RE: Showtime
Well i bit the bullet and decided to order one from the LHS. After reading this thread to its entirity I dont think there is nothing wrong with this plane. Its gonna be my winter project. Im thinking of installing the saito 150 but, not sure though. Depends on what my cash flow looks like.. Santa?!?
|
RE: Showtime
if you are buying a new engine, go for the Saito 125. Should be a real powerhouse
|
RE: Showtime
Yeah the saito 125 is also on my list of motors. Once i start building, ill make the decision. Gonna do a little research.
|
RE: Showtime
My impression is that Saito 125 is like YS 110, but without the finickiness.
|
RE: Showtime
Granted this isn't the saito thread but, ill give my 2 cents. An engine guy I respect (fuel manufacturer who thoroughly tests many motors of both companies, and studies customer feedback on both) says the Saito 150 has more power than a YS 110, but not by a large margin. The 125 is going to have more power than the 120 but just a hair less than than the YS110. Than again your looking at the weight the 125 weighs almost 4 oz less than the YS110.

RE: Showtime
Ok.. Just recieved the showtime from the LHS. Very pretty indeed. Seems like its going to be an easy build. I do have some questions about servos. I have some extra futaba 3050 digitals laying around looking for a home. Granted they are rated at 90oz which will be enough but, i do think they are nylon gears which im kinda learly about. Maybe they could be used for the ailerons. Granted im a futaba guy and it looks like Hitecs are a fan with most of you. I do kinda perfer futabas. Browsing on servocity I think the 9451's and a 9350 should be fine. OF course gotta go digital.
I put a saito 125 on backorder at the LHS and i cant wait til they get in. Seems like the stock tank would work fine. Anyone have issues on getting the tank low enough to get inline with the carb? Thanks, cant wait to start the build. |
RE: Showtime
There is a Showtime review in the latest issue of R/C Report. Gordon Banks, the editor, did the review and had quite a few recommendations to improve the building process. He lost his first Showtime due to over controlling it during takeoff (the recommended control throw settings caused a wild ride resulting in a crash). He did not have anyone fly 3D with it, but says for sport and pattern it has incredibly good flight characteristics.

RE: Showtime
lol, the editor crashed the maiden from "dumb thumb" :D.
If you search the tread, there's someone who stripped his futaba nylon gears. I think the same servo also. you HAVE to get MG. Cheapest MG is HS 645, or JR Sport 125. |
RE: Showtime
showtime s a dumb thumb non forgiving plane ... i crashed mine that way and alot of other people have too. you got to have your thumbs in a row:D to fly it... still my favorite plane because it presents a challange. i wil probably thumb # 2 too;)

RE: Showtime
Steve,
I know we talked a tad about this in another thread but the dumb thumb thing has allot to do with the elevator dead spot some are seeing. Dick Hanson has one gas powered and made some recommendations which I will be doing on ST #2. One I feel is important and that is to replace the huge tailwheel with a smaller one. One thing this plane does is "pop" into the air after a fast takeoff run. Allot of that has to do with the plane sitting almost perfectly level when on all three wheels. I had to get a bunch of speed up before it would take off Mine went in because I got to slow too nose high at about 10 feet and right in front of me. I was working the elevators for all they were worth and could see them moving but the plane was not responding. So instead of adding gobs of power I tried to manhandle it which lead to it just dropping flat from the same 10 feet and pretty well destroyed it. Now in the air, it's very comtrollable and precise. In fact over in the Pattern forum they have a setup done that includes throws and expo settings that supposively turns this thing into a pattern animal. With the SFG's on you can forget about needing anything above a click or 2 of rudder for a nice long field length KE. Without them you will not need much more rudder. I was able to get waterfalls really tight, Blenders where wild and violent, flats spins, both upright and inverted were a dream and could be as slow or fast as you wanted. Inverted flat spins could be made to climb easily. The SFG's just helped with these maneuvers Mine started life on a YS110 until it dropped a valve on the second flight, I then installed an OS108 and it was just as good but a little heavier. I now have the 110 back and it will go back into ST#2. This engine on a 17X4 APC was "the cats meow" A 16X6 was just fine but allot harder to hover and I felt it gave the plane too much airspeed, I came from a Funtana 90 with this setuo so being that the F90 was much more lightly built I was concerned about speed. |

