Barry.... Well 105 is sort of cool, but I guess it being that at 8am might seem different
elsewhere... I fly pretty much the same(that's some of the problem also), but the time
spent at, is kept at a min........ But even in this heat.... With your tuning help.. The 110
is purring with a loud growl....
Talking about performance... I remember doing slow lazy turns over the runway and
doing touch and go's down wind during the "cooler" times and a fellow member saying
that I'd better not try that in the summer.... But the "Do" keeps doing them.... The "Do"
floats in thick and thin.... You gotta love it:))

Yea...When you get the YSs tuned right (finally) they are the best running engines I've ever seen.

My guess, just like me, you are finding that the "supercharging" air intake really helps when things are difficult. (hot or high) The engine makes up some of the difference. At least that's what I've found.

Yea...I'd be melting too. Around here it has been hot for us. We get clost to 100 for maybe an hour or two but mostly our highs are about 90-95. It cools to about 50 at night. In two weeks the highs will be 75 and lows about 45.

But...in the winter.....

Update -- Well, the Central Hobbies CF control rods and Dubro HD Horns and clevises showed up this weekend and I just went out and purchased the Saito .82 engine and the Slimline Inverted Pitts muffler at the LHS. Blister, they price matched the Hobby Warehouse pricing and I was chomping-at-the-bit to get the engine so I let my impulses get the best of me. Also, I picked up an APC 13x8 Sport prop to start out with but if anyone has a better suggestion for a prop then I'm open to suggestions. Please just remember that I am at 5000 ft. elevation so hopefully, I chose wisely much like Indie. ;) Oh and I did order the velocity stack for the Saito and it'll be here on Friday, if it's in stock.

With a little bit of luck, I should be able to get the plane ready to to fly in about two weeks. It would be sooner but my work schedule won't allow me too much free time to work on it over these next few weeks. I'll try to get some pictures up as I get it closer to being completed.

BTW, and tips on breaking in a Saito? I'm planning on going over to the Saito thread and lookning around but I thought that I ask here first.

Hey Mark, Well most folks would use a 14x4W on the Saito 82. I would think that the 13x8 would try to pull the plane too fast. Sport props tend to be narrower than the wide blade props like the 14x4w. The thing is you want to get a good amount of air volume over the control surfaces at the lower speed that the Do's work best at.
For break in you could just make a stand out of 2x4's (L shaped) and mount the engine on a engine mount to the 2x4 frame, hold the fuel tank on with rubber bands, and make up something for some kind of throttle control and your done.
I didn't know they made a pitts style muffler for the Saitos. Interesting.....

I fly at 4800' elevation. So I feel your pain. I use a Saito 82. I use a APC 14x4W prop and I think it's perfect. Flys the plane very nice. I use 30% Cool Power fuel. The 30% is a necessity here in the mountains. It makes up for some of the elevation.

You'll love this combo.

Hmm... the LHS I just talked to said that the Cool Power is Heli Fuel... is this correct?

Also, Slimeline makes an Pitts Style muffler for inverted Saitos, p/n# 4017 ... runs about $75.00 at the store.

Started on my U-Can today, ever thing looks good except the covering is pretty bad. I thought I was bad at covering but after seeing this I have changed my mind. Oh well for 149 and 20 off of that how can I complain. I remember when an arf like this was unheard of.

I am having a hard enough time trying to put this ARF together! If it were a kit I would never get it done. I am able to get only about 15 minutes a day to do any work on it.

I had a choice yesterday to either fly or spend a few hours on the UCD and I chose flying. It was a good couple of hours at the electric field with the Super Sportster. It's no "Do" but at least it was off the ground and ended up in my garage in the same shape it left in. There is always next weekend to finish the UCD.

Well I got some flights on new DO yesterday. I started working on it Friday morning and had it ready to fly Saturday evening.
I'm happy to say all went well with the maiden day of flying. I put this one together with the Abell CF pushrods and titanium ends, Dubro HD control horns, high speed / high torque servos on all control surfaces and most importantly a Saito 100. After a month without one due to the crash, it was nice to get a UCD back in the air. Since my first one used 3004 servos and a Saito 65 for power it'll take a little flying time to get use to this one with all the extra power and better servos but it's a DO so all is good.

