RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

WHEW!! Sounds like a close call! I'm glad you got it down safely. Kind of gets your heart racing, doesn't it. I start out with mine inverted and go all the up with the right stick and all the way right with the left stick and about 1/2 throttle and then add a little right aileron. It works good but is very touchy. I'll have to experiment with taking the ailerons off of dual rates.

On those close calls when the thumbs do dumb things, here we say "THE PUCKER FACTOR WAS A LITTLE HIGH" [sm=biggrin.gif]

Also, for those that have a Great Planes G2, heres links to the most "UCD Like" planes that you can DownLoad, and neither need AddOn's:

or "Super Extra Special" at >>> http://www.bestrc.com/hobbies-bin/rf...ad.pl?&page=10

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Yeah, That's why I love trying 3D it keeps my blood pumping:-)
And keeps pumping higher as you start doing it "Low and Slow"
Some club members ask, why do you like to do that un-plane like
flying... I reply, How do you feel when you make the wrong move
or something goes wrong and you get close to the ground.. They
usually say nervous and the blood pressure goes up... Exactly I
say.. And that's the feeling I get while doing 3D... And then I get
a complete head rush when I do it right and or pull it out from a
bad move:-)... I like all forms of flight... But right now 3D keeps
me pumping:-)) Well got to get back to putting these floats on
the Avistar and hoping for less wind in the A.M. And waiting for
DA_ UPS to pickup the Yak for inspection:-(

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Raideron - I agree completely agree with you on the "Blood Pumping"

Sometimes think "Whats so fun about going up and flying in circles".

It's fun to see what changes we can make to these planes, radio's, etc., to make them do crazy, fun stuff.

But then again, we have to remember and also respect, the guys that have been doing this for years. These guys are a wealth of information. They usually have the answer to questions like engine tuning and stuff like that.

But, I agree, 3D is just a BLAST !!! I guess thats why I'm puttin' together another UCD, so that I'll have another plane to put in the air, when I total my current one !!!!

Too each his own, I guess......

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Hey Barry.. I hope the wind is down so I can fly:-)

Hey I seen your post on the big ucd forum on storage... I think I
read somewhere it because the oil will plug in the diaphragm, guess
it'll clean out after running it for awhile, but they say it could be
hard starting and run a bit off until it clears itself out, or you may
have to clean it... But who knows.... So do you have a 110 in the
UCD 60?? Which flys better??

Barry Cazier 03-10-2005 01:27 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)I had a little trouble with my Mayhem with the YS110 in it. I started it a coupled of days ago, you know, just to get it ready to fly. Wouldn't run just right, so I cleaned the diaphram, and changed the glow plug. The straightened it right out. Now it runs good except still can't fly because of snow. But it's leaving fast. I don't have a 110 in the big UCD. I have a Saito 100 and it flys it very nice. I enjoy the UCDs so much. They are fun to fly and for me the Saito is such a good engine. I use a 16x4W prob on that baby and it does me just fine. I have a 110 on my Mayhem, Ultra Stick Lite and my Funtana. The US Lite and F90 I haven't flown yet since I mounted the YS. I hope to soon. I've got cabin fever bad.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Guys, anyone have any experience with a Saito 72? I put one on my new UDC and it starts easily enough, but I noticed that when I pull the igniter off, the RPM's drop.

I have about 2/3 of a gallon of 15% through it so far, and the mixture screw is out about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 turns.

whats the right way to set one of these up? I'm used to OS, this is my first 4-stroke.

Thanks

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

the set up is basically the same with the needles. try changing your glow plug first.......

perkinsm 03-11-2005 07:58 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Thanks Ritchie,, I'll give that a try.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Perkinsm, That's pretty much normal for a 4 stroke. The manual for the Saito 82 says to leave the glow ignitor on untill the engine's warmed up. Probably most people don't do that but it will drop a little bit when it's taken off. I usually leave it on for about a minute and then take it off and then advance the throttle just a little and head out to the taxi area and then set it down to a lower idle just before I take off. Works for me. If it starts right up your glow plug should be fine.

hello all, I will get some of the landing gear braces done tonight, Will post some pics. I remember some one wanting one, but can't remember.

How do you post pics in the fourm?

Thanks CeeGee, I'll give that a try. I'm sure I havent been leaving it on long enough.

I just got the Elevators and Rudder on my new UCD this morning. Used DuBro hinges and 30 min Epoxy rather than the CA Hinges.

perkinsm 03-11-2005 12:03 PM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Goldenclan - I would be interested in maybe getting some of those. Let me know.

