RE: hinge slots
I was reading the posts reguarding installing the G23 (pages 52 and 53 of this post) and it got me thinking. Milton, the guy who owns the plane said the g23 will spin a 16x8 APC at 8550 rpms. However a YS 110fz spins the same prop over 9000 rpm (up to 9700 in some posts). If this is truly the case and considering that the g23 was over 2lbs and the YS is considerably less then that the preformance of the YS must me increable. Anyways, just my thoughts

RE: engine choice
I was considering that because I have just purchased a new ys110 from central hobbies for $323.87 for my U CAN DO which currently is sitting in the basement with no engine installed. Anyways, cant wait to get this thing in the air.

RE: engine choice
I was considering getting a Saito 100 for this plane because it is cheaper and lighter but then when I read the posts about siphoning occuring because of the tank level I decided on getting a YS becuase of the built in regulator. If i went with the Iron Bay regulator and the Saito 100 vs the YS 110 the YS comes out around the same price.
One question, how much right thrust are you guys adding to your engines to get straight uplines. This is the math I have worked out: for 3 degrees of right thrust a 2.7mm washer must be added to the left side, for 4 degrees a 3.55 mm washer, for 5 degrees a 4.5mm washer. Anyways, if you could let me know what angles you are using that would be great. PS For all you Canadian modelers (like myself), Great News! The looney is at a 10 year high 77.86 cents (read this in this mornings paper), this is up more then 13 cents from last year. This will save me almost $100 on the YS 1.10 from what I would have payed last year |
RE: engine choice
Joe you must be a real U Can do Lover to keep buying the same plane every time one went in :) I am sorry about your recent crash. I would like to keep the good ol thumbs tuned for my Edges in summer, so I got a U Can Do for winter. A friend lent me a Saito 91 for this plane, however another friend might have a supercharged YS 91 for sale. Did any of you guys used this plane engine combo before?
Please let me know. |
RE: engine choice
Oops,
Just checked out the YS 91 specs, the smallest prop it swings is a 13X10. Ignore guys, too much engine. |
RE: engine choice
Striker, the YS91 is the perfect engine for a UCD 60. Just put an APC 16 x 4W prop on it and go have fun, lots of fun.

RE: engine choice
Bentgear,
You guys are right, but what about ground clearance with the 16X4? I can make a new landing if needed anyways. Thanks for the input guys. |
RE: engine choice
Striker, no problem, I even run a 16 x 4w on my Saito 100 on my UCD 46. No need for any modifications.

RE: engine choice
Striker, I stopped buying them. I'm down to scavenging from the corpses of the last three.

RE: engine choice
Thanks Bentgear for the reply.
A Saito 100 on a 46 UCD? Holy S#$%, it must be a rocket :) and TR till you get dizzy:D I probably will pick up the YS .91 |
RE: engine choice
Hi cumn thru,
3 UCDs, man thats amazing, I hope you have luck with the one you rebuilding with the leftovers :) You never know, this one might last a year or two :D Good Luck. |
RE: engine choice
Fellow UCDer's, here's some useful info on the fuel tank stopper in your UCD.

Well i guess i am out of luck.
the last two times i flew something messed up happened!! good thing there cheap repairs though. first hit a bush and poked a few holes. then today flying in 15 mph winds i landed soft as hell on a ant hill and wham landing gear pops out and i got more holes in the wing!! i will give great planes a thumbs up on there landing gear because if it was in there with epoxy or something to that sort i would probably need a new plane. the damn gear just popped out easy fixes |
Advice on engine choice
Hi All,
Wow, sure is a lot of intrest in this bird. I saw a UCD fly at my field with the ST90. I was very impressed with the performance and decided I had to have one. Picked one up at LHS and after looking it over and beginning assembly, it seems they have made some improvements to the wing since early postings on this thread. Such as all balsa ribs, none crushed. I did have some wing tip damage, (outside of box damage), easily repaired. I wanted to ask opionions on engine choice. I own a ST-G90, and a O.S. 90 surpass II w/ pump, both looking for a home. Between these two engine choices, What say you all ? I am leaning toward the O.S., just because I like 4-strokes. I have a perry pump I could add to the ST installation, so both ways could have tank sitting on C.G. Sure is a lot of usefull information here on the UCD and I plan on useing all the mods and upgrades I have read about. Though I did skip from page21 to 62 after several nights reading through this long thread. Thanks guys, Craig |
RE: Advice on engine choice
Either will work great. Larger prop size will help in 3D

RE: Advice on engine choice
YO, picked up my new fuse and cowl today and with a little luck, maybe tomorrow I will start the resurection. U C D #4. When its done I will bring over to "Our Lady of Planes" and have it blessed. Time to get busy, Joe

RE: Advice on engine choice
Did it look like GP has improved the reinforcement in the firewall and LG plate in your new fuse ?
|
RE: Advice on engine choice
Raj, It looks like the last one which was also from the newer line. I don't have the nose sections from the first two. The LG mounting block is pinned and the firewall has tristock on the vertical sides, other than that this is the one with the extra support on the fuse sides where the wing bolts on. Anybody know what the incidence is supposed to be on the wing? I want to meter these before I install the control surfaces. #3 just did not fly as well as 1+2 The wing didn't seem to seat right. Regardless of the CG it always had a nose up attitude. We will see on this one. Joe

Raj, They started adding two light ply plates that I noticed around September or later. Maybe there was trouble or it was just an upgrade. Joe

RE: Advice on engine choice
Joe, thank you for the pic. I have not experienced or heard of any problem in the wing bolt plate, but I did put in an epoxy fillet at the corner of the plate and fuse doubler.
|
RE: Advice on engine choice
Guys,
One side of the wing bolt plate on my UCD 46 broke loose while tightening the wing bolts (using normal force). The plate seemed to be cut a little short. I reglued while squeezing the fuse together and added tri stock on top and bot. I fly the UCD 60 also with no problem in this area and it doesn't have the additional lite ply. |
RE: Advice on engine choice
Hi Guys,
Has anyone flown with the fuel tank between the two middle supports on the fuse? Putting the tank here is just AFT of the CG, so I was wondering what the results were for people who did this mod. This will be my winter plane so I will have aluminum skis on the front with the bateries up front as well so if I did put he tank above the wing, it may compensate for the CG which I might start @ 4". I have HiTec Digitals all around. Thanks, Striker. |
