mixing, waterfalls are easy and so are flat spins, Harriers and elevators need about 30 degrees of spoileron but then they are rock steady.

Heres one more pic. This plane is very good looking in this positon. These were taken yesterday. The cowl is off because we've been adjusting the valves and tweaking the engine. A small piece of lead on the firewall to keep the CG.

Hi guys, I told ya I would throw a few pics to show what took the place of my U-Can-Do, although briefly...

I lost the P-40 Sunday. Started a left turn and teh plane just continued to roll and would not respond.

It was only the 4th flight. Still not sure what caused it, but one aileron servo was unplugged and although I suppose it could have come undone in the wreck, it would make sense. Only problem is that I had no other control other than being able to shut the throttle down.

I am going to send the radio in and have it gone over. But here a few pics before and after.

Looks like the U-Can-Do is coming out of retirement only now with a Magnum .91 on it. THat might spruce it up a bit.

Goldenclan, Glad you're back. I wondered what happened. We haven't heard from you in a while. Sorry to hear about your computer problems.

bjorngl, Thanks for posting the nice pictures........[8D] You're going to have to quit flying like that though..... You're making me look bad......[:-]

Liberator, Sorry to hear about the loss of your P-40. I looked like a beautiful plane......

38, I'm thinking of upgrading to a 91. Does it fit in the cowl okay? Is there major mods to do?

bjorngl. Great pictures. Ya gotta love this planes. Don't want to offer advice when you fly better than me but I've found if you have the CG about 5.5" it will still hover (although) I can't get any where near that low) and the KE coupling is reduced dramatically. Just a thought.
Liberator, Man! Sorry to see that sweet plane go down. That's hard to take just 4 flights. But, I've been there. Good luck with the UCD and getting it set up again. Let's hope that wasn't bad UCD Karma.
Goldenclan, Welcome back. Do you need a prop repaired?
Cee Gee.... more power?
HTanks,
Barry

Now that you mention it barry, I have two, a 13x4w on the ucando and a 18x10 on the kangke cap 120. The engine died on take off about 3 feet in the air, landed hard and took the gear out. But you should have seen it take off!!!!!! It left the ground with a tiny bit of elevator and the wings were level with no inputs from me, the the engine died. It kept its wings level untill it stalled and just fell to the ground. Its been repaired and waiting for the next flight!!!!

More Power!! [X(] Well, not so much that I need more power just that the Saito 72 in my Twist is well.......... uh... LAME! It just doesn't seem to get with it so I'm thinking of selling it and putting the 82 from my UCD into the Twist and putting a 91 in the UCD......... something like that. [8D] Oh! That's not a cop it's the park ranger where our field is located. He loves to fly so it's mostly because of his efforts that we have a flying field in a state park..........