I also have a OS .40 with about 10 flights on it for sale and a OS .46 AX, about 20 flights for sale if anyones interested.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

not a problem. Please e-mail me after I get them posted and we can work something out. here is my latest projects. For size referance, I am about 6'3" They are both kangke models. first one is a cap 232 120 1/4 scale and the second is a monocoupe 1/5 scale.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)I flew today. Weather got up to about 50 and the snow melted on the runway. I had to use 4 wheel drive to get into the field but that's ok. I flew the Ultra Stick 60. Had a great time. Tried not to get to wild because this was my first time. Wind was blowing pretty good too. But all in all had a great time. And it comes back pretty quick. Maybe tomorrow I'll break out something a little nicer.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Good for you Barry, I just checked our extended, no good flying weather till next weekend. It's been a long winter here, I'm even looking forward to cutting grass !!!

Barry Cazier 03-12-2005 12:38 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)perkinsm, I'm so excited to be flying. Believe me, our weather is less than perfect but still better than not flying. I was reading about your question of the Saito 72 losing RPM when you drop the ignitor. I think all 4 strokes do that. Especially when it is a little cold. You might leave the glow stick on a little bit longer but it'll probably still drop a little RPM when removed. I think it's a natural thing. I know all my Saitos do it. Also, I think you may be a little too rich on the bottom end needle. They come super rich from the factory. After the 30-40 minute break in it's time to lean them way down. First adjust the main and peak the RPM and back off one or two clicks. Then run the low end needle in at least a 1/ 2 to 3/4 turn. That's a good place to start. Then watch the transition from idle to mid and see if it stutters or dies or sputters. If it does any of these it's probably still to rich. Keep leaning it down until it makes a smooth, seamless transition. This will get even better after fully broken in. But don't scared to lean it down. That's where the famous Saito power comes from.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Didn't get to fly the UCD today. Too windy. I did swap the control rods on the tail for 4-40 though. Definately stouter. I'd like to purchase the carbon fiber type that someone had mentioned earlier in the forum. Does anyone have a picture of the carbon fiber set up that they could post? Thanks

Barry Cazier 03-12-2005 01:24 AM

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

:)CeeGee, I think raideron has carbon fiber control rods. He has a picture on post 1366 where you can see them pretty good. I use carbon fiber pushrods. I really like them. I get mine from Central Hobbies. I think a set is about $15. They are very stiff and light.
Thanks,
Barry

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Got to busy at work to finish the braces, will get them done this evening at work. 1/8 inch aluminum with another 1 inch square piece for a spacer on the cooling tunnel. Weather is going to be great for the rest of the week here, and all of next week. I think that I have had enough flights that it is time to switch try the high rates a little bit and do some 3d and some harder aerobatics.

Thanks Barry - That was a good description on how to tune my Saito. I'll give it a try next weekend, the forecast looks pretty good at this point. Do you recommend 30 %? I have been running 15%.

CeeGee - I changed mine to 4-40's after bending the rods that came with the plane. I also used DU-BRO E/Z Connectors Part Number 490, along with DU-BRO arms on the servo's. The CF rods are great too, if you decide to go that direction.

Hey all:-( CeeGee my UCD has 4-40 on it... They do pretty good... I have
C.F. on my 4*60.....

Anyway the 4-40 did not help me today:-( I was flying for a while and was
making a approch to land but instead did a touch and go, then I thought just
one more try on a flat spin.... So I go vertical, then transition into the one of
my greatest flat spins, a ways down I give more power to climb in a flat spin,
But the engine was a slight bit down on power on this hotter morning... So it
did just hand there for a while looking nice, I even got a comment from the
members about it... Then I heard the words.. You better think about doing
something Ron your pretty low... Anyway I tried to roll it out but it was a no
go.. So I thought I'd just fly out inverted this was about 10-15' (I got into the
flat spin hopnotized again) Anyway after trying to roll it, I lost a bit more
altitude now being about 8' and I just started losing sight of it(ground level
and into the wash) anyway before I lost sight of it, it looked like it started to
be in position to fly on out so I held the sticks and I was waiting for it to
reappear.. But then I heard the engine die... Then that nasty sound:-( If I
had more fuel.. I think I would have had another one of those amazing
saves.... But not so on this day:-((((.... Damage was not as bad as I thought..
wings and tail feathers in great shape, Did lost a horn on the left ail.. broke
the prop... But the fuse got a good hit just after the canopy... Very fixable
but not a great feeling:-(
My wheels did not touch the groung first today:-(((((

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Raideron - That don't look tooooo, bad. It could have been alot worse.

I have a piece of white Monocoat, that I removed from my wing when epoxing the bellytray on, that may be enough for your repair. Let me know if you can use it and I'll send it to you.

RE: U-Can-Do 3d 46?

Sorry to hear about that .....that makes for a crappy day eh? Good luck with repair!!!!!!!!!!
