hinge slots
Hello,
Finally got the UCD60 box. Reviewed the plane parts and almost everythig is just super except some minor issues. For example hinge slots (the most issue I concerned about) in the wing are noticeably non parallel to the wing edge. Slots in the ailerons have the similar issue and in addition are a bit not inline one with others. It seems I can't leave that as is and have to fix it. Did anyone run into the same problem and if so how did you resolve it? I'm going to seal existing slots with epoxy and redone them. May be you can advise a better solution? thx |
RE: hinge slots
My hinge slots werent deep enough to take all of the CA hinge anyways, so when I trimmed them for depth I just straightened them out. When you inject the CA into the hinge it fills all the slots and seals everything in the wood up, IF you dont make a big gap when trimming. Your idea sounds ideal;) if you wanna start over. If you havent read the other threads, I will suggest that you not use the hinge material included, my rudder hinges broke after about 15 flights so I replaced all my hinges. Either get you some Radio South 1/4 Scale CA hinges or pinned hinges. My $.02

RE: hinge slots
crank, I think what you have found on your UCD is why people think ca hinges are bad. They don't pay attention and stick the hinge in and its actually in a bind, it tears shortly after they start using it and its time to blame THEM DAMN CA HINGES.

RE: hinge slots
i went with the blue ca hinges vise the weaker white ca type of hinges i think pro south makes the blue ones

RE: hinge slots
Bentgear, you dont know what the hell you are talking about regarding my personal experience. Are you the mfg of the cloth CA hinges that come with the UCD or something? Thats the second remark you have made regarding this.
I did install my hinges correctly and they didnt hold up plain and simple. If you want to gamble on the hinges go for it. I may be new to RC but I have been building and flying control line planes for 20 years and I know exactly what I am talking about when it comes to hinging a control surface. [:@] |
RE: hinge slots
BigNed, do you have a fever with these fits or is this just your normal personnality showing thru. I was not even commenting on anything you had in your message.
thank you Ed M. |
RE: hinge slots
I dont normally get upset, but I do know that the hinges that came with MY U CAN DO .60 did not hold up. That was the second time I had personally posted on those hinges failing and the second time you had replied that improper installation was the problem not the hinges. I LOVE my U CAN DO and great planes makes great planes, but my hinge grooves were straight (after I straightened them) and I had fit them properly and they failed anyway. You may be right SOME folks may be installing their hinges in crooked grooves and they are stressing to the point of failure, but my experience was not that. If your comments werent meant as they sounded I sincerely apologize.
I just want to make sure that everyone who has a U CAN DO that I can tell gets the opportunity to make up their own mind as to what they would do. I would hate to see someone lose a new plane when I knew to warn them about a potentially catastrophic problem that I had personally experienced. Mike E. |
RE: hinge slots
Sorry BigNed, but nothing was directed to you or at you, and miscut hinge slots are not limited to the UCD - many of the ARF's have them. I reviewed my replies to any threads we may have been comman and can't find anything I may have directed to you that may have been negative, if I overlooked anything I'm sorry if I hurt you feelings.
I have used a lot of CA hinges, most of my deflections are 45 + degrees. No abnormal failures that could be related to the hinge material. I have crashed the heck out of a few planes, dumb thumbs on my part, and pulled a few out, but they bring wood with them. I have no idea why I have good luck with them, and no I don't manufacture them. I even like the GP white CA hinge that so many people hate. I normally cut them myself and I make mine 1" x 1". I refuse to use the ones that come with Hanger 9 planes except to wick up excess CA when I get too much on a surface. Some packs of the blue hinges are great, but some look like a drunk cut them out (sorry Tony, but its true). Ed M. |
RE: hinge slots
I'm with bentgear on the Hangar9 CA hinges, never will use them again after loosing 2 planes to them. I suspect that to much throw combined with low torque servos allowed some blowback/flutter at the surfaces that resulted in the tail literally exploding before the ship went in.
On the other hand.....I use GP CA hinges on everything .60 sized and under and have had NO failures yet. I also tend to use 70+ in. oz. servos in applications that require huge throws with the use of long arms being necessary to get those throws. My UCD has a Saito 100 and the original GP CA hinges all the way around and I have flown it hard all last summer, zero hinge issues. The airplane definately responds better to the Hitec digitals that replaced the HS605BB that were in it initially. |
RE: hinge slots
I don't understand. I've assembled four UCD's that are out there flying with the supplied hinges and no failures.

