RE: GP Cap 232
OK, well I've had mine in the box waiting to come out for about 2 years. I got it from a friend very reasonably that had "too many planes". It's been waiting for me to make repairs on other planes and I have finally started to build it. I'm glad to see that there are mostly positive posts save the last bit. I'm going to put what I already have in it and upgrade components as needed or as I can afford. For now it's going to get a ST3000 and HS645MG's on whatever Spectrum 2.4 receiver I can russel up. It's not my "ideal" setup but it should get it up there. I'm not a 3-D guy and don't expect to turn into one overnight so there are no crazy expectations on my part.

RE: GP Cap 232
that setup should be fine for scale type flying. Enjoy.
I've been looking at mine in the garage and it's on my short list to put it back together with the new fuse. Hmmm.. maybe next year? Too many planes .. so little time. Dan |
RE: GP Cap 232
The wing joiner isn't ply but it is a hardwood. Kind of reminds me of something I'd stir paint with! It is so pretty!
|
RE: GP Cap 232
The plane not the joiner....is pretty.

Yes .. It's one pretty plane.
Be careful of the landing gear. It's attached to the engine box and will not withstand hard landings. I would beef up the area with some triangle stock |
RE: GP Cap 232
Where in particular for the triangle stock? At bottom of and around box? Your rig looks fine. So nice! I don't see damage. Is this a before shot, or an after you fixed it shot?

I have flown my cap for about 25 flights now. i love the way it "floats". takes a little to actually get it to stall. i am flying it with the dle-55 with a 22x10 xoar now (after breaking 4 22x8 props)and it flies great. As for the landing gear, on mine, it has taken some pretty rough landings and is still fine. i have had no issues with it at all. i just had the little wooden blocks that glue to the firewall to hold the cowl on vibrate loose so i just drilled a 15/64 hole throught them and the firewall and pegged them with 1/4" dowl. we will see how that works.

RE: GP Cap 232
Hi all,
quick question. I recently acquired this bird from my dad. He built and flew it about 6 times with a moki 2.1 and he just didn't care for the flying characteristics (he likes mellow flying planes). Now it's sitting in my garage waiting for me to crash one of my other birds so I can outfit it with the motor (moki 1.8) and equipment. My question is, does anybody have any tips on how to wire the aileron servo extensions? Per the manual, you have to install the servos and the extensions prior to joining the wing together. As far as I can tell, there is no tube in the wing for the wires to be guided toward the center of the wing. Thanks! |
RE: GP Cap 232
Stand the wing on end. Put a split shot fishing sinker weight on a piece of light string and put it in the hole on the top of the wing and shake the wing until you see the string go past the hole for the servo. Fish the string out with a pair of long nose pliers. Tie the string to the servo lead and pull it back through the wing. Repeat for other side of wing....

RE: GP Cap 232
I first bought this Cap in 2007 . Flew it a couple years with a DL 50. Sold the plane in 2009 to a fellow club member. I always liked the Cap, wish I never sold it. Well, I just got back a couple weeks ago.....its still a blast to fly with the DL 50!!!! This plane has been some serious abuse and it still looks new. The only thing I did during the build was pin the firewall and I made some 1/2" plywood blocks for under the landing gear to add alittle clearance for the 22/23x8 prop. Never had a problem with it, Unlimited vertical to say the least, and floats in like a baby. GP has a keeper with this plane. Hope it stays around awhile. When they come back into stock, I'm getting another for a spare.

RE: GP Cap 232
So I finally finished it. get the whole thing put together for balancing and setting the throws, etc. before the big day. the spinner backplate colapses as I tighten the screw and the backplate is contacting the cowl. Not to mention that the cone got into the prop and ruined that to boot. I guess I will have to go get a TruTurn and a new prop. Damn! It's a little bigger than I figured and boy is it ever pretty!

RE: GP Cap 232
I started to rebuild mine last night!!!!
I bought a new fuse last year and I'm getting to it now. I beefed up the landing gear and firewall with some aluminum stock. This is the weak point as the landing gear are attached to the outer firewall box. I do have a new dle55 not intending to use it for this plane , but I'm thinking about it. Last year I had a zdz40 in it and it went quite well. Seeing some guys with 50cc powerplants in this makes it look like a foamy. too hard to resist. |
RE: GP Cap 232
The CG came out at 3/16" fwd of the recomended CG. I had an old 3 1/2 " TruTurn Backing Plate that works but the prop is still nicked pretty hard. I never had a spinner do that before but the LHS acts like it's comon knowledge. Hmmm, I never had this problem before but I see that even the beefy old one distorts when I tighten it up so; not so tight, eh! I guess you never stop learning. I had to laugh, when I tried to put the old "Acu-Throw" on the stab it didn't even get close to being deep enough to clear the elevator! Forget the rudder, maybe on the ailerons.

RE: GP Cap 232
Yea, a Tru Turn is the way to go.............I've got a alot and I mean alot of flights on mine, never had any issues with the landing gear..........I their not due back in stock again till mid august...I'm getting another for back up....

RE: GP Cap 232
I've read this thread from the start and both of you guys [Sewerdude/Frankeldan] have a lot of time with this bird. Thanks for the pointers! -To you and all of the rest the whole way back. I really lucked out having that old backing plate. It has been really handy in some other build projects. I have had some great luck with the ST 3000 on another plane lately. If this one runs as good as the other this should be a lot of fun! They are just soooo thirsty! I just don't want to do the gas thing. This is as big as I really want to go and I don't want to get all invested in it for one plane.

I just got finished installing the DL-55 in mine tonight and recutting the cowl. I also braced the bottom of the engine box to take some stress off the landing gear.
Here are some pics. Good luck fthumma on the Super Tiger. Not sure how it will pull this thing around , but give it a try. I have one of those too and it drinks alot of fuel, as well as my Moki 2.10 and Saito 180 engines. Later, Dan |
RE: GP Cap 232
I would love to put this beast and my Big Bingo on scale and see how the weight's compare. I know this is lighter by a long way. It has to help on the fuel consumption, yes?, no?
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Nice pics. Have fun with your big foamy! Whoo-Hoo!

RE: GP Cap 232
I still have it. I was going to put it back into this plane but I couldn't resist using the dle55 that I just had sitting in the box. I figured also that I was coming in tail heavy with the ZDZ so more weight up front would be ok
I'll prolly use the ZDZ 40 for a H9 27% Edge that I have to finish.. It's still a great engine, light and powerful Dan |
RE: GP Cap 232
Frankeldan,
Well, I hope you have gotten yours in the air. I've been having a fight with time, weather, engine bearings, & hardware. I should have it back together this weekend. |
RE: GP Cap 232
Still working on it.
Have the dle-55 mounted and just got finished re-hinging the tail section. I'm working on some other planes right now , so this should be ready in a couple weeks. keep you posted. dan |
RE: GP Cap 232
Whooooo-Hoooooo! I got 6-7 flights in and I'm still tweaking the carb on the ST 3000. It pulls this around with no problem. The elevator was a handfull with 20% expo so now it has a much more managable 40%. I have 20% on the airlerons but I'm thinking 30% there just to soften it a little. Damn this lands slow! It slows down fast, too, then it floats forever. One hard landing but the mounts/gear looks fine. The above average tall grass tore up the pants. Very fixable. I have a new "Favorite Toy"!