For fuel, I am now mixing 1:1, Omega 15% and Cool Power Heli 30%. I have almost exactly 20% nitro and 20% oil. The Saito LOVES it! The prop is an APC 14x4W and also works well. And, yes, elevation makes a difference. Higher ele. = less air, need more power/pitch.


Well guys, I finally got around to shrinking some hi-res pics down to post. These are from the jumbo fly-in hosted by the Tulsa Glue Dobbers R/C club. I may have trouble posting these so bear with me.

It was a scorcher, however as you can see, there was no shortage of pilots or planes! Enjoy the few pics I pulled for you. (And yes, there was one UCD 60 there!) Check out the unreal huge 70% (yes, 70%) Staudacher!! It has servos the size of 1 lb. loaves of bread and requires at least 700 CC engine! Now that's a jumbo! There's also a picture of Brandon Chitty, our local hero. He's the best pilot I've ever seen and is now a Team Hitec pilot! Also, nothe the lovely B-36, built and flown locally it is a favorite with all 6 of those 40's running together! Also some nice looking warbirds! Of course the areobatic boys were there too. Lot's of 300's, Cap 232's, and 540 Edges to be seen! Overall a real successful fly in. I'll spread these pics acrfoss a few posts here, like I said, bear with me! Hope you like the pics!

Well, posting these is giving me fits, I may have to break them up in several posts! We'll see, one way or another I'll get these posted!

Yes, the Cool Power 30% is Heli fuel. The difference is you get 22% oil content with Heli fuel. That's what you want in the Saitos. Also, an advantage is you don't have to add after run oil when you run the Heli fuel. Some may debate that but the fuel instructions say that and I never have. Don't be afraid of it. That's the fuel you want for the optimum power/performance level. Especially at your elevation.

I use the stock muffler on my Saito 82. Save your money and spend it on the 30% fuel.

I use the stock tank on mine with the Saito 82. I can get 13 minute flight times and have an ounce or two left over for safety. The stock tank is either 8oz, 9oz or 11oz. There has been some debate over that issue. I replaced mine with an 11oz (Hanger 9 said so and it was embossed right into the tank) Gjeffers ordered the 11oz tank on my recommendation and he said the stock tank held exactly the same amount of fuel. Since then I've used the stock tank. Seems to hold the exact same amount of fuel. Anyways, I'm glad Gjeffers took the initiative to do that.

The Saito get terrible flight times until you lean the low speen jet WAY down. After a reasonable break in I start leaning the low speed jet 1/4 turn at a time. It'll start to get better milage. 13 minute flight times will be possible for the 100 also. It doesn't use any more fuel because you don't use as much throttle. Even hovering you'll use the same as the 82 because I'll be open 1/2 way and you'll be open 1/4 way. Same fuel milage.

The covering is probably just wrinkled. That happens to mine after I crash. But when they're new I just spend 1/2 hour with the heat gun and the covering looks great.

:)One thing I will say about the covering on the UCDs. They are simply the best when it comes to seeing the different orentations in the sky. I absolutely love the checkerboard on the underneath side of the wings. Sooooooooo easy to see. I wish all manufactures would do that.

Curse you Red Baron, the DR.1 ready to dogfight, and what's that teddy bear doing in that UCD? The ever popular Ultimate bipe and one of my personal faves, the YAK!! Some really nice stuff at the Tulsa Jumbo Fly-in!

Hope you enjoyed the pics! I shot some nice video too, I might try to upload some to the gallery. They had two groups of 5 BIG aeros doing 3d manuevers together! Quite impressive seeing five 40% birds doing blenders, hovers and tail touches together! Not to mention the sound of 5 DA-100s running at one time! What a thrill, this is what it's all about! I love the smell of nitro in the morning!
