RE: GP Cap 232
Bill - go check that thread - just posted today's results. GLOWING.
Now - for my flight report - this is an outstanding airplane, capable of every tumbling, twisting, gyroscopic, gut-wrenching manuever ever invented. And new ones that are thought up on the spot. At 13.9 lbs, it accelerates vertically, rolling, and that is NO exaggeration. Slow handling is "motionless", zero ground speed in a slight breeze, and still solid. None of the "Crappy Cap Snappy" stuff that owners of earlier generation Caps from GP remember only too well. This one is NOT anywhere near unstable. MY CG is exactly per the book, and so are the high rates, which are all I'm flying at this point. NO 3D yet.... This is a very good precision airframe, too. I'm surprised a little at how axially it rolls, and how positively it starts and ends snaps and partial snaps. It is just a very good aerobat, and I wouldn't hesitate to say it's a "keeper". The ONLY thing that sucks - so far - is the lightened backplate stock spinner, which distorted when tightening properly to keep it on the front with the DL 50 spinning it. Oh well. And of course, the wheel pants have cracked on all four "inner" corners where the wheel opening is, requiring my CF strips/CA reinforcement. Also - I tossed the tailwheel, as I just don't like the trash they put in there, and went with my modified Sullivan with a threaded-rod tiller attached to the bottom of the rudder. Everything else is dead stock, doesn't need modification, and this has proven so far to be just a really delightful aerobatic package with unreal performance capability with the DL 50. |
RE: GP Cap 232
Where are you getting the DL 50's?
It would seem that a ZDZ40f3A would make this around11-12bs? |

RE: GP Cap 232
Guys i need a little help. I am going to put a DA 50 on mine. Can anyone tell me the length of standoffs i need? I know its somewhere in this thread but to read 40 pages? Thanks you in advance.

RE: GP Cap 232
Today, I got to fly the SNOT outta this bird - again - and the DL is just really doing a FINE job, let me tell you. It is really much more precise than I would have thought initially; very easy to do KE 360's, KE snaps, and damping is just great. This one STOPS when you tell it to!
Also was able to really test the whole performance envelope; this Cap is very easy to fly in the slower speeds just by using more stick. Speed her up, and it's just SOLID. Still, though, the pull vertical-rolling to out of sight takeoffs is a hoot.... ;) JUGFLIER - standoff suggestions are in the manual for the firewall to rear of spinner spacing. |
RE: GP Cap 232
JUg,
I used the 3 inch standoffs. All you will have to do is mount the cowl about 1/4 inch further back and the balance with the servos in the tail will come out perfect |
RE: GP Cap 232
Bob,
Snap it a few times going up. If you do not do deep snaps (bury the elevator) you can get multiples and I really do mean multiples Now do the pulling vertical right from takeoff with about a 15 foot takeoff roll and if you really wanted to you could probably get a little shorter takeoff roll. I think the shortest I ever got was about a foot into a 10mph head wind I'm glad you like it. As we have said time and again in the Ultimate thread, GP did it right with the performance series planes. I just wish they would release the Edge they keep talking about. It would be cool to have a 50cc Edge at 14lbs at less that 400 bucks |
RE: GP Cap 232
Bubba, Last nite on the tower site i noticed under the great planes section there is a new 77" sukhoi that will be available next month. It is trimmed just like the cap 232. I actually had a hard time finding it to order one. Looks like the cap is on its way out and a sukhoi is replacing it.

I just did a very quick check and did not see it but as I said it was very quick, Can you pull up a link for me and I'll look later as I am heading out the door to head to the field in a few minutes |

Well, I'm backordered on THAT puppy. Been HOPING GP would do one. (Sorry Bubba)
Looks like a keeper, and size is perfect for the DL 50. Can't wait. |

Its a good looking plane. I think i'll wait till the price goes down a little.

RE: GP Cap 232
Welp guys.. Just ordered my Cap. I've read all 41 pages of posts. Originally was leaning towards gas.. Now I haven't made a decision yet. Can't have it all!
|
RE: GP Cap 232
I would definitely do gas. Both the Da50 and the DL50 seem to be the engine for this plane. I can only speak from experience on the DA50 but I have absolutely no reason to doubt aerobob as he has never steered me wrong
I can also say the OS160FX works well but not near as well as the 50cc engines. Whaturi and I once flew both "versions" at the same time. He was roughly 2lbs lighter on the OS160 but I smoked him coming out of a hover and he was never able to catch me. What he did not know is I did not come out of the hover at full throttle, I slowly added power on the way up Even at the weight I am at I still have a hard time with IMAC on this plane, it's setup correctly but it's almost too light. Wind just tosses it around. I could not even imagine what it would be like at 11lbs to 12lbs. I took it to a meet 2 months ago and placed sixth with it in a mild crosswind, didn't take it to the next one in an even worse crosswind and placed second, now this was a Comp-Arf 2.3M Extra 330L, I know I know, I am comparing apples to oranges. Now, please do not get me wrong, I love mine to death, it owes me absolutely nothing and you could almost say I owe it and is a great lunch time plane but for IMAC you have to be quick on wind correction with the rudder |
RE: GP Cap 232
Thanks, Bill. :)
My opinion - the DL 50 reportedly has a different reed bank/system than the DA 50, which may explain why it isn't getting the reports of burbling, transition issues, etc. I do not own a DA, and I cannot substantiate if that statement is factual, but it came from a person I know who knows their stuff. Either way - the DL has proven to just be an OUTSTANDING powerplant. Exceptional value, good power, and easy to live with. I would take it over ANY glow engine setup, no matter the size or flavor. Just IMHO. |
RE: GP Cap 232
I'll actually be able to do a comparison on the DA versus the DL. I'm seriously considering one for a QQ Yak I have that I have to buy a new engine for and since it seems the headers for the Da50 are a perfect match then we will see if it likes being run on a Pefa can. It will be at least another month until I can get one [:'(]