"Dick Hanson has one gas powered and made some recommendations which I will be doing on ST #2."
So what are those modifications/recommendations? Thanks in advance, Nick |
RE: Showtime
There are a few people that have seen the "dead spot". As for me, I haven't been able to re-create it even while trying. I don't know what is happening to them, I think in a slow climb the wing is blocking the air flow to the elevator. It's possible that because I am swinging a 17 x 6 prop, my prop wash is keeping my elevator alive, I have no idea.
This plane does it all and lands like a dream. I have landed this thing in a harrier stance, dragging the tailwheel 20 or 30 feet down the runway and then allowing the mains to touch. I even drug the tail wheel and took back off, in a touch and go. Of course, part of my success with might be the fact that I'm flying with a Saito 150, more power than I need, but it makes the flat spins and knife edge spins look sweet as heck! For what it's worth, Ken |

Thanks in advance, Nick There are in this thread somewhere back a few pages. I beleive he is using an Evolution 26 on a pipe they make for it. I asked about it and he gave all the part numbers in this thread. It does take some redrilling of the mounts to get the angle right to work with the pipe |

Hi,
I thought the recommendations concerned the "dead spot", you're probably talking about gas modifiactions etc. right? No this does not bother at all, as I will you use a brand new YS-110, which IMO is the best engine option for the plane. If it can hover with a Saito 100, imagine what it will do with YS-110 :D. Have a look at this .pdf it has some nice photos, it is from a magazine not so well known it is called "Hobby Merchandiser". Rgrds, Nick |

Thanks, Bill and Lee. My thinking was that this is a great flying plane; but, like any other, it can be over-extended with that so-called "high-alpha"/flip-flopping stuff. That seems to have been the case here.
Ken, mine will be overpowered too. A friend had an OS 1.08 lying around without a job...:D Bill, I had already decided to use a Central Hobbies tail wheel unit, which will lower the tail significantly. I did modify the stock unit into a more useful configuration (see pic), but in truth I just don't trust that solder joint to hold up under the repeated high stress of landings. I've had a bellyful of landing gear problems lately. In fact, now that my TNT gear has arrived, I'll spend most of the day correcting an inadequate gear problem on my H9 Extra. Hopefully, the c/f gear supplied with the ShowTime will be more up to the task... |

RE: Showtime
ORIGINAL: bubbagates ... the gear went straight up through the fuselage then rotated and took out both wings and I only scratched the wheel pants and put grass stains on the gear itself Fortunately, I also ordered (for $38 delivered) the TNT aluminum gear. Just finished mounting it, and have to fit the wheel pants. Of course, it is 65 degrees, severe clear, and 5 mph of wind; and instead of flying, I sit here fixing something that should have been right from the distributor; and STILL wouldn't be right if I had not had a Plan B. I must also shift the battery back some, since the CG was borderline nose-heavy before. It will definitely be so now, with the added few extra ounces of this aluminum gear. Of course, if I go by some of the weight-conscious posts I've seen in other threads, this extra three or four ounces is going to make this 78" span/1100 square-inch wing model fall out of the sky like a shot duck... |
RE: Showtime
Steve
I have both the Extra and Showtime. You will never have the gear problem on the ST. The Showtime is now my favorite. |
RE: Showtime
Thanks, David. That's good to know.

RE: Showtime
I pancaked mine from 20 feet when the prop bolt was loose and the prop just flew off. Just a little delam fixed with CA. I've flown it another 15 times since then, no problem
|
RE: Showtime
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that I am selling my Showtime with an O.S 91 II. It's posted in the market place. I have decided to join the fun of cracked / delaminated gears by buying a H9 Extra with a DA, so I am selling my ST.:D Blue Skies! |
RE: Showtime
I wouldnt say never.....Tony Stillman managed to bend his Showtime tail gear sideways at the Toys-for-Tots fly-in.
|
RE: Showtime
You are correct......never says never!