RE: hinge slots
Joe,
If you think that going digital on the elevators was a big improvement just wait till you see how the UCD will wag it's tail with one on the rudder! I know a lot of people don't think they need them(I was one of them) but there simply is NO comparison. This is especially evident when in a hover and the plane starts to fall out, with the standards I couldn't hold it and had to fly out, with digi's it's no problem, I can simply SHOVE the plane back into the vertical. |
YS 110 right thrust?
For anyone out there that has the 110 on UCD. Did you add more right thrust than 3 deg? Just finishing rebuilding mine and can't wait to get it in the air.

RE: hinge slots
Scott, Got some big ol' gift certificates from Santa for the local hobby shop and got a digi for the rudder on order right now. I selected the JRPS8231 with 88 oz. in. torque at 4.8 v I don't know what that goes up to on a 6v system but it should do some paddling. Joe

Guess I won't need the digital servo for my rudder just yet. Got out yesterday for some of that sunny, 50 degree weather. Flew a dusty old bird till the wind calmed down. Then it was time to 3D. Got out UCD #3 which now looks like #1 & 2. I thought that I put my radio problems behind me when I retired the Futaba gear from 1 & 2 Went with JR. 8103 TX, R945S RX, New wire harness, switch and battery with DS811 servos. Got into the air for some not so spectacular flying, still working on my torque rolls when it fell out flat. About half throttle and some up elevator to fly out for another try and it went into a loop, then another. Wait a minute, I'm not flying this. All in all it must have done about 30 loops in the longest 3 or 4 minutes I've ever experienced. We had time to chat about the dilemma. Turned the TX off and on a couple of times, slapped it. Nothing. Got tired of twisting the sticks so we just waited. It probably lost about 5 feet of altitude with each loop as the slight crosswind worked it into the next field. The loops were perfect and it eventually went in level. One foot higher and maybe it would just knock off the gear and prop. No such luck. Off to the shop for an autopsy. Plenty of juice in the battery. No response to input. Where is the crystal? This RX was wrapped up like an infant and very securely placed. No crystal. Did you ever try to pull out a crystal? Its not that easy. Well I got all I need for #4 except a fuse and cowl. Time to get busy. Joe

RE: hinge slots
Joe, sorry to hear about your loss. Not a pretty sight ! You do have a spare UCD ? Anyway, if you are using the same Rx type, check for that loose xtal. Very unusual for it to get loose unless it's not plugged in all the way.........

RE: hinge slots
Raj, It was in when I set this one up. I'm going to tape the next one in. The only opening on the padding was on the connector side. The rest was wrapped. Go figure. Joe

RE: hinge slots
those jr reciviers spit the crystils out for some reason. a guy lost a small pattern plane to that problem . i use canopy glue on the flat part dental floss to tie it. and tape to hold every thing togeather. so fare they have held up but i do check every day out

cumn thru sorry to hear about your loss i will 1/2 mask the flag tomorrow for old girl......

RE: hinge slots
the crystil pins are fine but in the reciver the sockets are tapered i am playing with a 259. dollar reciver and can move it in the air and make the crystill go flying out to the next room once it get so far it acts like ejection seat they should not do that i don't know why they even make them like that some are worse some are better i have one i can't even get the crystill out of it but i have went to glueing tapeing and tieing them in you shouldn't have to go that fare with such a light part i don't think thats getting bad when you have to do as much work on the reciver as the plane:D AS CARTMAN SAYS THATS UN COOOL
sorry about the spelling the fix it program isn't working for me today:D:D |
RE: hinge slots
Just my luck, cowls are in stock but the fuse is on back order. It says early January on TH site. Well maybe it will be in by the time all the electronics get checked over by the techs. Looks like the pushrod sleeves are slightly bent on the 100, better send that out as well. Wheel pants are fine, how about that. Joe