RE: GP Cap 232
Here's the deal. I Don't want to use an engine with stand offs. There's gas out there without. Any recommendations? One guy on here flies his with a Saito 1.80. 30oz engine with muffler. For this specific plane.. due to it being built so light.. It seems like you could really go either way. IF you have enough money to buy a high end gas engine. They're the only ones that have a good power to weight ratio. 3lbs with ignition and muffler. As for me.. I only fly any given plane about 3 to 4 times every weekend. Gallon of gas would maybe last me 3 weekends. I don't drink or smoke. So I can subsidize. I guess I'm leaning towards glow due to the weight of this Cap. I got the plane for 264.99 after the 30 dollars off and free shipping due to super savers member. That's not mentioning the 20 dollar gift certificate towards anything from tower. The only thing I really want to sink the money into is servos. I'm either going with the new JR8711's or Hitec HS 5955. And I might use some different hardware on some select items for weight. I want to stay right at 12lbs. I have a Jacio 5.1 perfect harness switch/regulator and a Duralite regulator. Will either one of those suffice? What do you think about this little device? Click on the link and scroll down a bit. Or let me know if there's anything that's already out there.. Similar that will do a better job. Or is it even required? As a security device/onboard glow?
http://www.sullivanproducts.com/ What about wood props? Any top of the line ones? I want 3D. Thanx guys. |
RE: GP Cap 232
Disregard the "stand offs" statement. hehe

RE: GP Cap 232
Radar,
I understand all your points and we were just saying this plane screams for a good gas engine. Even the recommended 43cc does just fine. A big Saito would be fine as well but you will be doing pull-pull on the rudder for balance, I would think. The DL50 comes with a muffler the last I had heard and is not much more than a big Saito. As far as your servo choices they are fine BUT the 8711 is a battery killer so nothing but 4800mah or bigger on Li-Ion would work. I have 8611a's on one 8711 on my C-arf 2.3 and up until I added the 8711 I could easily get 10 lfights on 4800, but now it's more like 7 and that's pushing it. I've already seen 2 C-Arf planes go down because of the load they put on batteries and the pilot did not upgrade his power system to handle it. Check out the servo info on Troy Built's web site. You have a servo that is capable of pulling 20 amps all by itself but probably pulling 7 amps and that is just one, not toss in another 4 for a total of 5 and you have 35amps fully stalled and doing 3D you will see times that all servos will be stalled or at least a good part of them It's important to consider your type of flying when you get into larger planes and setting up for battery usage, servos and such but you probably already know that. The 5955's are fine in any case but to tell you the truth, I run 5945's which were replaced with the 5985's and they are lighter than the 5955 buy almost 1/2 ounce so you could save 2+ ounces right there and have all you need plus about 25% to 35% extra for torque with the 5985's and save a few bucks in the process. Check out troy built for the servo prices, somewhat cheaper than Tower and shipping is not bad at all. Servo City often has 4 packs for a decent price with free shipping I have several hundred flights on mine, I could probably bolt the wing on blindfolded as well as fueling it up and starting it I know it so well. My total layout is DA50 with 3 inch standoffs J'Tec Pitts muffler Either a PT models 22x8 or a Vess 22A depending on my mood Pete's CF spinner 3.5 inch I think 1 2400 Fromeco Li-ION for the ignition 1 Smartfly 5.2v regulator for the ignition 1 Smart fly optical kill for the engine into the gear channel 1 4800Mah Fromeco for the receiver 1 Fromeco badger switch for the reciever with 2 output leads for the receiver Hitec 5945's all around on the surfaces Hitec 6975 Hi speed servo for the throttle JWB 1.5 inch servo arms on ALL servos Titanium links on everything but the rudder Central Hobbies CF rod kit for the rudder Stock fuel tank in the stock position Stock control horns Sullivan tail wheel (stock one does not last long though mine did make it through most of last season) I only installed one servo tray in the plane, the throttle servo is installed on it and the battery/regulator is mounted to the center piece where the rudder servo would normally go Wheel pants are on Total empty weight is right on 13lbs 10 ounces This plane will out climb every other GP Cap232 it has come accross with the CF Prop. The Vess has better pull so it's a bit slower but the downlines do not gain speed and fully stalled flight has much better airflow than the CF prop |
RE: GP Cap 232
Hey Bubba ... well said.
This has probably already been answered, but with the 3" DA stand-offs, your prop washer will be 6.75" from the firewall, and the instructions call for 7.25". Did you add any spacers to get to the correct spacing? -R |
RE: GP Cap 232
1/3 less time with the 5955's. Regarldess of the battery you're running. Same weight for both servos though. 2400mah at 4.8/3000mah at 6.0 stall 5985 spec sheet http://www.hitecrcd.com/product_file...2/HS5985MG.pdf 3400mah at 4.8/4200mah at 6.0 stall 5955 http://www.hitecrcd.com/product_file...IFICATION..pdf |
